Actually, the Pats tried to sign Jimmy to a long-term contract... they'd been working on it for a while. In the end, though, Jimmy wanted the one thing they wouldn't give him right now... playing time.

Weird as hell... went from maybe the deepest QB roster in the league... to Brady and... Hoyer? LOL

  2. I see it as counterproductive to the rebuild & real change. Its just another Neil O’donnell Or even Brett Favre.

Fir the record I like Cousins.Im an MSU fan & he brought us a lot of joy.I just don’t see him as a suitable alternative to a franchise caliber QB prospect or the right fit for where this team is supposively going.I see him as a stop gap for the type of team we are.

Where's the trade for Cousins talk coming from? He's a pending FA, and nobody expects him to be franchise tagged for a 3rd consecutive year at roughly $35mil.

The question, do you blow a ton of cap to sign a guy like Cousins & stabilize the position for 5-6 years with a solid starter, or do you keep the cap space & trade multiple picks to swap spots with SF to land a young QB of the future?

  4. Is Cousins as good as any of those QBs you mentioned w the exception of Smith? Does he raise the level of play of those around him?Can he beat any of those guys head to head?thats Before we even get into deteriorated talent due to age..if the answer to my questions is “No” he doesn’t take over games, doesn’t raise the level of play or match wits w the elite why is he even being discussed?

Are we really satisfied w mediocrity?Would we rather shoot for 9-7 just to avoid the possibility of draft day failure??

Not all 31 teams need one of the top 3 qbs in the draft and could now move up and get him

I think they have snapped up a good, potentially even better qb for a round 2 pick, leaving themselves open to selecting that top RB Barkley giving themselves two weapons, just can't see anything bad about that trade at all, taking into account he doesn't flop of course but that is always the risk with any draft or trade.

The 49ers are going to sign a QB who has played only 6 quarters of NFL football to a $20 million + contract and people think signing Cousins is too risky

It's risky given Garapolo's inexperience. If they get this wrong, especially if the rumors are true that they are going to try to lock him up to an extension soon so as to avoid any situation where Garapolo leaves in free agency. It's risky because if it doesn't pan out then it will bury Lynch.

I will say though that it does open the possibility for 49ers to get Barkley or trade away the pick for even more draft capital.

A good 6 quarters though lol

Seriously though what money would a number 1QB pick be in the draft, I would suggest it would be the same if not more and at the very least they have had a sneak preview of how he can play.

Cousins has shown good and bad and he is likely to command a shit load more than 20m a year or at least he will be asking for more, 2 seasons lost due to being tagged he will want to make the big money back up asap and I don't blame him but I also don't really want him in the Jets tbh.

I said it felt like a good trade I didn't say it was risk free lol
Big money deals are always risky, look at our own dealings with revis and wilks hardly got our monies worth out of them yet and one of them has been kicked and I think the other will before next season.

I'm sure the Redskins miss those draft picks that they used to get RG3. Before the Rams HC change this year, I'm sure they were looking at those draft picks wishing they had them all back as well.

Like I said earlier, signing Cousins doesn't stunt or hurt any single players growth on this roster. We don't need to go all out and spend money on these veterans - just one. The Jets are already the youngest team in the league and are competing in every single game so far. Add another year of experience to all of the young players we currently have and start an NFL Caliber QB and you might have something.

I assume the 49ers made the deal, because they prefer to sell the a top 2 pick for a King's ransom. They figure they'll recoup the 2nd rounder and a lot more in a trade down. This is a great deal for the Jets, because it opens up a trade partner in the top 2 picks, and likely removes a Cousins suitor.

I'm fine breaking the bank either way. Use a ton of cap, and sign a solid starting QB (Cousins) who will stabilize position for 5-6 years. He won't be an elite QB, but he also won't be the weak link on a team. Otherwise, preserve the cap space, offer multiple picks to move up & get the QB of the future. We just can't exit the draft & FA not having secured at least a medium-term solution at QB.

While I'd prefer the younger QB, we also can't keep rolling over cap space in perpetuity, so the drafted QB needs to be capable of a quick learning curve.

It's a very good six quarters... I'd be more nervous that he only played six quarters before getting injured for two games. But I really liked the guy. Sorry to see him go... at least it's 3000 miles away to the NFC.

  14. We have all these young players..why would we wanna surround them w a 31 year old QBwho isn’t capable of taking over games or making those around him better? Redskins have had a young team around Cousins for awhile now..why aren’t they clamoring to lock him up?

The only reasoning I can see is simply not using the aforementioned draft picks. So in other words we’d rather sacrifice some ability at QB in order to save draft collateral. But isn’t finding a QB who can take over games the number one necessiy of building a winning team?We can have all the high draft picks in the world but if we don’t have the franchise QB we still aren’t winning. So what good are all those draft picks?

