Thanks for this article and discussion! Great read. While in the Doctor's office this afternoon, I read the Dec. 4 issue (I think) of Sports Illustrated. There was a big article about him. The top two seasons on record in the history of college football for QB rating belong to Mayfield for the 2017 and 2016 seasons. In 2017 he did not have a game where he threw for less than 257 yards and 2 TDs. He's so supported and well liked by his teammates, that when he got down after making the mistake of getting arrested for public intoxication in Arkansas, they had his back and supported him. They did the same thing after the Kansas game where he grabbed his crotch. He is friends with almost every member of the football team. When his HC Lincoln Riley took his captaincy away for the last game of the regular season and had him not start as punishment, his teammates who were captains for the game carried his jersey with them out for the opening coin toss. His HC sees him as having the same improvisational type of skills as Favre, but is more careful with the ball, and not as reckless. He also said that Mayfield can make every throw on the field. So I retract my statement where I was concerned with his lack of relative arm strength. I allowed myself to be too influenced by some posters here. I now like Mayfield better than any of the other QBs, and hope that he is the QB the Jets draft. I like his competitive spirit better than Rosen's, and he doesn't have the injury history of Rosen (I don't like his build at all), is more mobile, and doesn't force the ball like Rosen. I think Darnold has a TON of work to do before he's ready to play in the NFL. I love Allen's potential, but his stats and play this past season scare me. I think Mayfield could come in and start, if not day one, then by early in the season, and I think he would be the perfect QB for the Jets.
I don't want Jackson at all. He could develop into a better Michael Vick, but he could also wind up having to play WR or maybe even DB. If it came down to the Jets taking Jackson, or taking no QB in the first 3 rounds in the 2018 draft, I'd go with no QB, and would have them take a stud pass rusher (Chubb or Key), Barkley, or the best LT prospect in the 1st round.
Difference with them they backed it up and had talent. I don't remember Adams having any meaningful games. Help me out name one any one.
How is that an option? The last time the Jets lucked into a QB it was Chad Pennington. If you think Macc with be that guy when the scraps are left, good luck with that. He can't get it right taking at the top ten every year. Plus QB is on that otherside of the the football that Macc is allergic too.
They are some who don't like Chubb also. That is how its always been. Posters fall in love with whatever talent they think will be that gamechanger for the Jets. But their attitudes might change with offseason signings. If they get a vet QB then a Chubb pick would soften some. But if they have no QB and there is at least one of them available. I don't think many will be thrilled. Except the defense always and forever guys. It would be amazing if the Jets had an awesome defense and they were adding to it. But their defense is garbage and one band aid won't help.
IMO the sky is the limit for this kid...he's the guy I want for us @ 6. McCown as starter for one more year to help Baker mature and learn how to play QB in the NFL, then you hire McCown as a coach to continue the process. This team needs a "face of the franchise" kind of player... a kid that charges up the fan base and puts asses in the seats... Mayfield is that guy. His teammates love him, he's a leader and all his coaches speak highly of the kid... i'm praying that the new #6 for the NYJ will be our guy.
Not a chance - Gholston had ?'s written all over him. Chubb is a fucking beast. Unless you are getting a FQB passing on him could be worse than when we passed on Warren Sapp.
Fist fights in the galleries at the draft as the koolaid guys and the darksiders brawled over the pick.
I don't think that Mayfield would have to sit for the whole year, and maybe not at all. Once he learned the offense and adjusted to the speed of the NFL, I think he could quite possibly beat out McCown. Otherwise, I agree with all that you say.
It’s his maturity I think McCown could help with more than anything else . I’m not saying we couldn’t let this thing play out in training camp and if Mayfield shows he is ready then we’re golden ... I just don’t want to rush the kid into a situation where he’s seen as the savior and ruin him by throwing him to the wolves too early . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah, undoubtedly you're right. Even though I've been posting on Jets fan sites for around 18-19 years, I continue to be shocked and amazed at just how differently Jets fans see things from team needs, to evaluations of individual players and prospects, to how the organization is run, etc. I disagree that the defense is garbage. They played that way at times this past season, but I put all of that on Kasey Rodgers and Todd Bowles, not the talent level. The Jets have a lot of talent on that side of the ball. Adding Chubb and playing him at OLB or switching to a 4-3 and having him at DE, would totally change our pass rush and the ability of opposing QBs to pick us apart. IMO he's the type that could single-handedly change the momentum and outcome of a game, and would most certainly get the Jets' D off the field in a lot of situations.
