Got out there today. The swell and wind were a bitch to deal with this morning. As the day went on, the wind died down but the swell didn't. Needless to say, it made Blackfishing very difficult. Slayed the Porgys since they were the only thing biting. I even managed to land a starving Fluke that hit a crab bait! 7.5lbs of Porgy Filets! [[/URL]
my brother caught his first striper from the kayak last week rt near his house.... he was pretty pumped about that
They're starting their southern migration finally. I'm hoping to get in on some before they clear out. Mother Nature hasn't been very cooperative lately. SeaBass season starts Oct. 22nd Limit of 15, length of 12.5". My time of year.
He caught a seabass inshore that day too (I told him it was lost) said NY needed to be 15" (which is a nice one for us) maybe he was wrong. He did say th water is still fairly warm, so the Stripers may be around through Nov.... go get um in your 17' Between life, hurricanes and other bullshit weather, I havent been fishing at all at least there's been plenty of surf
Trying something different this fall Stinky. Going with 20# leader instead of my regular 30#. Downsizing to a 2/0 circle hook as well on 20# leader. Not sure if fish are line shy but if they are, I'll be ready.
that will definitely help the bite ratio (especially if the water's clear) but may lose some fish..... depends on the target fish and type of fishing. I use 20# for my inshore leaders..... much heavier for bottom fishing offshore on structure though
2/0 hook may work for porgies but prob too small for most other species, esp seabass. They have some bucket mouths. I usually use 4/0..... 8/0 for the big snappers Gamakatsu when theyre on sale, otherwise Eagle Claw "Lazer Sharp" (made in 'merica) Owners are too expensive for me
No way I use 20# on Tog when that season starts Nov. 15th. I already have some 50# leaders tied and ready for the bulldogs!
Offshore Forecast for NOV (Robert Johnson / Jody Lynn Charters.... best offshore guy in the area IMO) Fall is here or at least the cold fronts with 25 to 30 knots are. It has been a long time since we had this windy of a fall. The fish must be hungry because no one has been feeding them. I expect the Fall Cobia migration to be in full swing this month. Look on any of the wrecks and larger ledges in 80 to 120 ft. Cobia can be targeted with jigs worked vertically through the water column. A live grunt fished on a drift line with a light weight is another tactic. There will be some large fish in the 40 to 60-pound class taken. Grouper should be on the feed as well stocking up for the upcoming spawn. This is heavy tackle territory with 80 # mainline and 100 # leader. Live grunts or pinfish is the bait of choice. In addition to the heavy weights there will be plenty of vermillion snapper available. As the water starts to cool Black Sea bass should also start to show. On the trolling scene if you are willing to make the trip there will be some sailfish on the bait pods in 140 to 160 ft. Slow speeds and small ballyhoo rigged on mono is the way to go. It remains to be seen if there will be a Red Snapper season this year. The SAFMC did vote to approve a limited opening but the dates have not been published yet. Hopefully by the time this reaches the stands there will be some fishing allowed. As to where and how to catch them? Just go fishing, they are everywhere. “Let’s Go Fishing” Captain Robert Johnson Jodie Lynn Charters (904)540-2628
Checked in with my Fav Capt. Sunday seabass opening will be first come basis. 6am departure but Wifey and I will be at the boat at 4:30-5am. Already got a motel room accross from the marina booked for Sat. Nite. Can't Wait!!!
Gorilla Blues are back off Jersey. Some running as big as 25lbs. I might take a shot at them in a couple of weeks.
Another great day of Fall Fishing off the Jersey Coast. Nice mix of Sea Bass and Porgies. Beautiful Sunrise this morning to start things off..
Well "The Man" allotted us 2 back to back 3 day weekends to keep a Red Snapper....... and rt on cue the forecast is 3-5+ short period with 15kt winds
Would be exciting in a kayak yes? Heading out tomorrow morning for another Belmar run. Blackfish opens in 2 weeks.
