IMO the issue isn't about getting the top pick doesn't equivocate to success. The issues are how good one's GM and Scouting Dept. are, and how lucky one is that in the year one is drafting #1 or in the top 3-4 that there are great players available at your positions of need (particularly at QB). In 1996 the Jets had the #1 pick. They had a big need at QB & WR, and I think RB. In typical Jets' fashion, it was a brutally bad draft for QBs. They took Keyshawn Johnson, but perhaps could have traded down, taken Marvin Harrison in the first and then Eddie George in the 2nd round, and then they wouldn't have had to give up all those draft picks for CuMar. Stupid Kotite screwed the pooch taking lead-footed and big mouthed Keyshawn Johnson and Alex Van Dyke 1-2. In 1997, the Jets could have gotten Peyton Manning and our history since could have rivaled what the Patriots has become, but thanks to that GD asshole Parcells, it didn't happen. Luck was with us that year that Manning was available and willing to play in NY, but we didn't have the right person calling the shots. In 2005, the Jets went 4-12. In the 2006 draft we got D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who was a great player for us, but again we had no luck in the QB dept. The 3 top QBs were Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler. Young went before the Jets' pick, but thank God we didn't take either Leinart or Cutler, although Cutler has been better than any QB we've had during the span since, and we at least might have been a lot more competitive, and may have even won in 2009 and 2010 and subsequent years with Rex. In 2006, the Jets squeezed a 10-6 season between two 4-12 seasons in 2005 and 2007. As a result, in the 2007 draft the Jets got Revis (and I think they had to trade up to get him) instead of perhaps getting Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas or Adrian Peterson, but at least that was a lousy draft for QBs and we didn't wind up with JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn. In 2007, the Jets again went 4-12. For the 2008 draft the Jets big needs were OLB pass rusher, QB, TE, I think maybe RB, and I forget what else. Who did we take? Vernon Gholston instead of Jerod Mayo, Keith Rivers, Joe Flacco, and Chris Johnson, then trade up for Dustin Keller. I liked Keller prior to the draft and wanted the Jets to take him, so I can't complain about their taking him, but Jordy Nelson, Eddie Royal or Matt Forté would have been better choices in the 2nd round. In 2014 the Jets could have taken either Carr or Bridgewater. They could have addressed our glaring need at WR in round 1 or 2, and didn't. Again, we had the luck that year to get the players we needed, and that moron Idzik screwed the pooch. There was also a year in there somewhere, where I think the last game of the season we had a 4th Qtr. KO return for a TD that cost us getting great QB prospect in the next year's draft. The point is that one has to have some luck and there be great players at your positions of need when you draft high, but then you have to take them when you have the opportunity. More often than not, the Jets have had opportunities, but the dumbass GMs screwed the pooch.
Well I didn't really, I was explaining the other guys thought process, I already told you I am not for drafting a QB at number 1
It was his 6th pass. He is going to throw picks and hold on to the ball too long, most young qbs do. The only way to get through it is reps reps and more reps
Also I never said they will go 0-16, I want them to go 0-16 that is a big difference, knowing the Jets it will be 8-8 and the rebuild stalls due to an awful draft position and we continue as is for the next 20 seasons. The only rebuild they did 2 years ago was get lucky that Williams dropped to 6th.
Never? I guess that Peyton Manning and John Elway were busts and the Colts and Broncos never won a SB because of them.
I didn't say the Jets could draft Darnold in 2018 and immediately compete for a SB. I have been respectful of you, and I expect the same. We all can use flawed logic at times to arrive at our opinions. There's no shame or insult in that. I'm sorry that you obviously took it as an insult. If the Jets' D is pretty much set, and we get our FQB, we're waaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of where the Lions were. We also have some other pieces on offense. If we got Darnold or Allen in 2018 and he is the real deal, plus some other pieces, we should be competitive in 2018, winning at least 4-6 games if which ever QB we drafted can start immediately. That's not even talking about all the cap space that we have to sign FAs in 2018. Then in 2019 with another draft and FA period the team should be even more competitive and perhaps be a playoff team. Then in 2020, the team should be ready to compete for the Lombardi Trophy or darned close to it. How is that smoking crack?
Growing pains and more growing pains. We're only one and a half weeks through training camp. If this is happening after two preseason games then there's an issue. Give the man his reps, we have nothing to lose but everything to gain.
