It doesn't say much for our QB development if Petty's first read - almost every time - was always to a player 5 yards to his right.
I doubt that. We really need to stop blaming the coach for pettys development. Petty just doesn't have it. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I think today you witnessed the reason why we didn't go young at QB this year..both are probably not even back up material...two total busts time to move on already.
And what does that tell everyone about Hack? After that horrible performance Petty put forth, Hack can't get a chance from the HC. I guess I'm convinced at this point that the only QB that should return next season is McCown. Lets be honest here, McCown is the only QB that deserves to return. The other two should try their luck at selling life Insurance.
We saw Hack lay an egg in preseason. If you think Petty is bad you don't want any part of Hack this year.
Now - I can't let that one go. Be respectful to all the insurance salesmen out there. What's wrong with insurance salesman anyway? This man almost was one too!
Being a rookie was not the issue, though I agree it's not about comparing both's ability. But Elway played waay more games than Petty did in those 2 years. Waaay more. And that's what counts the most - experience.
The game plan was overall conservative and they tried to mask Petty as much as possible. Petty showed why he isn't a starter.....short hopping passes that are 7 yards out simply won't cut it. I think that he can be a pretty stable back up in the NFL but I don't think he will be a QB that can start consistently and win you games in big spots. I don't think our starting QB for 2018 is on this roster.
Yes, Josh McCown is the only QB in the roster that can run this offense. There is a reason why Petty and Hack aren't starting. Did anyone not notice that Petty can't even make the short throws? McCown was clearly your best QB this year, hopefully the Jets can find their future franchise QB in the draft of free agency. The sad part is the Jets could have actually won this game if McCown wasn't injured.
McNown isn't coming back this year which means two more weeks of Petty. Either he continues to play like he did this week or he steps up enough to let us know if we at least have our backup QB on the roster. Funny how everyone that wants us to use a high first rounder on a rookie has a hard time giving the young guys a chance to get on the field for some hands on experience. One bad game does not make for a bad QB. Three bad games in a row might tell a different story.
I do. McCown is the starter opening day of 2018. You probably hate the idea of that as much as I do, but it's a fact that we might as well start getting used to. The silver lining, however, I am confident Mac realizes that the current status quo must change? He must realize by now that Petty and Hack could not even be backups on other teams? Mac knows he's going to have to acquire TWO new QB's. He's either going to acquire one through FA and another in the draft or both in the draft. Either way this current situation is a total clusterfuck of Mac's doing. The Jets are paying guys that should have already been relegated to the unemployment line.
Petty's performance against the Saints: Cons: INCONSISTENT. >50% completion wont cut it. Showed poor footwork at times. I thought his footwork was better last year. Way too many inaccurate passes. At least 4 passes that bounced in front of Anderson and even completes on short passes were off target/missed YAC opportunities. Allignment/too many players on field. Petty's fault? Didnt happen with McCown so I assume some of it was on Petty. Pros: Protected the ball....Two interceptions, but the first should have been a PI call and the second was desperation time and his WR fell down as the ball came in. Showed poise on scrambles. Had some very nice throws, 38 yarder to McGuire, 24 yarder over the top to Chad Hanson, avoiding the free rush and throwing on the run to Natson for 19 yard gain. Otherwise the gameplan was very conservative and it was dump offs most of the game. When the gameplan was opened up in the 4th qtr, Petty was able to get a TD and bring the Jets within 4 pts with under 2 mins remaining. If the Jets didnt screw up the onside kick it could have been interesting. Some Points: Hard to tell whether the conservative gameplan was because of limitations of Petty, the running game was working, or some combination. It nearly worked in this instance, but one of Bowles' major flaws is he is too conservative. After the Skrine 4th qtr fumble recovery, the Saints are on their heels and the Jets have a chance to steal one. What are the play calls? Runs and dump off passes. They should have taken a downfield shot right there. McCowns a good guy, and a tough player. And I understand why the Jets made him the starter at the beginning of the season. But if Petty gave the Jets this kind of performance in week 5 rather than week 15, protecting the ball and making a few decent throws, I wonder what the perception of Petty would be. I think most on this board would think he gave you something to build on. Maybe the Jets only win 3 games with Petty instead of 5 with McCown. Maybe Petty gets better as the season goes on and they win 5 or more. Either way I think its a wash. Petty looks like a servicible backup/bridge QB until they find their franchise guy.
If McCown is back, it best not be in a similar fashion as Fitz. No long contract standoffs, no paying 12 mil, and no blind loyalty. If he isn't going to sign for us for a reasonable 9-10 mil then bounce. Also, this is all assuming Jets don't just go after Cousins if he reaches free agency. I can think of one way McCown ends up on this team again and that is if we are going to draft a QB. Otherwise it simply won't make sense to spend that kinda cap space on Qb's (Cousins & McCown). Maccagnan has essentially had 3 years to find a solution at QB and instead has skirted by with journeymen QB's winning games. This nearly cost him his job in year 2, I'd expect it to again be a huge problem going forward if not addressed. Can't expect to stay on at GM if you consistently miss on QB's in the draft. No matter what the pick is.
