We don't necessarily need the overall #1 pick. We do have to be in the top 6 to have a shot at a potential FQB. Looking at the teams who are 0-2 so far: (I'm lumping them all into one basket since DP isn't conference dependent) Jets Browns Bengals Colts Chargers Giants Bears Saints 49'ers Now lets take out the teams that already have an established Qb or most likely not in the market for a FQB: Colts (Luck) Giants(Manning) Chargers(Rivers) Saints(Brees) That leave 5 teams that potentially would draft Qb in the first round. Throw in the Bills with their excess of DP's and that makes 6 teams for 6 potential FQB's. I didn't factor in the 1-1 teams as they're already behind the race to the bottom. The FQB pool consists of: (As of September) Darnold Rosen Allen ------------ Jackson Falk Rudolph So, when the music stops on the 2017 season, there could be at least 1 team left out of the top 6. Now that draft spot is fluid as one of those unfortunate 6 losers may not take a QB with their first rd. pick. Point being, we don't have to go 0-16, 1-15 or 2-14. Realistically, we could go 3-13 or 4-12 and still have a shot at one of the Big-6 although our odds are much better at 3-13 than 4-12 for one of the Big-3. So, beating the Dolphins wouldn't be the worst thing in the world this Sunday. I doubt it happens but you never know. Maybe McClown will have the season of his life. Hell, Fitz parlayed that into the now infamous $6mil heist of 2016. Macc being the sucker that he's shown to be so far, would pony up more cash for a 39yo QB and take another DE/LB/CB in the first rd? Stranger things have happened.
Do not agree with this, at all. There are two QBs that separate from the rest and are up there with the best QB prospects of the last 10 years. Only team that I can even fathom passing on one of them if they are in position is the Colts, who would probably take the boatload of picks to move out of spot. I don't see any other passsing on Darnold or Rosen if they are in position for one of them. We can not screw up this opportunity again.
I don't think the 9ers take a qb if they sign cousins. Other than that, I hope we go 3-13 with a .500 record in the division
If the Chargers and Saints finish with a record bad enough to draft a franchise QB they absolutely will. Neither Rivers or Brees are going to play much longer. I wouldn't even put it past the Giants if they had a chance to get Manning's replacement. Bengals and Colts likely wouldn't, but they could trade out to someone looking for a QB.
Sorry boss, but if there's a FQB available, teams who don't need one, will trade away the pick. Also, Brees, Manning and Rivers ain't spring chickens and Luck may leave Indy for greener pastures. We need to a top 1, 2 or 3 pick.
Getting the 3 pick in a 2 QB draft would be very Jets like, my god that would be torturous. Yes I know there are others that project to be 1st rd picks but there are two that stand way above the rest.
I've been concerned about teams that have established QB's getting into the QB sweepstakes in the 2018 draft but the contracts for both Eli and Rivers are prohibitive. Drew Brees is a 38 year old QB and it will be interesting to see whether Saints opt to re-sign him to a 2-3 year contract. Luck is the wild card for me. To the colts, he literally is worth the entire salary cap. He instantly makes that team so much better and actually competitive. I find it curious how he's been out, doesn't seem like the Colts are sharing too much. It almost seems that he's been instructed to sit out till he's absolutely 100% because of the beating he's taken over the years due to the Colts piss poor o line management. Browns - Seeing as they drafted Kizer its a bit of a toss up. They have so much draft capital that I can see his rookie season being a try out for Kizer as a starter, if he fails he can be a backup. But Browns may very well use draft picks to surround Kizer with talent and hope he continues to develop. Bengals - I don't know if Dalton suddenly blows, or his offensive line is that bad. The Bengals have an aura of instability and locker room division with some D players clamoring for Kaepernick. Could easily see them losing enough games to be in the conversation for top 5 pick. But I don't think they will get rid of Dalton and would assume they'll clean house of coaches, certain players before they got rid of QB. Jaguars - Tom Coughling and Doug Marrone will be in the hunt to address the QB position in the offseason. They'll have another top 5 pick and I think they will go with QB. Colts - Depends on when Luck comes back. They were unlucky not to have pulled off the game versus the Cards. Other teams in their division aren't that great (Houston, Jags, etc.) Chargers - Could draft a QB and have him sit behind Rivers... Giants - They have too much talent on both sides of the ball to not pull off some wins (49ers, Rams, Chargers, Maybe the Bucs can all be won, and the division is such a toss up that they may be able to split with redskins, eagles, cowboys). Bears - Just drafted Trubisky. No way they go QB high again Saints - Will have to decide if they want to draft Brees replacement, or get rid of Brees entirely and fully commit to the tank. 49'ers - Could totally see Kirk Cousins signing for the 9ers, but can also see them losing enough where they do go 2-14 and get a top 3 pick.
The goal post for Jets QB's is not high. I hate to watch us lose... but there is some comfort in it, if we get the 1 pick.
need the 1 or 2 pick My opinion on these 0-2 teams Jets - I dont see a win on our schedule personally Browns - a bad but scrappy team, they dont seem as bad as usual and i can see them beating us and winning 2 other games Bengals - too much talent to have a worse record than the Jets Colts - When Luck plays he will grab them a few wins later in the season and the division is so bad they will be in the hunt Chargers - a good team with a horrible kicker, could be 2-0 right now Giants - I'm not worried about Jerry Reese picking a QB Bears - Just drafted Trubisky Saints - Brees will get them more wins than us and I can see them going for stud D player since their D is ATROCIOUS 49'ers - Will draft a QB So as I see it, the desperate teams that look bad this year, are really between us and SF, and while the Jets will undoubtedly choose the wrong QB, I'd rather have the 1 pick and have our destiny in our own hands, and not 'hope" the right guy falls to us.
