If the HC doesn't report to the GM, what would they care about the GM being a lame duck?

This is why it's good to have that non-linear reporting structure, with each guy accountable for their own role.

I agree with the non linear structure, just not sure any good candidates would sign up no there could be changes at gm. Too much unknown and instability

Door No. 3 is a pretty easy choice. Mac's done nothing to specifically deserve the punt, and had the balls to dump all the high-priced drama queens he inherited.

I think the coaching candidates would prefer to report directly to the top, and not through a GM (who are typically glorified scouts or accountants).
They'd probably also like knowing that a GM failing at their job will not affect the coach's job.

He didn't inherit any high-priced drama queens. He signed them.

I’m sure they would also like to know who they will be working with for the next 2 years at least. I don’t know, to me that scenario is not a good look.

As long as the GM makes the call on what head coach to hire, what players to sign/draft, then I really don't care who reports to who.

The GM has input in terms of who gets hired. Remember, they both came together. He doesn't have the power to fire the coach. He does however have full command of the 53 man roster (sign / draft), Bowles decides who plays.

I would have voted to let them both stay for 2018 and see how things play out. With them not shutting down Wilkerson , risking being on the hook for his contact if injured , especially after his comments today. They need to go.

There's multiple choices to choose from. Four to be exact. You may only make one choice, but douche nozzle couldn't make one.

That's my position. What it comes down to is will the Jets be an attractive destination compared to other openings for potential candidates? I think so. We have plenty of cap space, some decent young players, and have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds of the 2018 Draft.

They'll most likely get one more shot next year. Neither deserves an extension at this point.

No, no, NO. That makes zero sense. You're willing to give Bowles another year although he has shown little, if any, real improvement, yet you're only going to give the new HC one year, when in all likelihood there could be new offensive and defensive systems? That is totally illogical. Epic fail.

A big part of the problem here is that Bowles has been a peer of Mac's rather than a subordinate, so Mac had little control over developing the young QBs, the level of discipline (or lack thereof), or about anything else pertaining to the team and how it played.

If Mac gets to hire his own HC and that HC reports to Mac, then there would be control and we'd have a better idea of the vision that Mac has for the team, and how successful he was at instituting that vision and changing the culture. In that scenario, Mac and his HC should get 3 years to transform the culture and show a marked level of talent and play on the field. That provides stability and avoids the Browns syndrome.

So you don't allow Mac to choose his own HC, and to a large extent he is at Bowles' mercy, yet you hire DeCosta and allow him to hire his own HC. That's a double standard. It does no one any good if Mac and Bowles work against each other and have polar opposite approaches, philosophies, etc. If you're going to be consistent and fair, Mac deserves to be able to hire his own HC and be in control of the franchise and not have to deal with the stooge that Woody hired.

Why give DeCosta such control and power? What's he done?? Baltimore hasn't drafted particularly well the last several years, and have been little better than the Jets in finding a FQB.

IMO you're flat out wrong about their not requiring a linear structure and your rational is verklemt.

If they are peers, rather than a linear structure, a HC can make a GM look bad, and vice-versa when they don't agree, and when you have a totally clueless doofus like Woody owning the team, he doesn't know who is right or who to believe. The HC and GM need to be on the same page regarding systems, personnel, and the development of young players. It has become pretty darned clear that Mac and Bowles haven't been on the same page. It relates to drafting the right players for the HC's schemes, particularly the right QB and then building the offense and team around him, and the HC actually working to develop and then play that QB. If the HC and GM don't agree then they're working at cross purposes, instead of together, or one is just forced to go along by Woody, and their heart and passion aren't in it. GMs are higher up the organizational ladder, and especially when you have a total doofus as an owner, you need someone with real football knowledge and experience running the team. The only way a HC gets to do that is with a HC like Parcells, Payton and a few select others.

You keep saying this, yet you have never given one compelling reason why the GM and HC should be peers, or any real facts to support your perspective.

What BS! Chris Johnson could clearly see that Mac and Bowles haven't been and aren't on the same page, and easily decided to fire Bowles, let Mac hire his own HC, and make the HC a subordinate of Mac.

I know giving the new HC one year makes no sense. Which means firing Bowles but keeping Mac implies that Mac gets a 3 year extension. Which given his record drafting players, signing FAs, and picking quarterbacks he does not deserve.

That option is no good imo. Just having some input on the hiring is insufficient, when that coach has too many ways that he could sabotage the good work that Mac does, particularly with the dumbass Johnson brothers making the hire. Mac needs to be the boss, and to be able to choose his own HC to insure that they are on the same page and are working together. Otherwise it really risks the same situation we've had for the last 3 years where Mac and Bowles aren't working together or on the same page. Mac drafted some young QBs and expected that they'd be developed and given a chance to play, especially in a rebuilding year, and Bowles was coaching for his job, and couldn't have cared less about developing young QBs.

Mac may not be able to hire an experienced offensive HC, and the best that is available is another OC or a collegiate HC with little or no NFL experience. Then the development of that young QB and team might be in the hands of an inexperienced HC. Mac could make all the right moves, and still wind up getting fired because of the job the HC did in his first year.

Mac could draft a really good FQB prospect, but the new HC could fail to develop him in one year, especially if the offense is a different system than what he is used to and not built around the QB.

If Mac stays, then he and his HC should be tied at the hip, and given 3 years to produce a playoff caliber team. That maintains some stability, and I'd feel a lot more confident in the team's fortunes if Mac is calling the shots rather than the Johnsons.
