I don't believe any of that nonsense comes into play? McCown is in the twilight of his career. He'll get a raise for sure, but the Jets won't be paying him as if he's there for all of 2018. Mac just needs a stop gap to play some fraction of 2018, when the CS decides to throw the rookie into the fire. Who that rookie is? God only knows. He has yet to join the Jets.

That is the million dollar question CC. If they see them everyday and they're so bad why didn't the GM get some better QB's on the roster. Instead of drafting back to back safeties. GM job is to access the entire roster not just one part of it.

Okay. My head cooled down a little bit. Here's my two cents: 1. His mechanics look very bad. His sight adjustment needs a major hauling. 2. It looked like he was playing scared. Not of NO defense, but of mistakes. There were more than a handful of cases where he could have extended the play with his foot, and shoot for something. Each time he threw away instead. Okay - that does protect the football, but that's not how to win games either. Is it on Petty? Maybe. But I'd think it's on someone else. [Namely, that toilet of a head coach.] 3. His horrible mechanics is more likely the problem of Jets coaching staff. Jets knew he never took snaps under the center, yet still drafted the kid. This means, the front office took the kid, knowing what kind of mechanical shift they will have to bring in Petty, fully aware of the situation well ahead of the time. For this reason, I find that blaming Petty for his bad mechanics is a bit too harsh. If anything, that's testament to how terrible the coaching staff has been for coaching young QB kids. [Yes. This means picking a QB in the 1st next year will fail again. Jets need some better organizational structure in terms of nearly god-damned EVERYTHING.] 4. Morton certainly did not help. And I am not talking about this ultra-conservative play calling either. Most of the time, Petty broke the huddle at 15 second mark, if not later. Under the center, he usually had 10 seconds or less. McCown would have been fine with that, but Petty is not a 18 year vet that McCown is. If Morton could give Petty 10 extra seconds at each huddle, things wouldn't have looked this bad. Seriously - think about it. I can see Morton gauging the down and distance himself, but he shouldn't have to eat up more than 20 seconds of the play clock each and every down. Since Petty had no time on his hand, he literally couldn't do diddly poo during the pre-snap all game long. 5. When he could launch the football deep, his balls look dead on. Which makes sense. Seriously, unless you are throwing RB flats all game long - and even that gets hard after a while - short passing is actually harder than the long pass. Especially when the opposing DBs do not respect the air attack much. Just take today's game for example. Did anyone of you find a wide open WR in the short distance range? This is only natural; DLs and CBs start off at the LoS, and LBs and Nickle/Dimes play 5 yard back at most. Upon snap, the DBs all latched on to the receivers. There wasn't much separation all game long. Maybe it's Petty not finding the open receiver, but last time I checked, not many had a clean release, much less beat the receiver for a step or two. In short, short passing attack isn't going to be a strength of a young QB. Intermediate/deep passing attack simplifies the coverage reading considerably instead. You know if you have your man or not, and even then there isn't much of a chance for "unseen defender" to get in the way and do some real damage. 6. I said Morton didn't help much, but his play calling wasn't his best. [And may I say his play designs too. I had this gripe over McCown days, mind you. I am only bringing it up now as I find it a good time to do so.] I was hoping to see a lot of short passing attack that features screen passes, quick slants and quick outs. There are more than one way to utilize screen passes, and Jets have a very good receiving back in Forte. And I didn't see a single screen call when I watched. [I got disgusted by the 4th so I turned the PC off. Maybe Morton did call screens in those times. I wouldn't know.] Maybe Anderson is not fit for quick slant / quick out etc, but he could take the top off - as anyone would be able to tell you. Yet I haven't seen any combination routes that utilizes his threat effectively, like smash [Curl/corner route combination] Were they trying to help Petty? Maybe, but the play calls say otherwise. i.e. I haven't seen Anderson and Kearse on the same side. They even had ASJ to tinker with. With Anderson and Kearse on the same side, Anderson would be the slot WR and Kearse would be the split end. If it's man-to-man coverage, you know you have a deep option in Anderson. If it's a zone coverage, you've got Kearse on the hook with Anderson streaking down on the corner route. That alone will be pretty difficult to defend, and will be easy for Petty to read. Another good combination would have been Dig/Post, again with Kearse outside and Anderson inside. With ASJ - ASJ would flex in the slot with Kearse outside. Either way, these combination routes simplifies the reading for Petty without sacrificing anything. I haven't seen any of that today. Or - how about Anderson clearing out? I didn't see that. Or Kearse/ASJ rub/pick play? Nope. That wasn't there either. If these are too long to develop, how about slant/flat combo? Nope. These combination routes are too complicated for someone I'm not going to say who. [This is one of the reasons I preferred E/P offense instead of WCO.] 7. Of course, we can't ignore that spectacular protection the OL gave Petty today, right? This fucking protection was #1 cause of the Petty throwaway. The protection would collapse just when Petty is about to do something - and that's a good protection. In worse cases, Petty was running for his life almost right after the snap. 8. And dropsies. [Yes. Anderson. YOU.] 9. I recall some mentioning Brett Hundley being better prospect, and he looks better now. I say utter bullshit. Hell. Matt Flynn looked real good in GB. The difference is, Mike McCarthy knows how to train a QB. Toilet doesn't. If you are not convinced, go back to Matt Flynn and make sense of it. 10. So - there you have it. Today's outing was indeed very disappointing, but then Petty didn't have much help either. Like last year. Add to the fact that his coaches have done almost absolutely fucking NOTHING. [as seen from his god-awful throwing mechanics.] He will look brutal for the next two games.
