Yeah, standing has nothing to do with it. Yesterday wasn't a big crowd, but it was plenty loud and it was an exciting game. Glad I was there!
Attendance is an issue all throughout the league. This is a major issue. Tons of empties in Dallas, Miami, Cincinnati, Chicago, LA, Baltimore. This is not just confined to MetLife during Jets games. The league is having a crisis with fan disengagement.
I've been to most every game since the 1980 season and this is by far the worst year for attendance period... the place is about half full, if that.
Been a season ticket holder since 1997. The best and most consistently good part of a Jets game for me is our tailgate! I tried to pass on buying the season this year but the Jets said you will loose the PSL you paid. If I could get out of them without loosing the $ I would. However, I would continue to buy a "Parking Pass" to be with my Tail Gate crew!
I disagree, even with a good team people won't show up. The fanbase has been burned and there's no coming back short of a complete re-invention of the gameday experience. It started with the PSL fiasco and the raising prices. Then the new place opened and it SUCKED. One of the worst stadiums in the NFL with no attention paid to the general fan and all attention to "exclusive" clubs & amenities. Face values are probably twice the market value making the PSL completely worthless. There is considerable bitterness towards Jets management and all the good will was destroyed just like they burned through their waiting list.
Yeah I don't think standing the whole game is typical, but I have seen it at Foxboro in New England I personally HATE standing to watch the game, if I wanted to stand I would have bought SRO Yeah it's going to hurt team owners eventually. Teams like the Yankees are screwing themselves by cutting off young fans from field access and over pricing everything. But if you're a fan you have nothing to worry about, who gives a fuck if owners and players take a 50% cut in revenue because the next generation ignores them. Not my money, I have zero sympathy
MHO is fathers in the 35/50 year range are so tired of seeing a losing team year after year going all the back to Jan 12,1969 so they have found other interests for the family other then a live FB game that may come with far less hassle then getting to ML. Fans in CT/ S. NJ/ Upstate NY also now have the option of the Sunday tix so they rather be a couch potato then hassling to get to ML.
The new stadium isn't nearly as loud as the old one, I don't know what they did to change the acoustics but it's no where near what Giants Stadium was like when it was rocking. I read somewhere that because the new stadium doesn't have as much covered seating the sound just exits upward and doesn't reverb back like it did off the covered seating in the old stadium.
Also depends where you sit. If your dad or employer is handing you lower bowl seats what is there to complain about besides a loss? On the other hand, if you're sitting in the upper deck and can't see a thing, sitting next to confused tourists every game, paying double market for your tickets and getting nothing back for your other games, it's a really shitty situation compared to what it used to be
As much as I dislike the stadium, I don't think the Jets have "a problem there", or at least one that can be fixed in the next 30 years by moving. The problems are in other circumstances, such as Jets fans aggressively trying to attend games. I also think it will be plenty loud when there's something more to be loud about, and 75,000 or more Jets fans are in the seats.
You want to see a fan problem? Watch the upcoming Cowboys/Giants and Eagles/Giants games at Metlife. There will be maybe 40,000-50,000 of each fan base in that building. It's going to look awful for the lordly, elite Giants and they deserve every bit of it.
There's not that many cowboys fans here or that will travel to NYC, their bark is bigger than their bite Philadelphia, on the other hand, is going to be an Epic away home game
Will have to disagree with you on the first point. There are a ton of Cowboys (and Steelers) fans in this area since both NY teams were a mess in the 70s a bunch of disloyal NYers jumped on those bandwagons because it was easy. The im the early 90s with Troy/Emmitt/Irvin you had the 2nd wave as the Jets/Giants were at times awful, at best mediocre from 1992-1997. A lot of the ticket sales for the Giants Cowboys games online are coming from Texas zip codes. They make holidays of it to see NY at Xmas time and then go to the game. Add that to the Cowboy fans already here and it will be overwhelming