Yeah, I agree with that. I think Mayfield is pretty mature, but he has admitted that he still has growing up to do. There's certainly no sense in throwing him to the wolves if he isn't ready. They need to groom and develop him in the right way. I can easily see him developing into another Drew Brees in the right offense and with the right handling.
No matter how much a "beast" he is, there is no player, on "D" or "O" who makes a bigger impact than a QB. The Jets MUST get a quality QB in FA or the draft, no ifs and or buts. But for the sake of conjecture, let's say they decide that whichever QBs are left at #6 aren't worth it, are there any QBs that would be coming out in 2019 that are better? It MIGHT be acceptable to pass on a QB with the first few picks if they believe their guy will be available to them next year. But of course that has all sorts of risk: You future FQB (FFBQ) might get hurt; he might decide to stay in school; very high likelihood that the Jets don't have a high enough pick to ensure they get their guy. In then end, if there is a QB available who might be their FQB, they need to take him. Look what happened in the last draft - they passed on Mahomes and Watson, two guys who are arguably better than anyone available this year. "A bird in hand is worth two in the bush" as they say. And finally, there is no way to construct a "shut down" defense in this era of the NFL. If you can't score on the other team when the chips are down, you won't be successful.
Based on your bolded phrases there, I don't see how you could possibly advocate taking Barkley over a QB as you did in a previous post, especially since I know how much you thought the Jets should have already drafted a QB. I agree that the Jets can't wait until next year for the reasons you cite. I think signing a FA QB like Cousins, Keenum, Bradford, Smith would be a HUGE mistake. The only FA QB aside from McCown, who would hopefully be back only as the backup and mentor, would be Teddy Bridgewater, and I'd much rather have Baker Mayfield and maybe even Allen than Bridgewater. I don't really like Rosen or Darnold at all at this point. I think Mayfield is a better player, has a better attitude, is a better leader than Rosen, is more accurate, is more mobile, and doesn't have Rosen's thin build or injury history. My mind could change as things unfold during the offseason, but at this point, whereas I think Darnold has a lot of talent and potential, I think he needs a ton of work and may need to sit for 2 years. Right now, I'm ALL IN on Baker Mayfield.
Well I admit I'm being a little inconsistent, but it's due to Barkley's game-breaking ability. He falls just short of being able to impact a game like a true FQB can, and for that reason MAY be a safer bet than any of the QBs short of Rosen, and with Rosen as you noted, his durability (and some say attitude but that's very subjective) is a risk too. And when I advocate taking Barkley it's based on them either having signed a FA QB, or targeting a QB with their 2nd pick, even trading back into the 1st round to get one. Taking one of the "lesser" QBs at that point, with Barkley in the backfield significantly improves the chances of that QB being able to succeed. I too like Mayfield, and find myself wondering if he would be better than Rosen for the reasons mentioned. My chief concern with Rosen is can he stand up to the pounding in the NFL? We can't know until he's subjected to it, and by then it's too late. Still, in the games I've seen him play he has a great arm and awareness, and really challenges defenses. He has the arm to fit tight windows or to air it out. At this point I would still take him over Mayfield, but it's very close. I do like Mayfield's moxie and he's shown to be durable. That said, he hasn't taken snaps under Center or played in a pro style offense, and he's from the Big 12 which tends to inflate QB performances. That said, what he's shown against out-of Conference teams like Ohio State and Georgia was very impressive. I have to assume the Jets will work all the QBs out in the system they plan to use to get a better idea of whether they fit. So far Macc has totally misfired on the 2 QBs he's picked, so my confidence in him getting this right is slim, but that's the only chance we have.