Look the Saints are a good team, especially at home, and the Jets defense deserves a lot of credit. They did a great job until the Ingram 50 yard run. The Jets would have won this game if McCown was not hurt. I know many of you see this as another loss, but I saw many good things for the Jets here. McCown is not your future QB, but neither is Petty or Hack. I am sorry to be brutally honest, but I am perplexed why Jet fans keep trashing the coaching staff for starting McCown who is your best QB right now. The offensive line and a franchise QB should be the future plan. Next year's draft may just have your franchise QB.
The 2018 draft and free agency are along way away. There are no guarantees that the Jets will be able to draft that FQB. I frankly have my doubts they will be able to identify the right QB and have him available at their pick. An even if they get a quality QB I dont think they have the brain trust required to develop that guy. On top of that, this fanbase has no patience for young QB's. Petty has 5 starts and most of this board wants the guy thrown out on the street. Would they have wanted Jared Goff in his second year after his awful rookie season? As for Petty, I still feel like he has alot of very good qualities. But he needs to fix his footwork and improve his short accuracy in the next few weeks.
Obviously not. He's just pointing out that O'Brien was a good player in his own right and that a bunch of teams passed on Marino, so we really shouldn't hold anything against the Jets regarding that draft. Of course, it's always somewhat of a disaster when you pass on a guy like Marino, lol
Thanks for the in depth analysis. I didn't see the game so I really can't say much, but I can understand where Petty had a lot going against him - as usual. I mean if you say that he has terrible mechanics and hasn't improved at all, is that all on him, or does lack of good coaching come into it? Not to mention game planning to take advantage - or not - of your QBs strengths, which the Jets do't seem to do.Maybe he is really worse than a 2 story outhouse, but if so, why in god's name didn't Macc address this before? I still think that he's actually better than the prevailing opinions here, and that poor coaching has held him back. Somebody here said that he's played five games and hasn't looked good in any of them. REALLY? A whole FIVE games! And he isn't fully up to speed yet? Yep! Cut him, he'll never make it! But I wonder how many HOF QBs would've never made it if they were judged on their first 5 games? And small point here, but he DID win one game on the road, so I wouldn't agree that he hasn't had even one good game. How about we let him play the next two games and see what happens, and take into account the effect the shitty coaching has too?
You and others may be right, but how the hell has he lasted for three years if that's true? The problem is MUCH bigger than Petty's brains or mechanics, and lies above him, all the way to ownership.
Because the strategy of defensive coaches is to play mistake free football. It’s a garbage strategy on 2017 because offsenses can get down the field in seconds between defenses not being allowed to hold and defensive pass interference penalties. Of course mistake free ball is always preferred but relying on your defense to carry you 16 games a season doesn’t work anymore. Sick of defensive coaches ruining this team. If they hire another defensive coordinator to be our next head coach I’m done.
sometimes there is a reason for what we watched and its called lack of talent, the coaches can only do so much, you look at all the great coaching QB combinations over the years and its about talent, none of these coaches would be considered great unless there got lucky and found that Tom Bradly, after 3yrs I fully expected way more from Bryce specially since Josh came on the screen, Bryce hasn't shown himself to be ready to start for the Browns
