I do not disagree with your approach at all. My big bitch is not who we pick, is the fact that, at least in my opinion, Bowles is not a good enough coach to know what to do with the talent he gets and put them in the best position to win. Specially in the defensive side of the ball.
I'm not disagreeing with anything written here but I also feel like your post doesn't really touch upon what I was referring to. For example, if Darnold, Rosen, and Jackson are off the board by the 6th-10th pick, the Jets will be forced to decide between potentially higher grading players like Chubb, Key, or Barkley over Mayfield, Allen, Rudolph... My position is still to take Rosen or Darnold (with a strong preference for Rosen) at all costs. But if these guys are taken, the Jets may be forced to draft a pass rusher and find a QB in free agency. Edit: I'm identifying these areas of need in order of importance: QB -> DE/OLB -> OL
If you're gonna find a way to dominate on D it's likely from some sort of fierce pass rush via the front 7. Jets have had a at least a good front 7(excluding the edge) for a good number of years. We've seen the type of performances you're talking about in which a good passing game can be somewhat neutralized when the DL are collpasing the pocket & disrupting gaps.. But week to week dominance or even effectiveness we haven't seen in the league it quite sometime. You've still gotta have horses on D, be sound situationally & be able to make adjustments..but the notion of winning solely with defense as it relates to the now is primitive & outdated. I agree about Bowles defensively. He has some intriguing ideas but they don't really translate to the field. Playing 3 down men who 1 gap on every play, off coverage at critical junctures & this whole hybrid safety deon Buchanon thing;Which really isn't all that inventive or creative at all. It's basically just a rover who can either come down into the box, pick up a coverage assignment or drop deep. He keeps sticking w. his guy Kacy Rogers despite it being his name on the product. The only philosophy I like that he's put into action is the prototypes in the secondary. I like the idea of having 2 interchangeable safeties who can play both high & low to go along w. tall & long corners who can press & release. But despite this philosophy it hasn't made the defense any better & is a far cry from considering him a bright defensive mind.
Weren't Williams & Adams supposed to be Watt Caliber? Even Lee was thought to be an explosive ball hawk. They could land the trade down scenario of the last 50 years & somehow end up w. the best pass rusher, corner & Nose in this draft...wouldn't excite me in the least & I think many other fans would feel the same. Rinse & repeat.
Of course we need balance. That's the exact reason we should stop drafting defense every.single.year. I don't think it's crying over spilled milk. Building a football team means sometimes viewing things from a wider scope. When you make 10 straight first round picks on D during a stretch when the entire rest of the league emphasizes scoring & then see absolutely no results from going defense.. doesn't that scream for a change in approach & philosophy?? I agree it's irresponsible to take offense for the sake of taking offense...but at some point the team has gotta break the cycle. Seems like every year for the past 5 years we hear how loaded the draft is w. defensive talent. As such every year the "best player available" when we select is on defense..somewhere down the line sensibility needs to rule the day. We've gotten absolutely nowhere drafting defense. Fans aren't stupid.
If they do have fun guys ...you will NEVER reach a SB..not in a pass happy league I will be gone from wasting anymore time rooting for the misguided project called the Jets You guys in your 20s and 30s will be close 80 years old , no SB but still chatting it up on the GG how "next draft will be the one to go solely Offense "or how you cant wait for FA to clone another Joshy McGown" I think people here must like the cycle of underperforming high priced Vets, getting shut out never beating anyone good bottom of the barrel HCs Do I sound 49 years angry ? Champ69 is WAY closer to the truth than you guys want to know the Johnsons have got to be the worst owners in NFL history to field such a product ...triple feh
B. P. A who Needs a qb when you can get a NT/DE to rack up 1 sack for the year. PFF will be showering the jets with praise while some rookie QB is lighting the league on fire.
Thanks for the clarification. But the only one of those you mentioned who I would take ahead of one of those QBs is Barkley. He truly is a game-defining difference maker almost at the level of an elite QB IMO. Whatever impact the best edge rusher could have could likely be gotten with their 2nd or 3rd pick. But for the record, I would still hope they grab a QB with their 1st pick if they think he can be their FQB. For instance, a guy like Stidham might well be there, and I think he's very close to Rosen in ability (and maybe more durable in the long run). If Barkley and Stidham were there, it wold be a tough choice for me.
