Aside from a few big plays, the whole team was a shit show today yet the game was almost within reach. While he clearly showed some rust and may have been nervous I don't see how blaming the guy who has had zero chances to play until now makes any sense. We have two more games without McNown so cut the kid some slack for now. There are far too many other coaches and players who have no excuse that let us down today.
I couldn't disagree more. I thought the rest of the team brought it today. Petty just isnt a starting qb. At some point you have to stop making excuses for him. He looks no better than he did as a rookie to be quite honest. Its just what it is, but Hack is worse, so he starts. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
oh no, this game does not count, he only got one week with the starters and it was cold all week so its tough to practice. and the team knew they weren't going to win so they probably checked out and quit, and the play calling was terrible and bowles is emotionless so thats not helping, and its like 70 degrees in there and he practiced in the cold all week so that doesn't help either. i'm going to see him week 1 of next year after getting every single training camp and preseason snap with an oc of his choosing in a balmy 65 degree weather, slight breeze east to west little bit of cloud cover, running only plays that he approves of pre game. then and only then will we know what petty is amiright?
McNown has been playing at a pro bowl level with no offensive line and very little help at the skill positions. I think you are setting the bar a little high.
This theory that coaches can watch a young player every day in practice -- EVERY SINGLE DAY -- and yet the player's abilities remain an utter mystery until it's a "real game"... I've never understood it.
I didn't see the game - not televised here, but I'll take the Petty Hater's word for it that he sucked. That said, if his mechanics are really this bad after 3 years, how is that not an indictment of the the coaching and GM? You mean so-called "experienced" football men couldn't tell that Petty's mechanics were this bad? WTF didn't Macc draft a QB this year? Or maybe, Petty's just rusty becuase he hasn't practiced/played with the 1st team? But really, going into this season with a 38 year old journeyman with injury history, and two guys who can't throw? How do you explain that?
What bar expecting Petty to look better than Geno Smith. Which he clearly is not. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Posters on the game thread was complaining about why the CS was not "letting him" throw the ball downfield. It was obvious, to them, that he was more accurate on the deep and intermediate throws. It's crazy talk but even if that was true, you can't be an effective QB if you can't attack all level of the defense. The short and shallow stuff game keeps the offense on schedule and opens up the deeper throws. While shots down field, keeps the defense honest creating the space for the underneath stuff. It all works hand and hand. You can't win with a QB that can't complete the "gimme" throws.
You dont learn footwork and arm mechanics at the pro level. Thats stuff you should know before and into college relatively early. The NFL does not have time to teach these things. These players need to learn new offenses, how to read defenses, and getting in sync with teammates. Its been 3 years and if bryce cant find a coach in the off-season to learn these things, thats on him. Look at brady, he still works his ass off on his own time. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Mac so far has drafted 2 big arm QBs with bad mechanics so that pretty much tells us he will be drafting Josh Allen.
I disagree. Thought the defense played pretty well today. They were up against the No. 1 offense in the league and held them to a very manageable score. You can't expect to win games when you can't put points on the board. And you especially can't win games when you're behind late in the game and all you can do is run. I think this game should dispel any notion that Petty can be a starting NFL QB.
All well and good, but didn't anyone know this about him, or learn it in the last three years? Saying "Petty sucks and will never be a pro QB" overlooks the REAL problem: We don't have the knowledge to find/develop a decent QB.