Just looked that the 49ers schedule - They play the rams twice, the colts, bears, texans, jags. These are all games where things can go either way IMO
interesting, but it ignores the possibility of teams drafting a sucessor to heir qb, a possible trade out ( luck) of their current team, and possible trade down for one of those teams to get more picks. the team trading up could then grab a guy you had targeted. then, there is always the history of the jets drafting the wrong guy at whatever spot they have: remember gholston and hundreds before him? we have not exactly killed the draft since then, either. and, all this assumes those top 2 o 3 qbs elect to come out for the draft instead of staying in school. i still think one of them will pull an eli manning and flatly state that he will not sign with a certain team(s).
This draft, to me at least, comes down to do you get a top 3 pick, and which QB to you like more. Jets have games versus the Chargers, Saints, Bills, Browns, Jags. These games will ultimately decide whether we will be in a position to draft high enough. I can't see us beating the high powered offenses of the chargers (week 16), Saints (week 15) when Petty or Hack will be playing. Games versus the Bills at Metlife, Jags and Browns will be interesting. Browns are scrappy, could see Jets or Browns winning by a 3-7 points. Jags don't want Bortles, but will their defense and Leonard Fournette be able to carry the team. Bills have Shady and Tyrod and we've never been able to successfully bottle up either of them. If both are healthy, I'd expect a similar result to that of week 1
true, as far as Jets wins go, I dont really feel good about ANY team we play (which i guess is good for darft position) The only game i see that would even be as good as 50/50 odds is the Browns, but i still feel they have more talent and play harder than us
It really depends. Jets were competitive with the Raiders for a half, competitive with the Bills for about 2-3 quarters and then things break down, mistakes happen and the Jets fold like a cheap lawn chair. I think ultimately Jets will have a very hard time winning any game because we simply do not have the talent nor coaching to really make the Jets last all 4 quarters. I hate to say it but I would prefer we didn't win at all so as to make sure we have our selection at #1 and not have to worry about other teams.
i agree, it sucks but think about some of the other FQB in our division, Marino, Brady, Bledsoe, Kelly....who have we had? Namath? The HOFer with more INTs than TDs, how very Jets gotta do something about it now, enough is enough
I disagree, Cman. Finishing with a top 6 draft pick may seemingly guarantee the Jets A QB, but not necessarily a FQB, and not necessarily the right one for the Jets. At this point, I have zero interest in Falk, little interest in Allen, and am kind of meh on Jackson. Just getting a QB in the draft doesn't mean squat. Lots of QBs bust. Some QBs don't have the arm to play in the NE in the winter. Some don't have the right mental makeup to play in the glare of the bright lights of NYC and/or handle the pressure. I think that in order to have a realistic chance to get a FQB, the Jets must finish in the top 2-3 at a minimum, and to have their choice and best chance at getting the right QB, I think the Jets must get the #1 pick. Further, I think it would take going 0-16 to wake Woody Johnson up and force him to face the reality that he needs to hire a top football man to run the team and quit meddling, and that Bowles must go. In addition, if nothing else, Woody and Bowles both deserve the humiliation and shame of going 0-16. Both are proud, arrogant, clueless dumbasses. I would love to see them both brought low and receive the public humiliation they deserve. They've made Jets fans suffer, and I want those bastards to suffer.
We need one of the top two picks...period, end of story. This QB class is good enough that teams will do whatever they need to do to pick their guy VERY high in the first round. Doomsday scenario is for the Jets to tank this year and still have no solution to QB going into next year!! IMO -the only consolation is if there were a once in a generation talent available at LT. That is such an important position and until we get a decent OL, it almost won't matter who we have behind center.
With the caveat that we've only played a few games at this point it appears that the QB's break down into 3 distinct groups. 1. The FQB's nobody argues about - Darnold and Rosen. 2. The FQB's that people have doubts about - Jackson and Allen. 3. The Spread QB's that are under the radar - Rudolph and Falk. Getting one of the two from group 1 would be vastly preferable to getting any of the QB's from the other brackets. Once those two are gone you have Jackson and 3 Spread QB's playing out of the shotgun and making a limited selection of reads on each play. I'd argue at this point that Jackson is the clearly better prospect in that group however he's also got questions about durability and whether his mobile style will translate well to the NFL. I think at this point the Jets have to be focused on getting a top 2 pick to give them one of the big guns who are already operating out of the Pro Set. If that becomes impossible due to a few wins I do not think the Jets will be able to get one of those guys. Nobody is going to trade down out of an FQB unless they already have a prime-time FQB or just drafted a young one in the last year or two. If a team fits that limited group and they do trade down it will be to one of the teams that has a lot of 2018 value to offer. Once the top two are off the market the Jets really could take any of the last 4 and get lucky but 3 of them are likely to be busts. Jackson, Allen, Rudolph and Falk really look a lot like the 2014 QB group. It's Darnold and Rosen that make this a strong QB draft not just a deep one like 2014. BTW, the Jets might have a wildcard in hand going into the 2018 draft. If Jamal Adams looks really good this year and has people buzzing the Jets might well be able to trade him and their #1 pick for a top 2 pick if one of the teams that already has a QB is sitting there. A young safety who is widely acknowledged to be the next thing has a ton of value at this point.
