Yeah. Maybe two and I'm calling it a year. Sunday for Blackfish, then the next week if the Cod/Pollack/Ling fishing kicks in. All of those are winter fish. I'll have to record Petty's last stand since I'll be on the water.
It's been brutal this week, ocean has already dropped 8 degrees in 5 days...... yest the high was 45 with 39ktwinds and rain.... and the "cold" wont be until tomorrow & thurs. Chance of snow flurries in jax we get cold.... but it's usually short lived. It's been warm, and last winter was really warm (that's when the more sensitive fish like snook and tarpon stay up here), so when it drops that quick they dont have time to migrate south

Looks like Mother Nature has shut down the winter fishing season here. Accuweather's outlook for the rest of this month is showing precipitation every weekend in some form. Maybe late Feb or mid-March I'll start for Cod. Other than that, I'll just depend on my Florida Fishermen to hold the fort. Still a pretty damn good year fishing in 2017. No complaints.. Tight Lines!
Sorry, I was away from the board a few days and didn't see this until now. Shallow night fishing around 200 - 400 feet. Days can be anywhere from 400 - 1200 ft. Giant Tile fish , Grouper and 20 plus pound Mutton snapper are common.
It's really sad. The Snook had finally rebounded from 2010s cold winter. How cold have the ocean temps dropped up there? I'm sure the rivers are even colder. We had some cold nights but current ocean temps are still in the mid to upper 70s. Snook , and tarpon fishing has been great along the beaches and shrimp are starting to show up pretty regularly. I hope we don't have another major snook kill.
Yep.... that was bad, and lots of dead snook around Palm Coast that winter. We don't really get them in the surf, mostly just inshore creeks, especially brackish ones (same with juvenille tarpon) and those will chill the fastest. Usually snook fishing here is determined by the previous winter's weather, so there have been some around this year, but unfortunately I havent really been fishing much as house repairs have taken most of my time. Palm Coast is usually the northern line to get snook in any quantity, but last winter was so mild that some have made it up to JAX. St. Aug surf temp dropped to 50. Heard parts of the "river" hit 47. Worst part about it was the rate it dropped. Ocean dropped 10 degrees in a week, so moreso for the ICW, so I'm sure the impact will be bad. Last week I dont think the daytime temps got out of the 40s Good friend is a good charter guide and had to shutdown work all last week.... said it's slow now too. Dead bait in deep holes for Reds and black drum
Lots of dead snook across the entire state that year. From the north through the keys on both coasts. You ever fish the bridges for stripers in Jacksonville? Haven't been up there in a very long time but fished there alot when I was. Anything below 55 is fatal for Snook and Tarpon so it's going to have an impact. Don't get any Reds here, no grass flats but there are some good spots for black drum. Weather has been rough for off shore so it's been mostly beach fishing the past few weeks.
Nah, but I've heard of guys getting them under the downtown bridges on on the coldest shittiest days of the year..... Usually if I head up to JAX to fish it's offshore bottom fishing with a good friend. I've never caught a snook north of Palm Coast (under the bridge). Reds are plentiful here, (no grass flats, but lots of oyster mounds) and flounder in the spring and fall. Buddies dad just picked up a new Cape Horn 32..... so hopefully I get some invites for wahoo in the coming months
I don't know why I thought you were in Jax. I was in Mayport for a couple of years in the Mid 80s. Fishing was good back then. I prefer bottom fishing and jigging myself. I hate running offshore and trolling all day. Great way to find fish, but I prefer to feel the strike and fight a fish. Wahoo are my weakness. Favorite fish by far.
ocean temp down to 48! (only have seen it this low TWICE in 25 years) Beach air temps dropped to 27 and have been below freezing for 10 hours (currently still 30 @ 9:30) No bueno
Giant surf + 30mph winds = no fishing. Sucks because I’m on partial layoff and was looking forward to some weekday action. Got down to the mid 60’s here recently, had to actually use the heater in my car on the way to work lol.
