Petty has turned the ball over more then anyone at camp so far. I don't mind Hack taking sacks, as long as he isn't reverting bad to old habits. Better that then turning the ball over. Hack hopefully continues to get confident and that should help improve the pocket presence.

It's a 2 man race. Always was one. Petty has barely progressed from year 1 to now. And how old is he again?

Didn't Hack run a very similar offense under O'Brian his first year at Penn State. 2 TE. Lots of quick passes, bubble screens , quick slants. He was pretty good in that offense.
This would make up for a lack of Wide Recievers. ( I know we have 14 on the roster but not one of them is more than a 3rd option on any other roster, Enunwa maybe a second) , and questionable O line. Get the run game going, quick passes and that opens up the opportunity for a deep pass. Just because Hack has a Cannon , you can just throw deep every play.

This is encouraging news if it continues. Its great to have receiving TEs but a 2-way TE is a necessity. This could be a very underrated signing imo.

    BLOCKING DRILLS
Bowles got things started pretty early in practice with an intense blocking drill. But the linemen weren't involved. Instead, running backs and tight ends worked on blocking safeties and linebackers. With this the first time in pads, and this the first drill to feature hitting, it was fun to watch.
    ...
Chris Gragg, whom the Jets claimed this week, stood out a lot here. He seems to be a tremendous blocker. He stifled quite a few attempts from various safeties and linebackers.

Petty has turned the ball over more than anyone at camp so far? LOL Both McCown and Petty have one interception.

Taking sacks is not good. They lead to strip sacks and fumbles. Especially with Hack's taking a pounding at PSU and getting shell-shocked, taking sacks is the very last thing any Jets fan should be OK with. Hopefully, that improves as he learns the offense better, feels more comfortable and confident.

Petty is several years older than Hack. IMO that's the main thing working against him.

Saying that Petty has barely progressed from year 1 is patently untrue. In fact, it's a downright lie.

I haven't seen much progression from him, he was always a QB that could make some nice throws down the field, but at no point have I seen Petty have command of the offense.

It CAN potentially lead to strip sacks and fumbles, but all indications are that Hack hasn't had those type of turnovers in TC. Petty has turned the ball over, and if McCown is right there with Petty in TOs then we know who is protecting the football better at this stage. As Hack gets more comfortable in the offense, his pocket presence will get better. It's no doubt, Hack is better then Petty.

Hack is going to get hit in his career, honestly I don't mind the sacks as long as they aren't drive ending sacks. I don't mind it at all as long as he's not reverting back to old habits. He's a big guy, I think he's pretty durable. What needs to start happening is increase the first team reps. Hack still needs to display better touch on some of his passes as well. Right now, Hack seems to be getting command of the offense.

I was wondering if the first preseason game would be too early, but the Jets need an answer ASAP so they can stop wasting the first team reps. I want to see a "chess match" with Hack vs Jamal Adams, especially as training camp progresses and the playbook is more installed.

EDIT- but absolutely on board if Bowles drops the ball in terms of this, he needs to go. Kizer is getting a lot of attention over in Cleveland, they aren't babying him like we are with Hack.

Man, I liked kizer as the best prospect last year, will be watching him.
Right now I am wondering if Bowles will even switch up the rotation. 3 days in and it's been the same. If it doesn't happen this week then the competition can probably be called a farce.

It's still very early, but imo there are a lot of exciting things and good news in this report.

First and foremost, is the progress that Hack has made and is making. If he can continue to build on this, we may have some real hope that he can be our FQB. Whether Bowles will actually start him to begin the regular season if he's ready and wins the competition will be another thing.

The second most exciting thing for me are the TEs. I missed that the Jets had picked up Chris Gragg this week. He's a solid vet and a very good blocker. The Jets are also supposedly very high on Jason Vander Laan, a former college QB. ASJ has been the offensive star of the offseason, Leggett is looking good as is Tomlinson, at least in terms of blocking. The Jets may actually have a tough time deciding how many TEs they'll keep and after ASJ and Leggett, who they'll cut. Who would have thought the TE position could possibly wind up being a strength?

When the Jets signed Claiborne, I thought he'd be a one-year rental. He seems to be healthy and playing at a very high level. If he can stay healthy, I could see the Jets signing him to a 3- or 4-year contract. Hopefully, he'll want to stay.

I like the comraderie I'm reading about among the defenders. IMO that's a great sign and very encouraging, as is the play of some of the depth-type players like Stanford, Doug Middleton, and Shamarko Thomas. Burris is looking very good as well, and with most HCs would have a real shot at unseating Skrine, but with Bowles all bets are off.

Myles White and Chris Harper's names are being mentioned as making plays in practice and looking good. The WR competition could be fierce and really interesting. This is even more true since the top two KOR/PR prospects are both WRs as well (Frankie Hammond and Lucky Whitehead).

I think that Mo Wilk is gonna have a monster year.

Only 3 days into camp and reps are being wasted? ROFLMAO Talk about going overboard. Chill, dude.

Hack is NOT being babied. Mac is being smart. You just don't recognize proper handling of a QB prospect because we've never seen it from the Jets.

    1. Mac had nothing to do with this. Bowles dishes out the reps to whom he wants
    2. Qb competitions waste reps. It's just the way it is. At the end of the day you gave starter reps to a guy that won't be starting.thats why it's best to solve these things early.

Yeah, I told you last year also that reps were being wasted on shitty vets and it's happening again. Notice the majority of young QBs in this league like Kizer and Dak last year got the majority of the team reps. McCown is nothing special, he's not a teacher by any means. He fumbles the football, turns it over then gives you a nice cute back shoulder fade to show he's still relevant.

As @FJF point out, this has nothing to do with Mac. Bowles wasting his time. No player on the team is talking about McCown, the teammates want to see Hack out there playing.

Can you cite anyone specific who said that Petty is going through progressions faster and showing more pocket poise? I follow the reports pretty closely and I haven't seen either of those mentioned.

Hackenberg hasn't fumbled while being "sacked" in training camp because you aren't allowed to hit the QB. Kinda hard to get the ball knocked out of your hands when they blow the whistle before you are even touched.

Might also be another reason why he's not being affected by these "sacks" on subsequent plays. Sacks tend to have more of a lingering effect when it means getting knocked on your ass vs. paddy cake and a quick whistle. The sacks concern might also be another reason why the staff is still favoring McClown. Like Mike Tyson said "everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth"

Indeed - this is the bit that really stood out to me and actually (dare I say it) made me feel excited for the first time in a while (about football, anyway).

"Some of his passes were just marvelous." Best thing I've heard about a Jets QB for a long time.

This is a really cool video from yesterday's practice. There are some nice throws from Hack at 0:16, 0:32 and 0:47. The throw at 0:29 is also his and is a pretty good ball but a better play by Burris (who I'm optimistic about). Certainly some interesting early signs from Hackenberg.

I think he needs to continue getting familiar with the offense for sure. Each QB has had some sort of issues, wherever it's taking sacks or throwing interceptions. I do want to see Hack get "punched in the mouth", I want to see if he reverts to old habits or not. First preseason game will tell us a little bit in terms of that.

Absolutely. One of the biggest differences you can see in these videos is that he's coming through on his throws instead of falling away, and it's really improving his accuracy. That's a lot easier to do while wearing a red jersey than it is in a game, so that first game vs Tennessee should be a huge indicator of how "fixed" those mechanics really are.

There is a reason why Hack is the QB featured on everything. On their videos and on their Snapchat the only QB to get facetime throwing is Hackenberg.
