Mac and Bowles speak about these kinds of things and work together. Ultimately, the decision is Bowles, but he has had input from Mac, and if things have changed behind the scenes, Bowles may know that his future with the team rests in Mac's hands. Yes, in one sense, they do waste reps, and it is usually best to resolve things as early as possible, but in this situation, from the Jets' perspective, it's a necessary evil. I only think McCown should start if Hack doesn't know the offense and can't go through his progressions quickly, or if his confidence level isn't where it needs to be. I would have been fine with their just handing the starting job to Hack and it been his to lose in TC. The problem is that both Mac and Bowles are on record as saying that they think players should earn the starting position and not just have it handed to them. Thus they want the competition. Hopefully, Hack soon has McCown in his rear view mirror (and Petty does as well as the backup), and it is resolved sooner rather than later.
As MWB said, I first picked up on him a bunch of years ago on JetsInsider before that went to Scout. I just wanted to post those to get a perspective other than the trash from Semeny and his ilk. I kinda trust him and his view.
Good question. It is actually more my deduction based on the comments that Darryl Slater made in his column yesterday or Sunday. He mentioned that Hack was holding the ball "way, way too long" (or something to that extent) and had taken what would have been 6+ sacks if the defense could tackle the QB. With Petty there was no mention of holding the ball too long or of his taking any sacks. Instead, the focus was on either the great or bad throws he made and perhaps some bad decisions. IMO that (no mention of holding the ball too long or taking any sacks) means that Petty is getting through his progressions faster and getting the ball out quicker; otherwise, Slater would probably have mentioned that about Petty. Since it wasn't said explicitly, that's why I said "supposedly."

Petty is finished in NY... Lets stop pretending that the team has any other plans for him except PS. Too bad Petty took that beating last year as it turned out to be a complete waste of time for all involved. It killed his potential Qb career as well. Petty needs a change of scene and team PDQ. Good kid got fucked last year. Happens all the time. Just ask David Carr or Joey Harrington. Petty went from 4th rd. DP to sacrificial lamb in '16 to afterthought in '17. That sort of career trajectory usually ends up in a pile of rubble on the ground somewhere in palookaville.
Dak got the reps by default , he was the only healthy QB in camp, Kizer was getting mostly 3rd string reps and is now splitting 2nd team reps with Osweiler. Kessler is getting the most reps in Brown's camp.
It seemed like Petty got a fair shot here in '17 If he can't hang with Hackenberg and McCown that is on his shoulders. If he becomes an afterthought in 17 it's because he doesn't have the talent to play. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Yeah... If Petty doesn't get the reps, its his fault... Either way, Petty needs to get as far away from the Jets as he can while he can salvage what's left of a potential professional football career. As usual, the Jets' "Qb competition" is a farce. Its ALWAYS a farce. Has been and forever shall be a farce. Its in their DNA. Its how they roll. In fact, I challenge you to name ONE Jet Qb competition that wasn't a farce. Good luck with that... Fact is, Petty got his ass kicked last year for nothing. He should be cut immediately to make roster space for someone the Jets actually have plans for. Will the Jets do it? I sure hope so. Maybe Petty has the balls to ask for his release. Would show me something if he did..
I am just saying - if Petty were playing like he deserved the reps he'd be getting them, no? Maybe you think that his reps are being cut back solely because of McCowns money or the round Hack was drafted in? Even then - it was on Petty to stand up and deliver. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...-looking-ready-in-camp-competition/104079340/ Perhaps the source was incorrect? I saw numerous videos of him throwing to Corey Coleman with a defender on him.
Thanks guys. I thought it was a news site. Seems like he is a Jet fan like us. Good report on his side.
It wouldn't have mattered. Petty was severely damaged last year both physically and mentally. The Jets in effect, transformed Bryce Petty into David Carr. Lets not be so naive as to think McCown's cash or Hack's draft status doesn't play a part ok? Macc's reputation is on the line here as far as being able to judge talent as well. Lets not forget the entire league thought Macc was crazy drafting Hack where he did so there's no incentive to prove them wrong? really now.... McCown's cash and Bowles' tenuous job status pretty much secures McCown will get the majority of the snaps. Best chance to win and all that. Odd man out? Bryce Petty, resident sap.
but mac traded up to pick petty too. petty is a 4th rd spread qb with a live arm. chances were good from the jump he would end up bouncing around the league as a back up, 3rd stringer before phasing out no matter who drafted him, there is no injustice here, just a fan base over rating yet another bench qb
I will say it's nice reading positive comments from fellow fans who are getting excited about the coming season. 'Suck for Sam' was getting really old. Thank god camp has started. Go JETS!!!!
He didn't get many first team reps till day 4 , as of now the Brown's are Rotating all 4 QBs, Kessler is getting the majority of the snaps, osweiler is slipping( too many picks, Kizer has apparently moved ahead of him and Hogan is getting less reps than Kizer and osweiler. Hue Jackson and Kizer are supposed to be joined at the hip through out practice and he is spending alot off time working with him. Jackson also stated he would evaluate the film and possibly make adustments after Fridays practice. No difference between the Jets and Browns but we are only feeding 3 QBs reps not 4. Petty has thrown some nice passes with the first string but is not getting the majority of the snaps, and neither is Kizer.
yeah I think they will, lol I said I understand they are doing it piece by piece.. guess I was just throwing it out there that I hope the OC is nothing like the previous ones.
I'm not so sure about that. Perhaps if Petty were drafted by a team that actually had a clue about developing a Qb, things would have been different. It was Petty's shit luck that he got drafted by apparently one of the worst franchises in the history of the NFL when it comes to developing Qb's. If Petty's luck were better, perhaps he would have been drafted by the Saints, or the Boys', or even the Texans. Maybe SD where he would have had a chance at succeeding Rivers. Even Atlanta would have been a better landing spot. Nooooooo, the football gods shit all over Petty's career. He got drafted by a team known for NOT developing Qb's. His first boss was an ancient OC that had no idea what a modern NFL offense looks like who was either all run, or all pass. Petty actually won a real NFL game behind an Oline that couldn't block kittens and did its best to get him killed. None of that matters.. Petty today might well be a JAG Qb with no future, but it didn't have to be that way. Thanks to the Jets though, Petty can join all the other young promising Qb's destroyed by being drafted by the wrong franchise. Just bad f'n luck for Petty. Time to move on.. For the Jets and for Petty.
