Gee, I hope you are right but I feel the complete opposite as I stated in my post. Its a done deal, just trying to figure out who's the backup
I don't think the OL is as bad as last weeks debacle, Three different starters from week 1, Its pre season coaches are trying find the right guys so obviously last weeks starters are not gonna be the combo that's starting week 1. I am not saying I am not concerned about line but last weeks game is not the reason why.
It would be the definition of counterproductive if they started McCown. I'm praying Todd Bowles has the brains to realize this.
Who should be under center in Buffalo in 2 weeks? Hackenberg. Who will be? I have no idea. Neither does this coaching staff, it seems. Give the kid a chance and if he fails, after 6-8 games, turn the reigns over to Petty and see if he can do anything different than what he did in 2016. There's no reason for McCown to be on the field for this team and after seeing him not suit up in Detroit & now have little to zero practice reps, it's beginning to look like the organization feels the same way, despite him being the only one to put a TD on the board this Preseason. And if it winds up being McCown, what a joke that will be after him not seeing any time @ Detroit / barely any practice reps this week leading up to the "dress rehearsal" game vs the Giants. Either Bowles wasted weeks giving McCown 95% of the first team reps, only to name Hack or Petty the starter, or he isn't giving McCown enough reps and he will be behind the 8 ball when we kickoff in Buffalo. I don't care that he's a veteran and 38 years old. He's a career journeyman in a rookie OC's system with young WR's all around him. He needs time to develop chemistry with the playmakers in this offense. Whoever the starter is does.
If McCown does not start or play significantly with the #1's tomorrow then that means one the young kids is starting in Buff. Bowles cant expect Mccwon to start the season after one drive with the 1's. And if he is the starter he cant play week 4. I guess we will know what our QB killer coach ( #2, Rex was the first) is up to once we see who starts tomorrow. All Bets are off if Josh does not start and my prediction that snaps this week were a competition for who's the backup QB. I hope the coach has a good plan but you know how I feel about this guy
Before I expose any QB to the fire of real game action, I want them to have NFL/Pro Style QB 101 (checks, reads, knowing every play isn't going to be a winner) 90% locked down and commited to muscle memory. Only then could I expose them to the knocks and bruises of the real world where they will be up against real men and coaches who'll be showing them a multitude of looks and traps. I don't think Hack is quite at this level yet. He still has all the attributes we drafted him for but the 2-3 year project we embarked on when we drafted him looks more like it will be the 3 year point before he can be let loose. So it's down to a choice between Petty and McCown..................I'd go with Petty IF he plays with/against the 1's in Metlife and doesn't crap the bed. Weeks 1 to 5 would be to see if BP can be a fully functional QB in this league even if it's at a backup level & If he gets hurt then I go with Josh. I also dress Hack and send him on late if we're being thrashed and let him experience full-speed football against (hopefully) prevent defenses. Judging on our record, BP's level of play and the readiness of Hack at this point in the season..........I'd either keep going with BP till loss 5 or 6 and switch to Hack or ride with Josh to the bye and let Hack loose down the stretch.
Good post. I agree fully with your approach and the fact that just because Hack isn't ready this year doesn't mean he is a lost cause. It's the most difficult position in all sports and the kid is only 22 years old. Petty is 26 and seems like he is getting that muscle memory. He just needs to prove it.
If Hack and Petty play the most tonight and stink then we will have 3 QB's not ready for the season. I like Bowles giving the kids a chance to start but the veteran is not ready either. He should have played last week. What if he has to start McCown to begin the season is he gonna play him in week 4 to get him ready? The whole thing is weird
I myself really wanna see Petty roll with the 1's and the OL Todd feels he will be using in the regular season. I think Petty has game and a good chance to prove something. I like Hack but he got rocked and exposed last game. Football is a game of numbers and those who fear McCown putting us out of a viable draft position to grab a QB should not worry. McCowns most recent body of work being his 2-20 record over the past three seasons equates to 0.66 wins per year. I have no idea why Bowles would be stuck with going with him. It's insane. If we play the young guys how much worse can they be 0% still means means 0-16 and McCown gets us 1 win. So let the young guys gain experience because McCown means nothing for this team. Nothing. I actually don't see a huge difference in game with Bryce and Josh. They both move the sticks and have a good attitude. Sure Josh might make an extra play or 2 per game but honestly who cares. Josh is who he is ....Bryce may show something we haven't seen with more game time. To add to this Josh McCown is 38....and on a very depleted offence. The only success he has had in his career is on a very loaded offence with weapons. To think he is going to have a revelation at 38 is ridiculous.
