Other issues are present such as the Giants if they sit at 3 and wanna pull a Bears type deal and move up 1 or 2 pics well that may be more attractive to a team at 1 or 2..to only drop down to 3 still get a top 3 talent and acquire some good pics.
Well, with Chip Kelly going to UCLA could Rosen stay in college? Lot of positives to that. High power offense with a better recruiting class.
I'm on the fence with trading up. It will cost at least 2 firsts and a 2nd. Plus they are not that good to be one player away. The offensive line is garbage and we have no cornerbacks at even the CFL level. Plus the biggest question is who will be making that pick and for what coach.
It's a possibility, especially if the Browns hold the first pick...I suggested this same scenario the other day.
Well the last part of your post I agree with, but as to not being one player away? I agree that 1 player, even an elite rookie QB, won't take them to the SB, but imagine if they had a Watson who stayed healthy playing for them this season? They would be right in the thick of things easily. And they would only get better, quickly becoming contenders in a year or two at most. I'd settle for that.
He was sitting right there and Macc wussed out. That should be a fireable offense. I have zero faith in Macc at this point. One of those back to back safeties could have been a cornerback. I would say Macc does just enough to be lousy but really he does alot to be lousy.
I still would've preferred Mahomes, and yes, he would've made a lot of mistakes, but DAMN! he would've been exciting, and given us something to look forward to! Instead we get to "look forward" to seeing a washed up 38 year old continuing to be poor to mediocre, and lessening out chances for a top 3 pick. Being a Jets fan means living in a special kind of purgatory.
Actually, he didn't trade for Manning. He signed him as a FA. But that seems to be the extent of his ability to find a Franchise QB.
I guess I'm confused. You don't think most GMs realize that a FQB is valuable? And even if he is smarter than most GMs and knows the value of a FQB, his ability to identify one seems to be lacking. Again, he did sign Manning. But besides hitting on one FA, his work in the QB area is pretty weak.
I guess it hinges on what "valuable" means. In the sense that I mean it, Elway knows that his team isn't going to win a SB without one. As opposed to say Macc who apparently thinks - based on what we've seen so far - that while a FQB is nice to have, it isn't necessary. And yeah, I'm surprised that Elway hasn't been able to identify a FQB in the college ranks. Maybe it's like Ted Williams trying to be a good manager - he just couldn't understand why everyone couldn't hit like he could; he had no ability to identify weaknesses and help players improve them. Elway was such a natural talent that maybe he himself can't understand what makes a QB great or mediocre.
I just don't understand Elway. You would think of all people, he would know how important it is to have a FQB. But he just doesn't seem to invest much into one or pick the right ones. It's just bizarre that he has trotted out the QB's he has since he's been the GM. Except for being able to sign Manning, he's 0 for everything. He had an all-world defense and thought he could get away with Siemian, Sanchez and Lynch last year and Siemian, Osweiler and Lynch this year. I think you might be right with the Williams comparison. Maybe he thinks anyone with athleticism and a big arm can be a QB. It's easy. Just run the plays and throw to the right guy. What's so hard? The Bronco's and Jets might have the worst QB situation in the NFL right now.
You've made me reconsider my original POV about Elway knowing the value of QBs. With the exception of Manning - and in recalling how that signing came about, I think it was more Manning approaching the Broncos than Elway recruiting him - he hasn't found any true FQBs. "Ted Williams Syndrome" seems to fit. But I still hold the opinion that from what I've seen from Macc, he hasn't shown an ability or urgency to address what to me is the #1 critical hole on the Jets: QB. If he doesn't address that this off season then he needs to be fired.
