Looking at it another way, if the Colts draft another QB, it would put them a in a very precarious position because you know at that point that Luck is not wanted and may demand a trade. That could lower the value a bit - but to what extent the price will be will have to be determined at draft day. Jets would have to ensure that their OL is up to par as I think Luck would be very choosy as to his next destination. He's still only 28 so there's a lot left in the tank.

Yeah playing that equally power house South Dakota State. Problem solve the Jets should just go to NDSU for our next QB. Come on man.

I liked Wentz more than any prospect in the last 5 years or so.
He's a physical specimen, athletic, strong armed, good tape and experience, good leader and high character guy.
I did figure he'd need a little development time to acclimate to better competition, but so far he's even exceeded my expectations.

I don't really feel that way about Rosen or Darnold.
No way I'm dealing five high round draft picks to move up for either of them.
That's just way too much risk for players with lots of question marks.
I'm not saying that neither guy will succeed, but I wouldn't bank our next several seasons on it. Would you?

It's more realistic to look at the other options, as the strength of this QB draft is it's depth.
There aren't any clear blue chippers imo.

I'd like to see what Josh Allen can do against pro level competition.
Hopefully he goes to the senior bowl.

Not necessarily, gotta see how the draft position finishes out, Lamar is a wild card that can go from the top 10 to the end of the first. You got Mayfield who will rise to the top 10 if he has a good bowl performance. Josh Allen, someone will fall in love with him.

I don't think the cheap Mac shots are worth it, he will be back next year.

Anywhere from top 10 to the end of the first. Sadly the combine will open eyes, which isn't the reason why anyone should like Lamar.

It's all really a crap shoot like a previous poster stated. I've been watching drafts for decades and the ones you think would be superstars are bust (Eason, George, Leaf) and the ones drafted later (Montana, Favre, Brady) turn out to be great. It's driven by what scheme these guys are put into and really nothing else. Yes talent is huge but when it all lines up for you there is nothing better. Plus coaches that are able to recognized a players strengths and weaknesses and work with it instead of trying to change him.

  8. Agreed. The jets have repeatedly passed on great QB prospects bc they don’t fit the scheme..

Many great QBs need an offense catered to them. The jets are completely unwilling to do this bc the lack imagination & Defensive head coaches aren’t interested in creative offense. What exactly has their conservative offensive scheme yielded? What are they holding onto? Your guess is as good as mine.

I don't think the bold is true at all. In fact, I feel the opposite to be true; we routinely drafting QB prospects that are terrible fits for the schemes we are running at the time (i.e., Sanchez, Geno, Petty, Hackenberg...etc.) while passing on those that fit like a glove.

Why draft Hackenberg into Gailey's Spread based offense after seeing his college production take a precipice nose dive under that same system? The very small minority of scouts that thought Hackenberg was worthy of a Day 2 grade, ALL blamed the Spread offense for his regression. Hackenberg all but said the same thing in his Gruden camp special. It made absolutely no sense to draft him for that offense. At the time I thought Mac must have known Gailey would be out the door in a year and that's why the plan was to redshirt him until we brought in an OC with a scheme more catered to his style of play. But after we brought in Morton to implement the WCO, I realized Mac was just an idiot.

Conversely, I was one of the few pounding the table for Mahomes last year. It was not just because of his rare arm talent but because of his PERFECT FIT IMO for the WCO, the offense our new OC Morton was planning to implement. We passed. The current czar of the WCO, Andy Reid must have saw the same things I saw cause he "mortgaged the future" to get him. This is despite having won 12 games with a 32 years old Alex Smith the year before. But hey we got ourselves an in-the-box safety who I hear is a leader...oh joy!

interesting point on Mahomes and the WCO fit.
It's not the easiest offense for a young QB.

Who do you like from this year's crop?

I hate scared coaches and Bowels is scared of his own shadow. It's a miracle he even leaves his house. I would rather lose going for it than dialing up run left, run right. The Jets always get these type coaches and in the end that is what gets them fired.

I actually think you're both right: they've drafted guys and tried to force them into systems they didn't fit, and they also passed on guys who would've fit, but decided there were "better options", or whatever their rationale was.

The fact remains though as you point out here, you need to identify a guy who you want to build not only your team, but your identity around, and then make your decision around that guy and his skillset. Unfortunately I don't see Macc doing this. From my perspective it's the owner who makes this decision, and then directs his organization to do it. Has anyone heard Woody (or Hess before him) say, "This is what the Jets look like"? The last time anyone said that was Werblin and Ewbank, and "strangely" enough that was the last time the Jets were really any good.

I would love it if Chris Johnson stepped up and described what the NY Jets look like, and then told his subordinates to find players that fit that mold and coaches that did too. Until that day happens, I think it's just going to continue being a "rinse and repeat" franchise.

Can't believe the negativity...every QB 2018 will be another Ryan Leaf or bust..BS ....Greensleeves posted that historically round 1 QBs are 63 per cent favored to achieve..but no everyone gotta be a darksider

Recent history proves moves me right : Goff Wentz Mariotta Trubitsky Winston all are succeeding in the League

Don't say I didn't tell ya so when Rosen and Darnold are passing this league apart..Mayfield too

Then TGG will be watching with our mouths open and pants down...hahahah

That's what bad GMs tell their owners when they are about to get fired.

Regarding Mayfield, I try to stay away from Big 12 QBs unless they have rare arm talent like Mahomes did.

  19. I have Alittle theory as to why the Jets always have these fraidy cat HC’s..

Woody being as football clueless as he is,is forced to follow conventional wisdom mantras to the highest extent bc He doesn’t have any creativity, fortitude regarding the sport to fall back on.

Example:He’s gone “opposite” personality types from head coach to head coach.Edwards was a Yay rah rah vanilla cover 2 guy-Mangini was a close to the vest complicated scheme authoritarian-Rex was Rex-Bowles is about as stoic as it gets..this is an old adage”when you fire a coach you always go opposite”

Now to my point, there’s another old adage that a HC should reflect the owners own overriding philosophy if not w football than other avenues.Woody is by all accounts a very conservative tightly wound enigma; While some of their methods & personalities have been different at the end of the day they’ve all been conservative Defensive first. This could very well be by design

If it's a crapshoot, I need to be playing the lotto as I've been on quite a run as of late. I do agree with you on the scheme aspect though; that is very important.
