Bowles = Rex Ryan ground and pound. On the flip side, Bowles couldn't hold Rex's jock in terms of being an overall HC. At least Rex had his defenses playing top 5 ball.
Great! Then in addition to having the only QB taken in the 2nd round who hasn't seen the field in 2 years, they can have a top 10 1st round pick who doesn't see the field in 2 years! They can set all kinds of records for futility and horrific drafting!
That's exactly the problem though. Bowles was pissed that Morton wanted to throw too much. As a HC you need to recognize the stregnths and weaknesses of your team. Our o-line cannot consistently create running lanes and we have no game breaking RB. Powell and Elijah are nice backs, they are not premium RB's though. So of course, Bowles thinks we can run the ball 40 times a game and win
I think it's because of the prototypical size/statute/build argument. Baker would be small, would need to build O around him. Thinking Allen would be more "pro-ready" and has the size/stature. To me that argument is bullshit, but I'm interested in understand why Allen would somehow be more preferred
Likewise. I understand they're not the same players, but Allen really bears a lot of similarities to Hackenberg, who Bates has been unable to salvage thus far. Any rookie, especially a QB and even a more "NFL-ready" one, is a project of sorts. I'm not saying Allen will definitely bust, but he has way more risk factors than the others IMO.
Bates is going to run a Shanahan/Gruden type WCO. Aside from his physical gifts, Josh Allen played in a WCO @ Wyoming.
Allen's footwork is garbage and so is his completion percentage. Found that he look best when they roll him out of the pocket. He does not look like a good pocket QB IMO. Would not be happy with picking him up.
Think Rosen fits better if they are going to play power run ball. Run to throw type scheme. That being said, Bates has a history of squeezing performance out of a QB. Maybe he gets Allen fixed, IDK. Doubt Allen plays week 1 though.
Funny you mention that. Apparently the assistant coach who has been linked to Bates in his two NFL spots thus far is in Limbo, UCLA OC/QB coach Jedd Fisch. Now, this does not mean we are going to land Rosen but I find this very interesting that Bates and Fisch have a close relationship. In limbo now due to UCLA hc change, Fisch may end up being hired as QB coach. If hired, he can have a lot of intel on Rosen
Well if Bowles really wants to run more - and I could see that from the standpoint of trying to eat up the clock and keep his porous defense off the field - they'd better do what they can to get Barkley. I'm not saying they SHOULD go with G&P, but if they do they'd better have a RB who can carry the team on his back.
Interesting, did not know that connection. I also wonder if the Jets quickly moved Bates to OC to attract Cousins.
you guys realize we are going to have a really boring offense next year. I would have preferred haley over bates calling the plays
Barkley would be great but unless we address o-line, no RB is going to be the best he can be. The game is won and lost in the trenches. Clean pockets, pass lanes, run lanes = offense scoring points.