How you lay out your last paragraph is kind of how I see it playing out. My disagreement with you and where you said several times I had flawed logic is where I think a winless Jets team means big problems with the talent the Jets have accumulated in the last years. I think a winless season means Williams and Adams and Lee are busts and the Jets need to replenish the entire defense. It's been 9 years since a team was winless in the NFL and that team even though it got a FQB and an elite defensive front was mediocre at best. If the Jets are winless in 2017 they are going BACKWARD and as a fan I don't want that to happen. And I also am not sold that there is any lock at QB to be drafted next year to warrant tanking. Not looking to be rude, and I appreciate all your thoughtful posts.
I had been following Connor Hughes too much. That dude blows. He is up to date. But apparently Hack had two/three nice TDs today and the Giants fan bitch (covering the Jets because it pays more) didn't even bother mentioning it.
I wouldn't say he's looked like shit. I mean Blake Bortles threw what, 5 in one practice? At least the kid is making plays as well. It's never good to turn the ball over, he's progressing and making plays. Should be interesting come preseason.
I just deleted it lol. I had been looking at Connor Hughes too much because he's up to date. But apparently Hack had two nice TDs in between the bad throws but Hughes couldn't even do his job properly (only bothered mentioning the INTs).
Exactly, no different than anything else, you have to make mistakes to learn. As long he is making good throws with the bad throws keep giving it to him.
He's been doing enough to get first reps in team drills. Slowly but surely he's getting there. I really hope he proves his worth this year. He's only 22 years old and has so much room to grow.
First, I know that you weren't looking to be rude. You never are, and we have always had a respectful, cordial relationship. You are one of my favorite posters, so I certainly meant no offense. We already know that Williams and Lee aren't busts, so that discredits that line of reasoning already. Further, we know that Claiborne, Mo, McLendon and Richardson aren't busts, either. In addition, there's no way that Adams or Maye are busts. That much has been evident in OTAs and TC. Therefore, if the Jets were to go winless, that would mean that there has to be another logical reason why they did other than that they have no talent on D and have to burn the whole thing down and start over. Among those reasons would be: 1) that the defensive alignment/strategy and/or play calling by Bowles and Rodgers were severely flawed; 2) that the offense struggled the whole season, sustained few drives, scored few points and as a result, the defense tired quickly; 3) that the offense turned the ball over frequently; 4) that the STs units were ineffective or bad; 5) they lost at least one game, possibly more, due to mistakes by rookies/young players; 6) that the game planning and preparation by Bowles, Rodgers and Morton were flawed and inadequate; 7) that quite possibly this happened as a result of several of the top defenders going down with injuries. If the Jets go winless in 2017 it does not mean that they are going backwards any more than if they just win 2-3 games. Did the Jets winning only one game in 1996 indicate that the team had no talent and was going backwards? No. It just meant that Kotite was an utter and absolute incompetent boob, and he didn't work the team hard enough and have it prepared to play. With some additions in the draft, FA, and good coaching in '97 from Parcells and his staff, the team went 9-7. Similarly, winning 0 games this season just means that Bowles and Rodgers are incompetent, that they had some extra tough luck with bad or sloppy play at inopportune times, had some critical injuries, were perhaps undone by some rookie mistakes, and that the CS didn't do a good job with game planning and getting the team prepared. With a new CS in 2018, the team might not go from 0-16 to 9-7, but they could easily go to 6-10 or 8-8, and take a big step forward towards being a playoff team. The team isn't "tanking" and I'm not advocating that. A FO and CS cannot nor should not ever take that approach. That doesn't mean that we as fans can't root that the team lose a game or two when it could prove ultimately more beneficial to the team in the long run. Next year's draft is supposed to be a very good one. Even if it wasn't supposed to be a good one for QBs (which it is), the Jets do have needs at least for now at LT, OLB, #1 WR, OL depth, quite possibly upgrades/replacements for Shell, Carpenter, and Johnson, probably a #1 type RB, and maybe even a #1 CB or ILB. By drafting first in the draft in every round, the Jets would have the opportunity to address many of those positions and upgrade/fix them even if they couldn't get a FQB in the draft. They could stay put and quite possibly get new starters in rounds 1-4, or could trade down in a round or two, and possibly get as many as 5-6 new starters out of the first 4 rounds. Then if Mac continued to add good players via 5-7 as he seems to have done already, the team would be greatly improved in one draft. Add in several new faces via FA and the team would definitely be moving forward and getting better.
