How do you know what you are settling for, he hasn't thrown a damned ball YET, do you understand that part ? But I am settling for the shittest season ever, the third team to go 0 in a season will be fantastic stuff, we can move right along with the rebuild and resetting of this franchise. If we get zero wins, 1 or 2 all good, even better if the youth players also show some of promise along the way and all the better if Hack shows he has a future and we can use the number one pick on something else next season. But he has to be given a chance before being written off, I am unsure what people like yourself get out of knocking him before you see him play.
In a perfect world, we'd like to see Hackenberg get all 16 games and if not the entire season, at least 10 starts, so we can get somewhat of a true evaluation of where his future might be heading. However, can we actually get a real evaluation of him with the pieces this offense is giving him, Petty or McCown to work with? In order to really start to believe he has a chance to be the future here, he will really have to impress without a boatload of talent at the WR position behind a less than stellar OL. This will be no easy task. His top 5 WR's will be a mixture of rookies & "veterans" with combined total receptions of 70, 42 and 19 and only one of them will have played more than one full NFL season. His most experience target will be TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who is suspended until Week 3. His number 1 WR, Quincy Enunwa, has 70 career receptions and has spent most of the past two seasons lining up/facing OLB's, S's and Nickel & Dime-backs. Now he will be asked to beat the best CB's in the game on a weekly basis. Will he be able to produce enough that the field opens up enough for the other WR's and ASJ? Can Forte & Powell produce enough to make defenses stack the box? If they can't, I don't see how any QB is set up for success here. Despite all of this, in a perfect world we'd like to see, or at least I'd like to see, Hack complete around 60% of his passes & have his TD #'s be higher than his fumble/INT #'s. It sounds like a simple thing, but that should be a challenge for any QB on the 2017 Jets. Also, if he could lead a few game winning drives towards the end of the season (ala Eli Manning in 2004), that would tremendously help his stock as well. No one is expecting him to hit the field, throw for 4,000 yards and win 8-10 games. Just win a couple of games, have a decent or high completion % and keep the turnovers down. If he can do this, and the current regime stays in place, I think he will make the decision as to take a QB or not in the 1st round next year a little bit harder.
Hack will not start this season until game 7 and he will take a pounding. So the Jets will get one of the top QB's next year and Hack will be another 2nd round footnote. Maybe that open competition will happen in Houston with his old coach. You know the one he had the most success with.
I honestly don't think it matters. This team has been set up for the 2018 draft. Anything he gives us will be a surprise or just confirm what we already know.
What do we know though ? 1 as a freshman he could run a pro offence with a good coach 2 as a senior he learned to get sacked behind a poor ol with a coach that was less than helpful As a pro we still know FA
He has to win enough games not to be in position to draft a Darnold/Allen/Rosen. There is nothing he can do if the Jets are in position to draft one of those guys assuming they look like legit top 5 QB prospects. Jets cannot pass on a legit top 5 QB prospect just because Hackenburg showed promise or didn't look like the complete disaster many expect of him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Who are these legit QB prospects ? Can you guarantee they are ready to be a legit starter from the gun ? Take a look back to last seasons draft http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-draft-wentz-goff-lead-deep-quarterback-class The best bits... Top 5 1 Wentz 3782 yards, 16 TD 14 INT 62.4% 79.3 passer rating 2 Goff - Rams 1089 yards, 5 TD 7 INT 54.6% 63.6 passer rating 3 Lynch - Broncos 497 yards, 2 TD 1 INT 59% passer rating 79.2 4 Cook - Raiders 150 yards,1 TD 1 INT 66.7% 83.4 passer rating 5 Hackenberg - red shirted Most overrated Prescott- We all know what he achieved and it was not overrated at all in the end. Most underrated Brissett - Cheats, he went to sit under Brady and the other one and got lucky to get a game first year Boom or Bust Hack and Jones - Bills 1 game Sleeper Bercovici - undrafted signed with Chargers on futures contract I guess there just isn't a lot of guarantees out there at any stage of the draft, so if we lost 0-16 / 2-14 and Hack showed promise enough to keep moving forward with I would be happy to pass on any of the next stage QB's, none of them come with a guaranteed success certificate, taking a QB in round 1 is always a huge risk. On a side note it will be interesting to see how Prescott goes in his second season.
It depends which QB declares for the draft. If the Jets have the top pick one or more might choose to return to school. What we don't need for the next 3 drafts is to waste a first round pick on another defensive player. That should be in the what we don't need to do category. Now if Darnold, Allen or Rosen come out I hope the Jets take one.
He either has will rebound from the shellacking he took in college or he is permanently broken and it was a terrible reach by Macc. That is what we have been whining about for the last two years. I am beginning to think the latter.
What evidence makes you think the latter? All reports are he has improved from last year to otas and otas to mini camps.
Gotta have a completion percentage close to 65%, 4 touchdowns to 1 interception, and shatter every single season passing record. Expectations are too low for this team.
I just don't think OTA's is a good barometer. The players are in shorts and no tackling or hitting. I think everyone will be watching the preseason games. McCown should start the first game. Game 2 Hackenberg should start. Game 3 Petty should start. Game 4 the one that played the best in the three games starts the half and starts the season.
You know in many ways this is too simple, yet absolutely correct. It starts with displacing McCown and ends with winning games. There will be a couple of highly ranked QBs even if it isn't the great QB draft that many are predicting. Hack needs to win enough games to put them out of reach and make any lesser prospects seem less appealing. He needs to put the inexperienced O on his shoulders, run with it and do enough to make the team not draft a QB in the first round next year. If he can do that he's earned the right to be seen as the incumbent in 2018. If he can't do it then it comes down to how confident the FO really are in him. It would be a very brave man that didn't draft QB if the team are picking top 5.
If we already HAVE our QB on the team, are you happy with the rest of the roster? Or would you prefer another high draft (or two) before heading down our 5 Lombardis in a row lane?
