and 6 games isn't a large enough body of work to make a legitimate evaluation of either Petty or Hack. You're absolutely right that McClown winning means nothing unless they think McClown is the long term answer. This is where the Jets always fck up. They never think long term. Always in the moment because its always 5 mins to midnight.
Maybe we can look forward to McCown playing above his head, winning some games and leaving us just short of a playoff spot. Then he can hold us up for 10 million and we can watch him crash and burn in year 2.
If we really wanted to tank Mac should have brought in a 38 yr old retread QB who hasn't won a game in years.
I feel like they're trying to catch lightning in a bottle and maybe see if they can luck their way into a wildcard race...If the bottom falls out early on we will probably see Petty/Hack sooner than later I don't agree with it, and would have went with one of the young guys from the start, but it is what it is at this point The passing game all around (WRs, McCown, and protection) has been much better than we expected so far....If the defense can continue to improve we might actually have some meaningful games coming up. I'm not gunna really sweat it at this point because it's beyond our control....I'll save my bitching for if/when McCown is still trotting out there at 2-8
BB has over 40 years of NFL experience. You never know, Bowles could eventually learn to be a great coach, hopefully soon.
Just because it didn't happen for Herm, Rex, Eric and Groh doesn't mean it won't happen for Blowes. OTOH, Herm and Rex had personalities so they could at least get a job on ESPN.
I don't care what kind of personality my HC has, as long as he commands the players' respect, develops young players, has the team disciplined and prepared to play each week, comes up with sound game plans, is able to make in-game adjustments, is more aggressive than conservative/passive, puts the best players on the field regardless of age/experience, puts the players in a position to succeed, and is a sound game and clock manager. In Rex's case, I think his personality helped the team at times, but it ultimately hurt the team and him in being a HC. Neither Rex nor Herm could learn from their mistakes, be flexible, or change. They were who they were. I think their personality was part, if not most, of the problem in that regard. I haven't liked Bowles, or seen any reason to have much, if any, hope in his developing, but this past Sunday showed that he may be capable of change, improvement and growth. After all, the team seemingly was prepared to play, they played well, the game plan seems to have been solid, and he changed up his usual defensive front and actually had Lee playing at OLB. He also had Adams playing LB, S and CB, and utilized 3 Ss. Ultimately, it would be best for the team if he can develop and become all the things in the 2nd paragraph above. The Jets would have more stability and less turmoil. That said, if he sticks with playing McCown instead of Petty, Kerley over Stewart and Hansen, and Forté over McGuire, and winning to save his job over developing the young players and determining who can help the team going forward, then the heck with how much he has grown/improved, he needs to be shown the door the second the season ends.
Agree with this. So far this season, Bowles has passed muster. Even though two are losses, the team has appeared to play disciplined aggressive football, not giving up easy points and not talking dumb penalties. That was my major beef with Bowles. As long as the Jets keep getting beat on talent alone, it will be a good reflection on Bowles.
First two games, Bowles' defense was being gashed. Against the Dolphins they looked very disciplined, prepared, and played hard. Now, I don't know how many games the Jets will have where everything is working, but these are the things Bowles will be judged on come years end. It's a long season so this will be a week to week thing and a lot can change.
Agreed. Bowles looked the same as before in the 1st two games. The game vs. Miami could have been an anomaly. It remains to be seen whether Bowles will be able to continue in the same fashion, or if it was a one-week fluke, due to perhaps our rivalry with the Dolphins and maybe Bowles having extra incentive since he was once interim HC of the Dolphins. Let's see if he reverts to form this week and has Lee back at ILB, if he continues the same front and lineups as last week, tweeks them some to adjust to what the Jags do, whether he makes any in-game adjustments if his game plan doesn't work, how disciplined, aggressive, and tough the team plays this week and how well prepared they are to play.
Game 1 was against one of the best rushers in the league. He averaged 5.5 ypc last year. Jets held him to 5.0 in the game. Not a great performance but understandable given it was game 1 and Jet offense was invisible. Game 2, the Jets played a good game for the first half against one of the top teams in the league on the road. After the fumbled punt, it all came apart, but they played well up to that point. This is a season to look for the small positives.
But how much of that is because the raiders were commuting the worst penalties? Shady is a good back but Jay Ajayi is no slouch. I think last Sunday was great and all but I have to see that consistently for me to get excited about where this team is heading. Losses don’t even define progress in my eyes because the young core can play great and we can still lose because of the deficiencies of talent on our team. I deff agree that this season is one that we have to look at positives and I think there’s a bunch, I just don’t want those positives to skew the mindset of the owner, front office, HC. One thing to note that hasn't been discussed is whether playing either petty or hack would have a negative impact on the other 10 players on the offense as the Jets attempt to implement a new offense. Everyone is learning a new playbook so the possibility exists that you want the other 10 players to know exactly where they should be every single play before turning the reins over to one of the other qb's on the roster.
This! McCown's great value to this team is to get all the other offensive players doing their jobs as well as they possibly can before throwing young Bryce or Hack in there. The faster he does it, the faster we can figure out this team's future.
Adam Gase pretty much said the Dolphins looked like an all out mess and the offense was an abomination. I think what we saw vs the Dolphins was great but consistency is key and quite honestly Bowles has been more consistently bad than good. We'll see what happens versus the Jags.
I was going to bring this up as well. I think McCown is the perfect QB to show us what we have in the other players on offense. All offseason we blamed the offensive line for every thing that went wrong with the offense under Hack. Well 3 games in with McCown, and the pass blocking has actually looked pretty good. Run blocking could be better, but I'd be interested to see how it looks this week with Powell and McGuire getting the snaps. Hackenberg could have made the OL look much worse than it was. Anderson and Kearse have both looked good, and Stewart and ASJ have shown promise. Its nice to know what these guys can be with the most vanilla QB in history. If Hackenberg comes in and the Jets cant complete a pass, I'll be much more inclined to blame Hack as opposed to the supporting cast.
1) That's a fair point about the young receivers, but the running backs share carries on most teams. Powell has never gotten a ton of carries because he has a tendency to get banged up (I distinctly remember Mac hinting at this in an interview last year). You might nitpick a bit, but I don't think the carries have been overly disproportionate one way or another. McGuire has done very well with the carries he has gotten. Also, it looks like you will get your wish this week, as Forte will likely be down. 2) You wrote "IMO it's too early to establish that winning culture since they may/probably don't have their FQB yet." As I explained, I just do not agree with that statement.
Regarding 2), that's fair. No one said that we had to agree, but I think it's more semantics. Players can be developing, learning to play the right way, and the team developing the groundwork for the "winning culture" to become winners once they get their QB and fill some of their crucial holes (like edge rusher, #1 WR, upgraded OL, ILB/MLB), but they could still lose this year because of the lack of a FQB and the holes on the team, rather than because they weren't being prepared to play or developing.
