I hope I'm wrong but I think Key will do really well at the underwear olympics and rise on the draft boards and its a classic NYJ draft pick.
Agreed, I think to secure him gotta get back into that 20 to 25 range. Its a bigger gamble should you wait until the 2nd.
I have already disputed a lot of this in the Lamar Jackson thread. I specifically remember talking to you about this. He needs to fix his lower body mechanics, upper body mechanics are fine and IQ is good. His rate of improvement shows me, he will be better come combine. He is not a glorified WR / RB. You can continue to think that way, but until you put as much work as me in terms of scouting him, go through the film and find tape cuts to support your argument, I won't give you the satisfaction.
McCown is very athletic and I think Lamar could learn a lot from McCown in terms of playing the position. The mistakes McCown made in the past like the McCowncopter ... He fits the Morton offense, its not hard to tailor an offense for Lamar, but for the Jets I could see them overthinking it. Mac won't take Lamar though, he's not Mac's type. I hope Lamar does well too. He's a good guy personality wise, a quiet leader, and a very hard worker. I think he puts as much work in as a lot of the QBs in this class.
Not to dispute your due diligence but all the tapes I've seen of Lamar , the team has him running the ball more than he is passing. And if his mechanics are not where they should be, I would not entrust the Jets or most teams for that matter to make the necessary corrections in a certain time frame. Seriously, you may be right that Jackson has the talent and all, but, for the Jets to invest in the time , which they have already in Hack, 95% chance Mac's passes.
But one thing I learned is that I have to look past the system. Maybe take the system for what is was. Grab whatever I can from it. Him running that many times a game won't happen in the NFL. I mean Lamar is more athletically gifted then most defenders in college and possibly in the NFL. So why wouldn't I give him the ball in college? He was a threat each time he had the ball in his hands. Louisville's offensive line has failed Lamar Jackson all season long, you can watch the NC State game and see Lamar has like 2 seconds at best in the pocket. Every time, Lamar dropped back to pass, Chubb was sitting there ready to put his balls on Lamar's chin. Freshman center has allowed so many pressures up the middle. You put Lamar Jackson on that Clemson offense and no one would be having this discussion. The thing is about Lamar is the coaches don't have to invest all of that time like Hack, because Lamar has invested time in himself, on his own. The guy came back this year completely refined in terms of playing in the pocket. I think that bowl game will be a blessing in disguise for Lamar. BTW, It's no disrespect to you at all, but I watched a lot of his games a lot of his cuts (good and bad) ... I need to see more then just "he can't play QB"
I wonder if there will be a way to get a new QB, pass-rusher and C all in 1 off-season. Won't be easy. I think those 3 positions really need to be addressed.
Yeah, scoring on a QB and Pass rusher could turn them around. It's possible. Fingers crossed. What about Jonathan Harrison? They may like him. Watching him rumbling down field making blocks was impressive. But can he make the calls at the line of scrimmage and pass block?
Nobody is talking about James from Florida State from what I hear he can play CB, Safety even OLB. Is he worth the 6 pick?
There will be a QB available at 6 but assuming Rosen, Darnold are gone, whoever is available, Jackson, Mayfield, Allen. Rudolph, etc Jets have to decide if they are worthy of a 6 pick. Mayfield is not worthy imo. 2nd round, yes. I really liked Allen after Rosen, that’s just my opinion. Pick up a QB in FA, and still draft a QB for future.
If he can keep Hue Jackson on another year after going 0-16. I'm pretty sure he has some impact. But the draft should be the GM role. Seeing that the Jets, just to compare have neither a chief strategist, president or GM. We could sure use someone in that role. It seems the owners micromanage everything with the Jets.
You seen to have a more in depth technical view about how QB's are gauged in their mechanics than me. I'm just going by gut instincts on what I've seen that will determine what Mac will do when draft time happens, but I've been wrong before.
The dreaded best player available again. How has that help the Jets in the last 3 years in any way shape or form?
Hey Macc are you reading this. Game over just take Jackson @6. 101 will you be taking the card to the commish?
So, as I read everyone's desired scenarios and corresponding debates about how to best address the QB position, the one thing that isn't getting enough consideration on this board is the distinct possibility that Darnold stays at USC for another year. This possibility has definitely been a consistent theme among some reporters for months now. Obviously, Darnold's decision will have a major impact on who we can realistically get without trading up.
