As far as i know there are only first and second round tenders. So this fourth and 5th you are talking about is just untrue. Washington can’t afford risking that for 34m. It’s not fathomable.
the tender doens't matter. Washington will own his rights with the tag and can trade him for a ham sandwich if they wanted to. it's not a risk, you don't let an asset like that walk. If someway somehow nobody bites on the trade they cans till keep him anyway and have 30mil in cap room left for a free agent or 2 and to sign their pics. It's actually stupid they didn't sign him already
Dude that team is in shambles. They can’t pay him 34million and fill the rest of the roster. I’ve also heard that gruden doesn’t like him and would rather build around colt McCoy than him. I believe Anita marks said this the other Day. The last time Snyder got involved in qb decisions they traded 3 1s for Rg3. Hrs gone.
I don't think you realize what a rare commodity a franchise QB is. The last time one was allowed to walk in the NFL was 2006 with drew brees and only because he blew out his shoulder so was seen as a risk and they already had rivers they drafted 1st overall. I can't remember the last time a franchise QB was allowed to walk that wasn't coming off a major injury in NFL. it just doens't happen. Shambles or not you don't let your best player walk away for free especially when it's a top tier QB
The winner in this has been Cousins, when he gets franchised he will be making 30 million this year? He's at possibly $54 million dollars already and still can potentially make another $50 million in guaranteed contract money with a new team after he moves on from Redskins. Unless he decides not to sign a long term deal with a new team if he's traded and start the franchise cycle again with his new team.
You and Solid are both right, that's the conundrum of the Cousins and Redskins situation. Redskins are trying to take care of him while building the rest of the team, and Cousins is squeezing them for everything he can on a yearly basis. He's acting like Revis.
Of course I understand what a rare commodity a FQB is. I'm 27 years old and the last one we could even consider a FQB was Chad. The Skins have absolutely botched this situation with Kirk and there is no mending it IMO. He is going to hit the market and the Jets would be absolutely foolish if they don't throw everything AND the kitchen sink at him. If they wanted Kirk as their guy they would have locked him up 2 years ago when he emerged. They bet on him not being the guy the first time. They bet on him not being the guy the second time. And here we are for the third time. This time they royally screwed up and cannot afford his 34m tag.
Completely disagree about him acting like Revis. Revis had contracts in place and didn't honor them. This is Washington not offering up what he is worth and him betting on himself and the Redskins losing.
But they did offer him a $75 million dollar contract with $54 million guaranteed, he and his agent said they didn't mind doing the yearly contract option. How much do you think he should get?
or course he wins, eh's played at a top 10 level for the past 3 years in a row. man deserves to be paid. I'd give him 95 million guaranteed 55mil bonus and 28mil a year on a 5 year deal without blinking an eye. we have enough cap room to front load it as well so it doens't cripple us in the future. look at it this way. 55mil bonus means 11mil cap charge per year (5 year deal) total contract of 140 million means 85 million in salary and roster bonus left pay him 40 mil salary in 2018 and a 5 mil roster bonus that makes his cap charge in 2018 56 million against our cap. insane i know but we have 100 mil to spend and after we dump wilk like 115 mil. figure about 8 for rookies max puts us at 107. so even with cousins eating up 46 mil in 2018 we'd have 51mil left to resign some of our players and pick up free agents. that means for the remaining 4 years he'll only count about 20 mil on average for the rest of the 4 years but we can back load the final year and restructure later meaning that 2019, 2020, and 2021 we can keep him under 20mil a year cap, maybe even under 15mil a year cap which would be very cheap for a FQB
this^ Revis got his deal as the highest paid CB and still wanted more every year. Cousins only had his rookie contract and then franchise tags. stupidly low deal since stafford got 135 million, 50 million bonus, and 92 million guarenteed. he deserves to get a deal similar to stafford
except i already showed they can afford him. without even making cuts. it's not like they are entering the offseason with no cap room, they have 60+million
I will be shocked if they give him that type of money. Stafford has been putting up monster numbers for 7 consecutive years, while I'm not discounting Kirk and his ability to continue to put up similar numbers, I can see why the redskins are hesitating to give him a $135 million dollar contract. However, since they are potentially half way into a $100 million dollar contract, they should just bite the bullet and make him a redskin for the long term. As Da put it, they gambled that he was not a FQB and he has proven them wrong.
cousins numbers are very comparable to stafford and carr so his deal should be as well. and he's done it for 3 years in a row. I wouldn't be surprised if SF pays garapolo more then the skins offered cousins. and to be fair Carr and stafford have a better supporting cast
You Cousins homers need to read Br4ds brilliant post from yesterday: "Do the Jets pick up a good mid career QB approaching his likely decline phase but not there yet?" In short he gets injured or disappoints...and the Jets lose cap $ for the rebuild on OL for example Cousins ain't that good against the best competition and people are under the misguided belief he has 4-5 more good years ...this is quick fix all over again and a regression to the Brett Favre deal
Another reason to just build and develop a kid Where are the Raiders and Lions going with two good QBs ...? ???? No SB guarantee just $ to the player and his Agent BTW I banged the drum loudly for Idzik to draft Jimmie G ...see what happens??
it takes more then 1 player to win a SB, in the same sense it's rare in todays NFL you win a SB without a franchise QB. it's just one piece of the puzzle but the largest piece. You'd spend a lot more on other positions trying to compensate for the lack of a QB then you would on having a good QB
cousins is 29 favre was 40 when we signed him. favre also started off great until he got hurt and hid it, and then went to minn and played great at 41. brady is kicking ass at 40+ still as is brees. Ben, rivers, rodgers, all in their mid 30s. If you look at the top 10 passing leaders 6 are in their mid 30 or more. Cousins has at least 5 good years left but likely at least 7-8
