What WRs do you want to get ? Martavis Bryant ? Jarvis Landry ? We are fine at wr. You could go give cousins 50m in year one and still have money to sign whatever olinemen you want.

With the amount of cap we have we could theoretically give Cousins 40m in year one and give us an out in years 3 or 4.

If the Jets intelligence center isn't totally confident in the Josh Allen's or Lamar Jackson's of the world the two seductive things about going the Kirk Cousins route is that A) you "know" he'll be good whereas a draft pick might be a bust and B) you now have a #6 or whatever overall pick to get a potentially impact rookie at another position.

Its bird in the hand instead of 2 or 3 in the bushes. If you draft Josh Allen and he ends up being a bullseye you have a 10-15 year solution instead of 5ish years of being "pretty good". But at least the Cousins way you know your going to at worst be pretty good.

One doesn't achieve greatness by playing it safe. One has to take risks to get rewards.

Why does this have to be the time to take said risk? There is a top 10 qb out there who will fall into our laps if we offer the right amount. Take the risk 4 years down the road and let him develop under a good qb.

Well I actually kind of agree with that and I'd be tempted to go with Josh Allen but I don't pretend to know anything about evaluation quarterbacks. He looks like he might be awesome to me but I then again I thought Petty had some skill in him and he hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn the last two weeks.

I'm just saying that the counter argument to doing something like that is pretty strong. Cousins and a #6ish top pick for the next 5 years. I think you could make playoff runs with that if everything else develops nicely.

That's why I say that the solution to the 2018 Jets' QB situation is the same as the solution to the 1965 Jets' QB situation:

Draft a QB in each of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 7th rounds.

    Weeb did it and won.

I can't knock the arm strength, he does have a cannon which allows him to get so much air under his throws, I believe that is a good quality to have versus the opposite which is having to learn to put air under the ball.

We saw Petty miss a wide open Kearse for a TD last week because he couldn't pass the ball with enough air under it to allow Kearse to run under it.

Then we saw Rivers constantly drop the ball in the receivers hands against bracket coverage.

I have stated this before and I will say it again, this class of QBs has a chance of being one of the best classes of QBs coming out of college. They all have their wrinkles they need to iron out, and I'm not saying this class will turn out a ton of FQB, but 5 or 6 of these guys can be starters for 10 years in the NFL if drafted by right teams and developed properly.

With all his yards and stats, how many times has Cousins led the Redskins into the playoffs? Even if he gets the Jets in a time or two, they won't have a realistic chance of winning it all, or sustaining that success.

That's what the Jets should be about...developing sustainable success. Not going all in hoping that they can luck into a SB victory once.

Giants are considered one of the best franchises in the NFL by lucking into SB victories. I’ll gladly take a lucky SB victory.

Thank you. Mac would be wise to stay away from Cousins. He's a middle of the road QB that the Redskins have vaulted into the discussion of being a potential franchise QB by franchising him twice. Even the Redskins aren't sure that they want to make a commitment to the guy, and they see him play and practice every day. Mac needs to stay far, far away from this bidding war.

Even if the Jets want and go after Cousins, there is little chance he ends up on the Jets. He has stated he wants to win.Despite the 5 win season, this team has a number of large holes to fill be be competitive. Cousins will likely have better options and teams that will be willing to pay him that are in win now mode - for example - Denver, Pittsburgh (Roethlesberger almost retired last year and he may retire this offseason) Jacksonville (even with a playoff berth, have they had enough of Bortles), Buffalo (they don't like Taylor and benching him for one game may have cost them a playoff berth), Arizona.

As for McCown, why do Jets fans want him back? What did McCown having a career year do for the Jets except cost the Jets a top draft pick by having a career year when the Jets least needed it. This was Fitzpatrick redux. McCown did not all of a sudden have the light bulb go on at age 38. He will regress to his mean next season, which is terrible. Let him go somewhere else next season.

The Jets need to draft a QB in the first round, provided they like what is left at pick 6-8. It is likely that Rosen, Darnold, Allen and maybe one more of Mayfield or Jackson is gone by that pick. Rosen and Darnold likely go 1-2. Denver appears to like Allen. Buffalo has the picks to trade up with SF or Cleveland and pick a fourth QB before the Jets pick. The nightmare scenario for the Jets this season was to win just enough games to take them out of the running for a top draft pick and they managed to do it. So Bowles kept his job and Jets fans are potentially left with another 5 years of crap football because the FO and the fans just cant take the long view, ever.

The Jets cannot blow this pick by reaching for Mayfield or Jackson. That is my biggest fear. Would ruin the franchise for years.

Bell seems to be an extremely rare type of RB that doesn’t need good blocking to succeed. Plus, he’s great in pass blocking and a phenomenal receiver.

The problem is he’s going to try to change the game as far as RB contracts are concerned. I think I read an article last year about him wanting to be paid as both an RB and WR because of all the work he does in the passing game. Hopefully he gets humbled a little bit because it sounds like he’s going to ask for $20M and even with the cap space we can’t use that on a running back, even one as transformative as him.

Edit: yea he’s looking for $15M a year and turned down a 5-year contract from Pittsburgh that paid $18M in year one. Sheesh.

Well, then no franchise QB will be drafted this year...... again. Thanks to Bowles and McCown. Petty/Hackenberg should have started from week 1. What was the point of playing McCown?????

The same people who hate cousins are the ones who knock Romo for being bad because he only has 1 playoff win.

“Kirk Cousins’ QB Rating by year:

    2015 - 102
    2016 - 97.2
    2017 - 98.5

McVay is great, but Cousins’ success has everything to do with the fact he’s an excellent QB. He was excellent again this year, in spite of everything.”

“Kirk Cousins had a depleted OL, no consistency at WR, no Jordan Reed, Chris Thompson was hurt mid-season, and Josh Doctson hasn’t broken out — and he’s *still* 6th in YPA (7.8), QB Rating (98.5), and Pass TD Rate (5.4%). He’s incredible.”

A little more from Graham Barfield. I literally agree with everything he is saying.

I don’t understand why a qb starved fan base would be against signing this guy. It really boggles the mind

It’s honestly comical at this point. We are set up perfectly to land him with the way the cap is set up.
    1) You front load the shit out of it and give yourself an out later down the road. Kind of like we did with Deckers deal (remember how mad people got that we paid him so much since he wasn’t a WR1 - HELLO WE HAD AN OUT!!!)
    2) You maintain flexibility in the draft with having 3 picks in the top 40.
    3) Even if you gave him 50m upfront in year One!! F I F T Y MILLION!!! You are left with ~30!!

It is an absolute no brainer. We will have top 10 qb play in NY for the next 5 years. And guess what? Brady, Ben, Rivers, Flacco. All of the QBs in the AFC are on the decline! Who do we have to worry about? Derek Carr? Mariota? Maholmes who hasn’t even taken a snap? The amount of people against this on this forum is sickening.
