what if he called the run and lynch fumbled? how many people would say you have an all star mobile QB why not throw it in with the option for him to take off and use his legs? kinda see how that works. everyone has a different perspective

The only thing that the "prevent defense" does is prevent your team from winning. When you stop playing aggressively, and sag back, allowing the other team to take yardage easily that they had to fight hard for before, it sends a message to your players and they subconsciously back off. I despise the "prevent defense".

Good post. Bowles is being more aggressive this year for sure. I appreciate it. I'd rather go down swinging anyway and like you said it is actually working. Doug Moron in the JAX game pussing out and punting in overtime gave us a victory.

Lots of critics of the decision to try and score before halftime against NE. And I get not wanting to give the ball back to Brady. But Bowles didn't give the ball back to Brady, McClown did with his awful interception. We had the ball on their side of the field, we absolutely should be thinking points. I'm not gonna kill him over that

I do as well, and totally agree. If I never see the Jets employ it again, it will be too soon.

In general, there are only two things that can go wrong on a handoff. The exchange from the QB to RB can be mishandled and the RB can fumble. On a pass play, the QB can be sacked, hurried into an incompletion, the ball can slip out of his hand or be knocked out by a pass rusher, the pass can be knocked down at the LOS, it can sail too high or too wide or be short, the receiver can drop the ball, or fumble it when hit, or the ball can be intercepted or knocked down by the DB. The odds of something going awry on a pass play in general are much higher than on a rushing play. The only way that changes significantly is if the RB has a serious history of fumbling the ball and the QB is a sure fire HOFer and he has a tall WR like Calvin Joseph.

Now let's look at specific stats. How many times had Beastmode fumbled or failed in that game, season and his career? I'll tell you. In 111 carries in the 2015 season, Lynch had not fumbled a single time. In 2,214 career carries, he has fumbled only 26 times. He had already rushed for 102 yards in the game on only 24 carries and had scored once already.

Wilson was only 12 for 21 in that game. His receivers were Chris Matthews, Ricardo Lockette, Jermaine Kearse, Doug Baldwin, and Bryan Walters. All are or were good receivers, but not one great one that was Mr. Clutch. The 2014 season was not one of Wilson's best. His QB rating was only 95.0, whereas in his previous two seasons, it had been 100.0 and 101.2. His completion percentage was 63.1, the same as the season before, whereas in his rookie season it was 64%. Not a huge difference, but still less. He had thrown only 20 TDs against 7 interceptions that season. He had fumbled 11 times that season.

In short, I don't see how anyone who has any amount of knowledge about the players and the game situation could even remotely suggest that putting the ball in Wilson's hands was a good or as safe an option as giving the ball to Beast Mode.

Yes, people have different perspectives, but that doesn't mean that everyone's perspective is accurate or correct. Too often people think their opinion is enough to make their perspective valid, and it isn't. Too often their opinion is based on nothing, or on a faulty memory. Accurate facts and statistics need to be take into consideration. People come up with all kinds of crazy opinions on things that have absolutely no basis in fact, history, statistics, odds or anything else, except what they want to believe or think. They are still entitled to their opinions, but that doesn't mean that others who are more knowledgeable will take those opinions seriously.

  7. The prevent should be used only in "Hail Mary" type situations. Defensive coaches like to try & get fancy & use umbrella type coverages to avoid plays over the top & tackle ball carriers in bounds to run out the clock. Unless it's a One score game on your side of the field w 20 seconds or less left in the game worrying about the clock is silly.Stop the offense & get the ball back.

Yep, MM is concerned about his resume so yes in that respect he DOES care...does he think this will be a long term commitment to the NY Jets ??? My guess is no considering the personnel like Parcells Pete Carroll etc who hang their hat at Jets drive and then go on to a better organization...it's a pattern imo

But TBH he is Average at best in the 3 years he has learned as a rookie GM...lately he has done very well getting Kearse Ealy others....so don't get me wrong I like MM much more than TB but he is NOT all world ....You continue to homer for Mac and that's your business/opinion

If you don't respect the Media that's OK ....I happen to evaluate them differently in their insights which a lot of times is the TRUTH e.g. Bowles performance as a game manager and the questions they have

Also, the passion of a fan can NEVER be compared to Management ...so yes the fans do care ALOT more esp with no playoffs and of course no SB

If it sounds like I don't trust The Johnstons MM and of course our genius Coach you are probably correct...look at the record

Millions are spent on D with poor to fair results , after J McGown shoots his wad with us what direction do we go in at say 7-9 or 9-7...?????? I don't really see a long term plan here

No. It would have still be the right call to hand off to Lynch. Having Russell Wilson roll out and run it in would have been an infinitely better decision than calling for a slant, especially when that WR had 17 career catches going into the game. A play action pass would have also worked.

