Like Cimini said today, that extension isn't fire-proof. I would be willing to bet 7 wins or less gets Bowles fired at the end of the 2018 season.
Yeah, Bowles takes full credit for McCown playing over his head (which is the only reason this team won 5 games).... smh
Hard to say..he was around for such a short time. But he sure as heck was a better game/clock manager.
It just seems that the height of the Jets ambition is to have a team that doesn't quit on its coach...............apart from our highest paid player..............and ignoring most of the squad are FA's next year...........................including our QB as we can't get anything out of a rookie.
If you haven't heard me complain about Macc you're just not paying attention. I never said Adams and Maye didn't do well. But crediting the improved secondary to Bowles (Rodgers) is a stretch. And there were significant breakdowns still...don't you even hold the coaches responsible for those? BTW: I thought Maye was a good pick -even though I wanted an "O" picked. I would've been much happier skipping the "Cant miss" Adams and taking Mahomes or Watson and taking Maye than what they did. In any case, the secondary was horrible in 2016 so it really almost HAD to be better this year, and no surprise it was. If it wasn't would you have then called for Bowles to be fired? Somehow I doubt it. Sure Robby Anderson improved, as did the other receivers, but I don't think Bowles had much to do with that. But if you want to credit him for this, then you need to also hold him responsible for the failures under him. And I've acknowledged the team has done better, particularly in playing together, and I'll admit Bowles has had a hand in that, but HIS mistakes, mistakes that he's made since Day 1, have cost the team wins. Why hasn't he learned from his own mistakes? Humans have blind spots. Successful people learn to overcome their own blindspots, but Bowles doesn't seem to. You're willing to give him more time. The Johnsons agree, but it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
How sad that year after year Jets fans hope that some day ownership will get it right and hire someone who can spot talent and draft and build a team and it never happens. Now our clueless ownership has extended two loser and this franchise will continue to be a joke into the next decade. In the next 72 hours a guy like Bill O'Brien is going to be available and we instead extended Toilet Bowels through 2020. I have been a die hard Jets fan since 1966 but enough is enough.
Yay, I love when people think their thoughts need their own thread and ignore the thread on the same topic
The Bowles supporters on this site shock me. I don't get how there could be any. I am fine with someone saying the roster is bad and he should be given another year with better talent. I disagree, but if you believe that I am fine with it. Don't tell me he has coached well or is a good coach or that he develops players well though. That is straight up insane and delusional.
The team is on an upswing. You can’t put all the credit or blame on either the gm or coach. This was absolutely the right move for where the team is.
Yeah, like I said, that view is fine. You are not saying he has done great. He clearly has not. For this situation, you think he deserves another year and I get that. It's a tough situation. Bowles is highly respected across the league. I just have not seen why as a Jet yet.
Well said. I said this earlier today but Dalvin Cook was on the board when Maye was selected. Hope that doesn’t haunt me forever.
Huge turnover year-to-year with last place teams to playoffs teams (and visa versa *looking at you Oakland*). No reason the Jets can’t put together a playoff squad.
Disagree. The obsession with coaches is way overdone. You win with players. The Jets need more talent. Bowles is fine and the players that they do have play hard for him. Ask any coach and they will tell you that the only difference is the quality of the players. That why recruiting and draft choices are so important.
i disagree with this. great coaches win year after year with constantly changing talent. they may have a down year here or there but they are typically in the hunt.
Hey, that is a good point, @hornblower. I have discussed that many times. Take just QB for instance. Bowles won 10 games with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. That same season Mike Tomlin won 10 games with Ben Roethlisberger as his primary QB. Belichick has Brady. Bowles has McCown. Talent is a huge part of wins and losses. Bowles just makes too many questionable decisions for me to support.
