What does Hack need to do to be the incumbent going in to 2018?

What I'm seeing in this thread is that as long as he completes 113% of his pass attempts, throws at least 54 TD passes, and -3 INTs, is only sacked for positive yardage, negates other players' penalties, wins no fewer than two MVP trophies and at least eleven super bowls in 2017, TGG will consider approving his remaining on the roster next year.

You know, if he does those things, he will be a peak trade value this offseason....

Hack will have to be everything and then some, to be the QB OTF. The members on our board who believe he is that guy, have called all doubters and naysayers dumb dumbs, and lack football knowledge.
The "Hack-backers" need to tell us what he is going to do, fold up or become the QB that they envision?
We are in the NFL, not the Pop-Warner developmental league. The NFL doesn't nurture long term project QB's, it's a Darwinist system. To say they nurture long term is silly.
Tell us "Hack-Backers", is he gonna be the man, or is he gonna shrivel up and die like so many in the past?

Is 2017 year one or year three? We've been rebuilding for a while now! Personally I'd like to see one more good draft near the top (top 6) before we launch our 5-in-a-row

When have we been rebuilding ?

The last two years seemed to have been filled with old "give us the best chance to win" players, that isn't a rebuild that is a band aid over a gaping wound fix, now this is a rebuild, youth players all over the place and we are just going to have to be patient and watch them grow into their rolls, it won't be pretty but it is what we need to do, we can't bumble around being a half assed team any longer.

Now, now, now, I don't think anybody has called the doubters dumb and in fact I would suggest the people you describe as "hack backers" (and btw you make it sound so dirty to support a young lad that is one of our own players :() are willing to give him a chance to perform or not as the case may be, rather than the other types of fan that would prefer to stick the knife into the kid at all angles before they have even seen him play, a bit like yourself with digs all over the place, it isn't needed at the end of the day, I hope he is a success as that means the Jets have one position locked down in our rebuild, a lot of people on here will hope he isn't so they can scream "i told you so" and that is pathetic tbh.

I believe what the vast majority of those not bashing him, have only said he needs to be given a chance before writing him off. Anyone that thinks he needs "to be everything and then some" in what would be his first year playing, is just delusional. With that thinking I guess Aikman, Manning and a slew of other QBs would have been out of the league after their first year playing.

Did you ever think that maybe the reason so many QBs have crashed and burned over the last 10 years is because many teams did go away from letting QBs redshirt?

Aaron Rogers was drafted at a time when rookie contracts were 6 years. A team could afford to take their time to develop a QB in those days. Now contracts are four years. Teams have less time to find out if they made the right choice.

Afford? Franchise QB's are nearly priceless for a franchise. If I had to develop a QB for 8 years to get 6 franchise QB years out of the guy it would be worth it.

Its the most intellectually demanding position in all sports. There are only maybe a thousand guys in all the world that have the PHYSICAL capabilities for the role. If it takes a few years extra to get the mental side, who cares? As long as they get there.

That's all well and good but what are you going to pay your "developmental" QB that you drafted in the first round and gave a big rookie contract to, after his third year of learning on the bench?

We keep forgetting that Hack wasn't a first rounder. He was a second round pick and Petty was a 4th rounder. Neither of these guys were considered anything but a gamble.

I don't know what you would pay the guy, but if he isn't a franchise QB when negotiations begin you pay him backup money and structure it to pay starter or even franchise money if he hits certain benchmarks.

I guess I'll put it another way. If the Jets end up with the 1st pick in the draft they will be drafting a QB. It's really that simple

Is it that simple ? Can you people not understand that somebody may play well with out winning or is that too simple for you ?
Picking a qb with the number 1 pick is no guarantee of pulling a franchise qb, plus you are talking about a team that last used their first round pick on an offensive player when again ?

So that isn't even a guarantee either.

Nothing in sport or life is simple.

I wonder if Brady was considered a gamble taken in whatever late round he was taken in 6th or 7th can't remember tbh

I think one of them was a project rather than a gamble though but even so every bloody pick in the draft is a gamble, the number 1 pick is a massive gamble for whoever has it.

Technically, every pick is a "gamble", but when we're using that term I think it mostly applies to 1st or 2nd rounders, where careers may be damaged or ended by a losing bet. Given Hack's troubles in college after his first year, I think he qualifies as a gamble.

Does it matter if he is a gamble btw ?

I still prefer the wait and see before stating/hinting/implying he is a bust/gonna be shit/we need to draft a qb at 1 next season approach myself, call me old fashioned but I like to support our younger players, I realise it may seem outlandish but maybe a few more could give it a shot.