So, no, that's not how that works. A bad play call that works is just that. A bad play call that doesn't work is inexcusable.

I'm agreeing a run is the obvious call, but we've also seen so many easy TDs on offenses faking the run and sliding a FB or TE out in the end zone uncovered as well. I'm willing to bet anything that lynch gets in with 4 tries starting at the 1 but still i'm saying that other people can see it a different way. There is not always a right or wrong call, it's how each person sees it.

I'm not homering for Mac. I have pointed out the moves that I think he made that were bad or that I haven't liked, and the mistakes that I think he has made. I have simply tried to maintain some balance in this forum where the majority of posters have been ready to criticize, if not fire him since his rookie season.

As far as Mac not really caring about the Jets and looking to move on to another organization, I'm sorry, but that makes little sense. He's a GM here. If he's fired, he doesn't get a 2nd chance with another team. He may get a job with another team as head of college scouting or pro personnel, but those jobs would be demotions with less pay. The Jets were the team that gave him the opportunity to become a GM and make a name for himself. The only reason he possibly wouldn't want to succeed and stay here is that if Woody has just driven him crazy and he can't stand working in such a dysfunctional environment any more. Even then, he'd do his damnedest to succeed so he could then quit, and then would probably get another GM job.

ALL GMs start out as rookies. There have been very few instances of GMs changing teams or of fired GMs getting hired by other teams. No rookie is going to be "all world" out of the gate. That's not realistic at all. With the draft being a crapshoot and even the best GMs missing on picks and making mistakes, the best that one can hope for is average or above average and that he'll learn from his mistakes and get better with each successive year. Even so, you know he's going to continue to make mistakes.

We will have to agree to disagree regarding the media, because I have almost zero respect for any of those clowns. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, so just because one of those tools occasionally is right about something, means nothing imo.

I don't trust the Johnsons or Bowles. You should know that by my posts.

I liked Westhoff a lot, but he had his flaws or drawbacks. One was his health. Another was his age. Another was that he didn't know how to help his kickers. I remember reading an article or two back when he was with the team, and he couldn't help the Jets FG kicker. The kicker had to go outside to get help with his fundamentals. That's pretty piss poor for a STs coach imo. He had the feisty part down, but I don't know how much he would know about offense, developing young QBs, or how conservative he might have been.

honestly with all the rules changes for safety on kickoffs, not much westhoff could contribute to an NFL team right now

I think we'll just have to agree to to disagree, I've just looked at it again just to be sure and ill give u bottom 5, along with San Fran, Chicago, Indy and Cleveland. But every other team to me is better and a large part of that has to do with the most important position in sports Quarterback. This actually has been my only real issue with Mac, he chose Hack and I'm not gonna scream about him passing over Prescott or Brissett because i didnt do it then but that night my heart sank when we picked him. I knew he'd be a complete waste of time to develop and we would straight up wasted a draft pick a 2nd rounder at that.

Im a huge NFL fan in general and way more than personally anybody i know and can go through names of numerous players all around the league. Im die hard when it comes to the NFL and find that professional football to be easily the most entertaining thing in sports. When draft time comes i dig deep and research prospects because I'm probably invested in this team too much to a fault. I pray that one day that we bring a championship here and nothing in life (that i have no control of) would make me happier. This team talent wise isn't that good and I'm specifically pointing to the offense. But i have to give Morton credit because its looked way better than i thought it would. The defense is good but idk how u can give only give Mac credit when Bowles is the one doing the actual coaching.

I can point to one player who has looked tremendous thus far, in Demario Davis. He frankly looked like shit his last years here and then in Cleveland continued to look like the same player, he comes here and wala the guys is making play after play after play. How does Bowles not get credit for that?? Ealy was not let go once but TWICE by very good teams in Carolina and New England, another player making plays what Bowles doesnt get credit for that too. Mo Claiborne was let go by Dallas and they needed CBs just as much as we did, another guy playing amazing for what we paid for him. Adams and Maye look like they're gonna be with us for the next decade and Lee slowly is improving week by week. Ryan Shazier Pittsburgh ILB who is often compared to Lee is finally playing well in his 3rd year and is earning his draft selection and some Steelers fans felt the same way some do about Lee and called him a bust too a year ago. Bass and Brooks are guys most have never heard of and they come here and are immediately contributed don't u think that has to do with coaching??. I just think its funny, like hilarious even that ONLY Mac gets credit but none goes to Bowles like come on now that makes no sense. He's not perfect I'm not saying he is but give the man credit for when its due, He's the main reason for this team playing well.

He and Mac were put in a situation that I'm sure if u ask them wasn't favorable and mainly for Bowles, they come in and immediately we sign veteran after veteran (Revis, Marshall, Fitz, Cromartie, Skrine, Gilchrist, Carpenter). With all the money in the world thanks to Idzik, sorry it wasn't hard for Mac to look great so he won GM of the year. But all those guys were available for a reason, we win 10 games and immediately expectations skyrocket. But we saw last year that this team was flawed and the rebuild that should have started years ago is finally taking place. This isn't me not appreciating Mac because i do think he's good at his job, i just really want the Mac is good Bowles is bad narrative to be done with but its infuriating .

Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL period has been a head coach since 1999 and even till this day is criticized for his clock management, these guys aren't perfect and theres a lot more to it than we'll ever know.

There must be more to it as you say, but I can't imagine what. In a time-limited game, the most valuable commodity is time, therefore time outs should be treated as gold. Too often I see them burned for no real good reason. In comparison to losing a "piece of gold", what's losing 5 yards, or executing a play that you realize probably won't work (but it might)? Time outs should be saved for the most critical parts of the game, preferably the last couple of minutes of each half. Calling a T.O, in the 1st qtr. should never happen.Whatever you're trying to avoid/prevent by burning that T.O. simply can't be worth it.

We may just have to agree to disagree, and that will be fine. No one said that we had to agree.

I do want to respond to a couple of your points or responses.

I think bottom 5 roster is fairer and may be pretty accurate, but remember, a lot of that is because the Jets have so many young players that are unknowns. By the end of this season, you and others may think that the Jets' talent level is a good bit higher than you do now, or could even think the Jets have the worst talent in the league.

In terms of Mac and Bowles, I'm not only giving Mac credit. I've given kudos to Bowles this year on how he has the team prepared to play, playing hard and tough each of the last 4 weeks. I've given credit to his creativity playing 3 safeties in one game, and playing Lee outside in another. He has improved in some ways. I've even said in a post or two that if the team continues to play this way the rest of the season, I might change my mind and want Bowles back as HC. I've also said that at least in terms of continuity, stability and keeping Morton and Bates around, it would be better if Bowles fixed his flaws and was extended.

I still don't like his conservative, passive approach, but he has shown at least some signs of possibly improving there, so I will continue to watch that. I don't like that the Jets went so conservative last week vs the Pats after we went up 14-0, but I don't know if that Morton or Bowles. I truly don't like the way he gave Petty the short shrift in the sham of a QB competition, and am not sure if is the right HC to develop a young QB, or if he'd even give one a chance since he seems to favor vets so much and only seems to think of the short term.

As far as Ealy is concerned, Bowles gets no kudos for his development. Carolina traded him because the Pats had interest, the Panthers had a lot of DL depth, wanted to use the draft pick to address some other needs, and there may be some other behind the scenes reason, but it wasn't because he couldn't play or wasn't developed. You do know that he had two sacks in the SB don't you? Who knows why the idiotic Pats dumped him so abruptly.

Similarly, Davis was playing better last year in Cleveland, and stated in articles when he first signed here that he had learned a lot the last couple of years. Don't forget that Mac had more competition at each position in TC this year, and that is behind a lot of the players improvement or development. They were pushed by other players. Bowles has nothing to do with Davis' play this year unless it's through some exotic blitzes or uses of Davis. Davis is a veteran. If you or someone can show me something concrete that Bowles has done to make Davis a better player, fine, I'll believe you and give Bowles the credit his due, but I have seen/heard nothing to that extent.

Claiborne was let go by Dallas because he couldn't stay healthy, so they decided to move on rather than give him a big contract. Again, that's no credit for Bowles. Claiborne has pretty much always played well for Dallas when he was healthy.

For someone who follows other teams so much, it's funny that you try to give Bowles credit for each of those 3 players' play, when all three played well elsewhere. I understand that you just want Bowles to get the credit you think he deserves, and that's fair, but in your response, it comes across as someone who is just desperately trying to find anything possible to give Bowles credit for.

I agree that both Bowles and Mac were put in an unfavorable position their first season by our boob of an owner Woody. He had been foaming at the mouth about making the playoffs again and the Jets. When they were hired was the time to begin a true rebuild, not the "competitive rebuild" crap that was tried. I am convinced that was at Woody's orders. If not, and it was Mac's idea, then he deserves the criticism for that. Beginning the rebuild then would have put less pressure on Bowles to win immediately. The problem was that Idzik hadn't spent money, so Mac had to, and the only way to spend enough was to bring in some big ticket FAs. Woody tampered to get Revis back to try to help the abysmal secondary, so there's no way that Woody wasn't at least involved in, if not totally behind the "competitive rebuild."

I think both were put at a disadvantage having to report to Woody. Both would have been better off and probably have done a better job having a football man as team president to report to rather than that clueless twit, Woody.

so who watched Andy Reid totally fuck up the game last night in terms of managing the game ... 4 mins to go, Raiders got 2 TOs, oh let's try and run out the clock.

No dude, you get freaking first downs ... its a problem a lot of coaches have, but Bowles I like his aggressiveness and it has worked.