Sure he wants to play but $ trumps all in this league. He was not going to sign for back up money when starting salary was guaranteed in 18 . He would have been highly sought after and may still be. It will be interesting to see if San Fran looks to lock him up long term or not. NE screwed up in the off season. Should have taken the first round pick the Browns offered.
Crazy they have no back up. Now they will be forced to overpay Boyer or in a trade.

Please re-read your first sentence. Do you see what you're saying? The goal isn't to "play it safe" and take a limited player (even in terms of age) where you'll know what you have in him. If that's your goal as a GM, you should be fired and never get another job. Your job as GM is to shoot for the moon, to aspire to greatness, to build a team with tons of potential, to add players with high ceilings, especially at the critical positions, not players with high floors and low-to-moderate ceilings. That's a coward's approach, and/or one who is satisfied with being mediocre.

Using that approach, and even being wildly optimistic about the luck/success the Jets will have in the next two offseasons filling holes, fixing the OL, getting a stud pass rusher, adding playmakers, getting a dangerous return man, etc., that would give the Jets about a 3-year window with Cousins, if that. Just as there are no guarantees with a young QB, there is no guarantee that just because Brady and other QBs have played very well into their mid-to-late 30s if not 40s, doesn't guarantee that Cousins will. One would be rolling the dice there just as one would on a younger QB.

The other thing that adding Cousins might do is to hamper their being able to get the other players they need in the draft, because he would have the team winning a few extra games every season, and have them in worse draft position. I'm strongly and totally of the mindset that when one has a bad team with a lot of holes, that one shouldn't bring in an older vet that is going to "artificially" make them win more games than they "should" and hamper their draft position while rebuilding the team. With the way the Jets are playing now or probably would be with Petty or Hack at QB, they would be in a reasonable position to get a young FQB in the draft, if neither developed into their FQB. If Mac does a great job filling the rest of the holes and building the team over the next couple of seasons, Cousins could lift their W-L record too high for the Jets to be able to get a great young QB prospect in the draft without trading multiple high picks. That won't help build sustained success. It might lead to one or two years of glory, but then the Jets would be right back where they were, looking for a QB, but the rest of their team would be so good, they'd never be within reach of one of the top QB prospects without having to trade a slew of high picks, and would again have to resort to signing jags or hoping to get lucky with a QB taken lower in the 1st round or in a lower round. I'm fed up with that crap. I want the Jets to have a topflight QB for a change.

Maybe you'd be satisfied with that approach, but I wouldn't. I won't a team built that can have sustained success over a long period of time. That only happens when you draft your QB and build your team around him.

Hoyer will go there for cheap as he ripped off the 49ers for 10 million dollars and was cut by them. I agree though that if Brady goes down (very unlikely) the Pats are screwed. There was rumor going around that Belichek wouldn't deal Garapolo to the Browns out of spite from his time there. I don't buy that but Belichek is an asshole so its entirely possible.

San Fran will try their best to lock up Garapolo long term because if they don't and he hits FA it means they would have essentially used a 2nd round pick to rent Garapolo for half a season. I think they're going all in with Garapolo and will either trade out of their pick to get more draft capital or pick up Saquon Barkley because they are also interested in moving on from Carlos Hyde.

So if the Jets have the 6th pick in the draft and we have to give up 3 first rounders to jump up to 1st, you're pulling the trigger? Mind you, none of the Qb prospects are as touted as say an Andrew Luck. Cousins is not elite, but he's good enough where if you put enough weapons around him you can be a good team. I get the point that that's essentially hampering yourself but its a huge gamble to take and the Jets cannot afford to whiff on a first round pick QB that you trade 3 1st rounders for.

Also, we have 80+ mil in cap with no player on the roster making anything serious. We are financially very able to take on Cousins contract and also go ahead and sign other players to address other holes.

You cannot think about worse draft position if you're trying to win games. How many times are we going to draft in the top 10 before we finally realize that unless you're drafting well it doesn't mean anything.

I get the high risk high reward approach of drafting a QB, I think Rosen can be very good, but I also don't think Jets will be in position to draft him and if they are they should. Jets cannot keep on going through this cycle of getting old QB's to fill the position. Regardless of which approach they take, signing cousins, drafting rosen, or getting some other QB in the draft of free agency, the jets cannot continue to ignore the fact that we need a franchise QB.

The Skins have had a young team around him but that doesn’t mean they’ve been any good. He wins despite needing to score 24+ a game. He doesn’t win because the rest of their roster is any good. The jets roster is head and shoulders better than the redskins right now. The only difference is they have a legit QB behind center.

Cousins isn’t a guy like Cam who uses his athletic ability to move the ball. He reads defenses and makes accurate throws. QBs like that can play into their late 30s. He had the 3rd highest passer rating on a shitty team.

The Skins defense is much better.
