Well we simply disagree on the impact that Fournette or McCaffrey would've had on this team. Frankly, given who they now have at QB, either of these guys would be legitimate saviors to any of these 3 QBs, and thus their impact even more positive. And I fully agree with your assessment of what was available in the 2nd round offensively, which is why I said that they should've passed on Adams, as great as he may be. From all reports Maye is nearly, if not exactly, his equal, so again, they could've upgraded the "O" and the "D" instead of just the "D". In the long run, had they taken Mahomes, I feel certain they would've gotten their FQB, but I understand that was a big gamble. However, adding a stud playmaker to the offense given their current make up, would've made an immediate and huge impact.
I personally agree with the people here, but this is a bit of a difficult situation for Bowles. Especially if he thinks he is coaching for his job and he needs to win. They have been preaching competition all year, the best player will play, and other training camp cliches. It is tough to preach open competition, then give most of the reps to Hack and Petty just because they're younger. By all accounts, no QB has even been good. I'm sure Bowles would love for one of the QB's to separate, but all three have been largely unimpressive.
But he is giving all the reps to mccown and preaching open competition. What's the difference. And since none of the qbs are showing much why is mccown still getting starter reps(all of them)? He is completely mishandling this qb situation
I agree. I am just trying to put myself in his shoes. He said the reps will change when someone impresses him. By all accounts no one has been impressive at all. He went in with McCown as starter, and Hack and Petty have not been able to unseat him. If Hack and Petty havent been impressive with the 2's and 3's, how can you justify to the rest of the team promoting either of them to play with the 1's. If Bowles is coaching for his job, he needs to play the QB who gives him the best shot to win. From a team development perspective, I 100% agree with you. But if I'm trying to put myself in Bowles situation, I can kind of see why he is doing things this way.
First, according to what Bowles SAID, it was supposed to be an EVEN competition, NOT "He went in with McCown as starter," Second, what is Macc and Woody's primary objective? To turn this franchise around from a perennial joke to a winner, or to save Bowles's job? If Macc/Woody allow Bowles to go with McCown, they all deserve to burn in hell.
1. Bowles strategy has always been to go in with someone as the starter, until they are replaced. That has never changed to my knowledge. "You're the starter, until your not." Unfortunately, Hack and Petty arent even playing well with backups. I assume the preseason games will be Hack and Petty's big opportunities to get promoted. 2. Woody and Macc's primary objective is to turn this franchise around, and put the best team possible out there. I think that is fairly obvious. Or at least it should be. But if they are not on the same page with Bowles, its tough to blame Todd for trying to win the most games possible. 3. Now if the three of them got together, and came to a consensus that this is a year for the young players to develop, and that Bowles is not coaching for his job, and he continued to only play McCown, I'd be super pissed. This is essentially what I said last year. There doesnt seem to be a consistent vision between coach, GM and owner. Cant win now, or build for the future this way.
Right now the message he is sending is, you don't have to be good as long as the person behind you is worse. If mccown is less than impressive and we all know he has been for most of his career than he should rotate the reps. Also, if he is coaching for his job while the gm is stripping the roster we have bigger organizational issues.
I mean isnt that what a competition is? The least bad player will play. I would say best, but there is no "best" of this group, lol. The bolded is what I've been saying for almost three years. You cant have a coach who is out there trying to win the most games possible, while having a GM who is trying to tear it down. The two strategies bring opposite results. Everyone needs to be on the same page. Kind of like Brett Brown and the Sixers. He wasnt judged on wins and losses because you couldn't win with that group. Now that their rebuild is complete, the coach will be judged on wins and losses. The organization was on the same page (for the most part). I assume at the end of the season we will see Mac and Bowles gone, and hopefully roll with a more traditional Organizational structure.
Maybe they haven't been impressive with the 2's and 3's because they are playing with the 2's and 3's. An open competition would have seen then each having some time with the 1s, not Hack and Petty running for their lives behind the 2's and 3's of the OL. Hell, the starting O line may suck this season, can you imagine having to play behind their back ups? As far as seeing it from Bowles perspective, I'm a fan, I want what is best for the team, if Bowles is good enough he can have a true competition and keep his job.
The argument there is that you're also playing against 2's and 3's. If you cant play against the 2's and 3's, why should I expect to be able to play against the 1's? Not to mention, Hack got time with the 1's today, so clearly he must be showing something (which is nice). I understand that you see it from a fans perspective. I do too. You think I want to see shitty McCown playing? Of course not. But, sometimes it helps to better understand a situation when you take off your fan glasses. If Bowles only objective this year is to win games, there is no reason to look at Hackenberg over McCown unless he legitimately looks better. Hopefully things shake out a bit more with the preseason games.
Playing against 2's and 3's when you are talking about the Jets D line likely includes some excellent players since that is their strength. The 2's would probably include one of Richardson, Wilkerson or Williams and one of Deon Simon or Mike Pennel, in addition to, what appears to be, some solid up and coming LBs like Donahue. Looking at it from Bowles perspective is only important if I want to have compassion for him, I understand completely why he is doing it but it goes completely against what he said he would do and I don't care if he is doing it to keep his job, that isn't important to me. It just annoys me that I was saying beginning to middle of last season that he should have another season to see if things come around, I was wrong there.
How can anyone determine if hack is gonna be a good nfl qb when playing with jv weapons? And our ol might suck to. Man this is gonna be an historically bad offense no matter who is qb. It almost doesn't matter anymore. We r doomed regardless. F Woody
The Twitter verse was pointing out the number of sacks today by untouched blitzers up the middle. Its hard to judge a QB when thats happening and WRs are inexperienced, dropping balls, running laps, etc. Gonna be a long season...I hope our D has a lot of depth for all the minutes they're gonna play. On the bright side, should be some good fantasy players on our D given all the opportunities they will have.
I agree. If they do call him on it, they won't need to make it public, we'll see the change in how the reps for each are handled. That's the important thing.
