Our ambition for this season was to see the team compete and fight every week. We went in understanding that this would be a transition year after a huge roster purge so expecting a playoff run was unrealistic. If folks set their expectations any higher then they only have themselves to blame for feeling let down. I get that everyone is impatient for this team to finally start winning, but a year like this was necessary. Same record as last year but anyone paying attention can see that the team is moving in the right direction. The games were a lot more competitive than they were last year which was honestly unwatchable most of the time. Next year the stakes are higher. With the salary cap and draft capital that they have to work with they need to at least be knocking on the door of a playoff spot in 2018. If not then you all are more than welcome to fly banners over Florham Park next fall.
You know better than to quote Cimini. He has less credibility than Mheta. But we're paying enough players to play for other teams, may as well pay a coach to coach elsewhere?
Of course players make a difference, but if coaches didn't you wouldn't see repeat champions even after player turnover. And it's especially true in the NFL where coaches have become more micro-managing over the years. I remember when om Landry calling most of the plays for Roger Staubach was a novelty, now the QBs have freaking headsets so the coaches can use him like an extension of themselves. The next logical step for the NFL is to go to CG-based players and controlling the action via computers! Even if you have a FQB, if you have a poor to mediore HC, you won't win a championship. Bowles's mistakes cost them several games this season, not the players, but Bowles. The talent was sufficient to make the playoffs, but they didn't, and that's on Bowles and his CS.
Not a fan of the Todd Bowles experiment. His scheme doesn't fit our players on Defense. Maybe his scheme is good but our players can't produce results with it. Either way the problem falls on TB and his staff. On offense, he seems oblivious. He doesn't adjust well during games, and time management is also a problem. His faith in our D-coordinator is ridiculous. Again it could be a scheme/personnel issue for Rodgers too, but when I see our DB's 10 yards off the line in a short down distance situation I can't help but have zero faith. His blitzing schemes only work when he sends DB's, and then we are susceptible to the quick passing game. Even with the drafting of 2 big name safeties, and I realize they are rookies, we get burnt by TE's and RB's all over the field. If TB was a decent coach you would figure our secondary would have progressed over the season. It appeared to regress. Even when the stats say I'm wrong, in big moments we always come out on the negative side of things. McCown, who didn't participate in the preseason, ended up being the only bright spot on offense. He was constantly under pressure but still had a great season by his standards. Not to mention we had zero running game. Since his injury, Robbie Anderson's improvement and shot at a 1,000 yard season are gone. We will see if Bates has done anything at all by next season. I'm almost certain we won't draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round this year. Since Mac has been extended, the Hack adventure will continue. TB will continue to grow on the job, as will Mac. Mac has not drafted particularly well, nor has he done much in free agency signings. Revis, Wilkerson, Fitz, Winters, were shit contract debacles. Trading a first round talent Sheldon Richardson for a #2-3 receiver Kearse is a debacle. It was still more of the Purge that continues. Mac and Todd want every one of Rex's players out. I mean for heavens sake, Todd had Richardson playing LB at times. Why keep Wilk but throw away Sheldon? Both are locker room problems to many on this board, but were flourishing under Rex. Seems to me it's the coach, not the players. The only good draft pick, as far as production goes is Williams. He fell in our lap, or Mac wouldn't have anything on his short draft resume. This FA period and draft should determine Mac's fate. If our team doesn't get better across the board, he should be fired at years end 2018. If Bowles doesn't show significant improvement in the team and player development and win department by years end 2018, he should also be fired.
To say coaching isn't significant is ridiculous. Good coaches win with all types of players good and bad. Bad coaches can't win with team's that are full of talent. Granted, sometimes great coaches who don't have talent at all suck. Sometimes shit coaches have tons of talent and win despite lack of coaching, however very very seldom. Walsh built the dynasty in SF, while Switzer inherited a dynasty in Dallas as examples of each. Belicheat wins with Matt Cassel, Mangini didn't make the playoffs with Farve. One is in the HOF when he retires, the other coached his way out of football very quickly. Coaches are the most important piece when two teams match up against each other to extremes. The Giants have won 4 Superbowls and have had 2 great coaches. The Jets haven't played in a Super Bowl during that time, but got close due to a man named Parcells, and the offspring of Buddy Ryan. You have to have a great coach, without one you will never be a good team.
Can't like this enough. The whole problem with the Jets wrapped up in one post. But you'll have the deniers chiming in that you got it all wrong. I especially agreed about the players not liking Bowles so he jettison them. If your ego is that shallow then you shouldn't be in the coaching game and dealing with different personality. Having a squad of "I luv u man" type guys won't get you anywhere.