How many SBs has Denver been in vs the NY Jets?????? Who cares if Mr Stanford shits the bed for them We need Mac to be Mensa smart and get this FQB done...if not I am done as a fan
I think you're the one other person who's touched on the 'x' factor that Darnold brings to the table. As for any "teammates hate him" rumors surrounding Rosen, while I think it would be unfair to Rosen to place much stock in that, I would point out Rosen's won-loss record and his inability to stay on the field - guy appears brittle when looking at the number of games he's missed. Darnold? Guy's proven that even when he's not bringing his 'A' game that he's still capable of pulling out a clutch win (see: Utah). Case in point: Josh lights up the USC secondary (TGG swoons in unison "oh my god!!" ) but lost in the sauce are two critical turnovers by Rosen and when the clock hits 0:00, lo and behold it's Darnold who emerges the winner. USC the better team than UCLA? Ok, but at the same time, the (fairly impressive) UCLA talent level that was on display vs. USC sure as hell hasn't reflected in their W-L record in recent (Josh-at-the-helm) years. Correct me if I'm wrong but NFL scouts and execs put a premium on guys who show an ability to win games. Take Montana: the ice bowl game down in Dallas vs. the Houston Cougars. Take Brady: when he wasn't bailing out Michigan HC Lloyd Carr (who loved Drew Henson), he was rallying Michigan back from a 28-14 deficit vs. 'Bama in the Orange Bowl in a game that Michigan ended up winning by a point ('Bama's kicker bricked a PAT). The point is, there's something about 'winners' and that 'x' factor they seem to bring to the table, esp. when the proverbial going-gets-tough. jm2cts. .
Except Rosen played behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football, which consistently led to one of the worst rushing teams in college football, not to mention the constant pressure he was under. Sure, Brett Hundley, who is far more mobile, could win games with his legs, but to even attempt to argue that the Bruins win-loss record is an indictment of Rosen is as ignorant an awareness of UCLA football that could be presented. I would think Jets fans would be understand how a terrible offensive line can sink a team, but apparently I was wrong.
They're 2 very different style QB's despite the two team's close proximity & the media throw down thats been created going back to the summer. While different styles w. different pro's and con's they are very similar level prospects in my opinion. Rosen Pro's: -Elite movement on dropbacks - extremely quick release - Great ball placement via multiple arm angles - Makes every throw w. devastating capabilities over the top - Plays tough & w. swagger - Questionable surrounding cast/OL have led to him carrying the team & doing more w. less Con's - Takes alot of hits -Week to week medical history -Too brittle? - Some careless turnovers - Does the swagger come at a price of questionable character & leadership Further research needed: - Do his teammates really hate him? If so..why? Follow up- Can he be well liked,a field general & the face of the franchise in green? - Does he look Brittle at his combine weigh in? does he have the frame & structure to add some padding to the equation? Follow up- Does the team's medical show any pattern of past injuries or future injuries or future surgeries. Bone density test would be smart as well. - Talk out some of those bad TO's at UCLA...Get him on the white board & see what type of "Ball security IQ" the guy possess. Darnold PRO'S - Prototype size & elite movement - Has a 6th sense relating to pocket presence - Has a good feel for Anticipatory throws - Can make every throw - He's been a winner CON'S - Mechanically Eratic footwork & movement in pocket - Rarely asked to throw guys open or into a window given elite surrounding cast - Not likely a day 1 fit in any system; an offense will absolutely need to be catered to him - Never heard anyone metion his leadership ability & he often comes across as pretty snide in interviews Further research needed: - Can he throw guys open & into windows during his pre draft work outs? - Can his pocket movement be somewhat refined for consistency? - What type of system would he like to work in...and do the Jets have the infrastructure to facilitate? - Is he a leader on & off the field? Most importantly will he play for the Jets?
Character wise.... I like Darnold better, he says all the right things and does the right things. He tends to play hero ball though. He can get caught out there and make bad throws. Rosen is more like every entitled jock you've ever heard about. Even had a Jacuzzi installed in his dorm. But he can make ALL the throws. Also one of those QB's who can spark a comeback just by his own heroics. Both are probably going to go 1 and 2.
The Jets can scout them all they want but they won't get either. Gaggy has no idea how to make a deal and neither will fall to them.
Well, we had to win at least 4 games to make sure Bowles kept his job which seems a lock now. We have McCown so there's really no need to draft a QB in the first round since there's so much 2nd tier talent available later in the draft. Given our sterling record of 2nd round picks and below, I have every confidence that Macc will continue his BPA draft methodology no matter which side of the ball it falls (usually on defense). That should keep Toddy happy at least for 2018 and we all know how important that is.. Looking forward to more of the same in 2018. Why? Cause you can never have enough Geezer of course.
