I didn't mean to short change you. Let me try again. The answer to both "hated rival " and "QB graveyard" is "professiomalism". I'm not talking about what us, fans, think either. Hated/favorite teams do not apply at NFL level. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure players have their favs, but they can't show it, certainly not coming outta college. You don't want a GM thinking you might not play to 100% against a team that is your fav. Or loose your head, getting shaken off your game and make mistakes because you're up against hated team. So even if you have preferences, you can't show it. As to Eli, I think his actions were completely unprofessional. It's not brought up and pounded because he won and because it's the Giants. Even then the narrative, if I recall correctly, was that he didn't want to play against his brother. It was BS, but note the spin: "I don't want to be in situation where my preferences affect my game." Highlighting professionalism. Point is, the professional approach is very important to GMs. So if Darnold refuses to be drafted just to avoid a specific team, it will be noted and remembered.
USC QB's don't impress me; they are generally playing with stacked rosters when they are successful enough to get attention. It's real easy to look good when your running game is opening up canyons to run through and your receivers are beating the coverage on every play.
Darnold isn't going to stay in college to avoid the Jets or any other team. That is the media making up a story to sell. There is zero evidence to even support the claim.
Darnold has two examples to learn from in his own backyard that tells him when your a projected to pick in the draft you go, no matter how much you love being a USC QB.
I felt the same way for 30 years..now my feelings are find a franchise QB and a competent head coach and the rest will take care of itself...until then it will just be a roller coaster ride of one year 9-7 and the next 5-11 like it has been since 1969.
Right oh then, gonna take that as meaning you would play for the Pats, you horrible man I think rivalry means more in English football than in the NFL, as you say the way you are drafted leaves you not a lot of choice on who your team is going to be, they are essentially well paid slaves or sides of meat whatever works best as an analogy.
Last I checked cousins is still there?? They made an idiotic move by franchising him for 3 years but if the point is to find a QB i'd say it worked out perfectly for WAS
Agreed. I'll be honest I didn't want Mariota or Winston. For years I've been of the mindset just draft the best players you can, get a serviceable QB with a great def and we can win. Not anymore. We need to turn this franchise around completely. The NFL has changed too much. I'll ALL in on finding a FQB at all cost
I didn't want those guys either...I think the Marshall Fitzpatrick Jets falling apart was the last straw for me..enough of the veteran band aid and draft BPA approach....if we have to be awful for a year to get Darnold or Rosen then just do it.
I personally would not play for the Pats. But if my son does, it'd be a pro thing for him to do. I'll dishonor him and he won't be allowed into the house, but he can play Rivalry is diluted in general. It's more pronounced in US, but it's true everywhere. It used to be that you're going to stay with the same team for your whole carreer and so it becomes your home, your family. Now players move a lot and there is rarely any real attachment to a specific place and team.
I wanted Winston, not Mariota. Still feel the same today. I would've traded anything for him. We missed on Carr too.
Opposite choice for me, though either would've been fine IMO. The way the NFL is run today, it's all about Offense. How much more exciting was the last SB, with so many points scored and an amazing (ref-assisted) comeback than a 13-10 snoozefest? The NFL knows that scoring sells and so has rigged the game towards this outcome. In light of that, the successful teams build their offense, and that means you get a FQB at all costs and build around his strengths, NOT build a team and hope that you can find a QB who can fit in. Can a team win a championship without a FQB? Sure, but it's much harder to do that because you then need above-average to excellent players in all the other positions. And on top of that, you need everything to fall just right. In contrast when you have a Joe Montana, John Elway, Peyton Manning, and yes, Tom Brady, you can overcome the inevitable adversity and days when everything doesn't go just right because guys like these can lift a team up all by themselves. This is why you need to roll the dice every chance you get to find your FQB, even at the risk of failing - the pay off far outweigh that risk. Again, this is why the Jets should've taken Mahomes or Watson - or even Kizer later. Doing so would not have precluded them from taking a QB in 2018, and might've landed them their FQB already. We know for sure that the odds are very long that Hack or Petty are FQBs, so an astute GM would've decided to cut one of them to make room for someone with more promise since the operating plan was a rebuild anyway. Keeping both Petty and Hack and signing a washed up vet like McCown shows no clear commitment either way. Typical Jets dysfunction.
USC quarterback on the east coast. Sounds familiar. And no guy named 'Darnold' will be successful in the NFL. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Jets.
Darnold is easily the best college prospect since Luck. I actually think Darnold looks a lot better as a sophomore than Luck did. To me, Darnold is the first college QB I've seen since Montana that has Montana's pocket presence - he's not mobile, he's just really, really hard to sack because he makes small movements all over the pocket avoiding pressure and keeping his eyes downfield. This is an unteachable skill and Darnold has it in spades. He's a no-brainer #1 pick in the draft ... which almost makes it a given that the Jets will either: A) Win a meaningless game in December that screws them out of the chance to draft him, or B) Have the worst record in football, get the #1 overall pick, and select someone else (probably a different QB, who will immediately flunk out of the league). On a related note, Lamar Jackson is a better version of Michael Vick, but unfortunately, you can't have a running QB in the NFL because the first time they get hit, the coaching staff tells them not to run anymore (which, btw, is what happened to Sanchez, even though he wasn't a "running" QB).
Haha it's Mark Sanchez all over again. Watching how slow he started in last nights game and then having a crazy comeback at the last minute. I feel like we've seen this outcome already. He ain't ready for the windy meadowlands. On a side note, he's clearly better and more experienced than Sanchez was.
We shouldn't draft the best QB prospect since Luck because he plays for USC and we once drafted Mark Sanchez..sounds legit. What I'm worried about is getting the second pick and drafting Rosen..don't like him at all.