Trouble is that it's like one of those crazy movies where you end up with Kathy Ireland as your kicker and some super fast WR who can't catch the ball till the 'big game/play'. I could see this being an approach a franchise might try if they had an Eli/Brady/Favre but by the time Hack should probably be hitting his groove is when he'll be up against the 1st round draft pick QB/annointed saviour or another project QB (much like BP has been).
I agree. If they don't get him on the field to prove his worth its pretty much over for him in New York. The project is no longer a project. Sure he can sit on the bench but once there is a replacement in play he's all but forgotten. Adding to that he needs to show a lot more than he has to convince the Jets to not grab a QB in the 1st next year.
I'd take Kathy Ireland any way I could get her!!! I don't see the problem. If Hack isn't ready, he isn't ready. He won't succeed if he isn't. I say go with Petty until for at least 4-6 games and see what he can do. If he's struggling badly, then start giving Hack more reps and see if he has progressed enough to play. If so, give him the rest of the games. If he doesn't show he's ready this year, and Petty has shown that he's nothing more than a backup, then the Jets should draft a QB high next season. They can see how Hack looks in OTAs, mini-camp and early in TC. If the QB they drafted is ready to play, great!!! If Hack shows that he's ready, all the better! If they're satisfied with Petty as a the backup, they can showcase Hack in the preseason games and trade him if they want or keep in case the rookie struggles or gets injured. If Hack beats the rookie out in TC, so be it. IMO the bottom line is that they can't just give up on him and waste the draft pick. There will come a time where there will be diminishing returns if he hasn't developed and the Jets will need to cut bait, but we haven't reached that point yet. He will be a cheap backup for another 2-3 years and with the scarcity of QBs in the NFL, if he develops they should be able to at least recoup a 2nd round pick, if not a 1st round pick.
Ok so an hour before the Snoopy Bowl, the tally is McCown: 12 Hack: 16 Petty: 22 So as far as this board is concerned, Petty is the favorite. But the Jet media including Cimini and Mehta think Petty is an afterthought. Lets see who's right.
If he develops they should recoup a 2nd if not a 1st round pick? For Hack? There isn't a team in the NFL that would give a 5 dollar bill for his current services. Do you really believe this guy can develope to a point where a team would give a 1st or a 2nd? Who is gonna get him to that point developmentally? I do like your point of view on a lot of subjects, but Hack ain't one of them. I really believe you are reaching big time with thoughts and beliefs like that pertaining to Hack. We would have to give a team a high pick for them to trade for him. I believe that Hack, like Sanchez, will never pan out.
Bowles is an idiot and is more of a qb killer then Rex. He's faced with a decision with no good answers. Play mccown in week 4 with tbe ones for one drive and risk injury and go into week 1 with your starter playing 2 series or don't play him and go into week 1 playing one stinking series. Have you ever heard a starter with that little playing time especially on a new team. There's no way he's gonna be sharp and in synch with the wr. I don't care how much practice they had. What a dumb ass. Petty might not be able to backup him up imagine if mccown gets hurt Thursday night
McCown hasn't played since the opening set in preseason game 1. Why would he be the choice to start for the Jets. The guy is not even getting reps in training camp. So he is extremely rusty. Let's go with Petty and be dopne with it. But I'm sure Bowles will mess this up too.
That ship has sailed and we can now move on from Hackenberg. Its a wrap. Petty is out guy going forward, McCown back up and Hack clipboard duty for the entire season.