With what QB and what coach? Sure won't be Bowles. He had a squad of vet's playing great and they fell short. Think we should shoot lower. Little things like 2 wins in a row, an adjustment at halftime, an adjustment in the 4th quarter. Little things like that ,playoffs would make Bowles head explode.
Absolutely right about the short term goals you list. My point is, it’s not unusual for a bad team to make the playoffs the following year. I’m absolutely confident the Jets starter is someone not on the roster and they will perform.
LOL Double B. The guy who get's the draft wrong every year. Its comical how people that have made no comments about the Jets all year think this is a great idea and Todd Bowles is the greatest coach since Paul Brown, Lombardi and Walsh. Even Teddy Bruschi likes. But we know why cause he's a Patriot homer and wants 2 easy wins every year from the Jets.
If I’m Bowles my top agenda is cutting penalties by 30%. I’m not sure how you actually do that in coachland but a 30% reduction would put the Jets at the top of the league as the least penalized team.
I know the haters are gonna hate, but I can't help calling it like I see it. I believe good coaches can take a roster and figure out a way to win with what is there, rather than purging and shuffling players in and out to fit his ideas. I swear I would rather have Rex. Herm even, and that's bad. I think this long process of cleaning house is just to stay on payroll as long as possible. Once Mac and Todd are fired they will never fill those positions again due to ineptitude. I'm a Jet fan till I die, so I guess we will find out how good they really are. I hope I'm clueless and they build a dynasty, but I bet I'm right. It sure doesn't look like Debartolo and Walsh at work, or Jimmy and Jerry. Lol Looks more like goober and gomer.
The best thing Bowles did had nothing to do with getting the most out of the offense, and everything to do with getting Morton instead of that dynasour Gailey. The next best thing he can do is get rid of Casey. Our defense significantly under performed, not just this year but since he has been here. Bowles is not that smart of a coach so he better get some really smart coaches under him to help him grow.
I'm a Jets fan also but some of the starch has been taken out of me and I'm not into it like I used to be. I would feel great if I thought Bowels had a clue about coaching. In those video's about the contract being extended. Not one player said Bowles was an innovator coach who's schemes put them in the best position to make a play and succeed. No it was the same scripted comment. The stability will go on and I like Todd Bowles. Doesn't get me excited and the team is boring and plain. Sure winning would change that but the Jets really don't have any top flight talent anywhere on the roster. There is no one that a team has to game plan for. So this take me to all that cheddar they have to spend this offseason. Are they gonna overpay players that maybe don't want to come here because of his handling of Wilkerson and Richardson? Yes, players and their agents talk and I'm sure there is more to Wilkerson actions. Are players gonna stay away because they actually know Bowels is really on a 1 year prove it contract? Maybe the next regime won't like this set up and they might be cut with the new team coming in. They need a lot of talent because the little engine that could guys are about the end of their shelf life.
I agree, we will definitely over pay for players. Other than McCown, who hasn't Mac over valued and over payed? I really hope he signs a bunch of "up and comers" aimed at every hole on our roster. If we gain an above average line, add an above average every down RB with Powell and McGuire as back ups, add a true #1 WR, our offense can work with McCown at QB and be a playoff contender, until we find a QB for the future. I realize the McCown window will close quickly due to his age, and possibly flop like Fitz, but I don't want to over pay for a QB that isn't established in current over priced QB market. Cousins may cost more than we can afford considering all the holes we have. On the defensive side of the ball, Bowles better have the balls to influence Mac into buying the pieces to make this defense reliable again. Rex took a bunch on older slower players, applied a good scheme that the players bought into, and was the strong point of the team. Where you at Bowles? Rex did it quickly, how many players and seasons do you need before our defense is top 10 again. This team had defensive talent when he got here and it sucked. Now he has his type of personnel, and multiple years to install his scheme. Results please.... Rather than further regression? I hope you are right, I hope this is a one year prove it type extension.
Hopefully we never have to find out, but unfortunately I suspect one of us will be proven wrong next year. Only time will tell!
Chris Johnson and his faithful companion arrive to make important announcement for the New York Jets:
This is factually incorrect as well as ridiculous. The NFL stats page shows him rated # 18 in Quarterback rating which puts him smack in the middle of mediocrity and below average. His QB rating is 23. You tell me what "measure" you have that puts him "above average." Then you can tell us what building you have seen that you believe this crew can continue with.
