House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and multiple other people were shot at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia early Wednesday morning.

Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip and at least one other aide was also hit in the chest by a gunman with a rifle. Scalise is expected to survive.

The gunman was shot by U.S. Capitol Police, apprehended and taken to the hospital.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), however, told Fox News the gunman was dead. He also said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise's bleeding.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said he was leaving the practice when a man approached him and asked if Republicans or Democrats were on the field.

He said the encounter was "very, very strange."

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who was among the 15-25 people at the practice, said that if Capitol Police weren't there "it would have been a massacre."

Scalise, 51, is the House majority whip. He has represented Louisiana’s First Congressional District since 2008 and chairs the House Republican Study Committee. He is married with two children. Scalise's district includes New Orleans.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are aware of the incident.

Not the best way to make a point if that was the shooter's intent. Most likely a nutcase with a rifle exercising his 1st and 2nd amendment rights.

Bernie Sanders is Pro Gun Rights and always has been. This dates back to his time as a Senator in Vermont and the heavy support for gun rights in rural Vermont.

This got glossed over in the campaign because Sanders wasn't going to get more Democratic votes from the fact and Hillary was afraid he'd get more independent and pissed off GOP votes if it was made a point of focus.

I am aware of his stance on guns but his supporters are a good part not pro gun rights. I wasn't really being too serious with that post though, guess not the right time for lighthearted posts.

This shooting is Jared Loughner 2.0. Also I'm hearing commentary from conservatives that the shooting is a result of people advocating violence against government officials. They have a point.

I hope Scalise makes a full recovery, he didn't deserve to get shot.

Left-wing nutjob with a gun is no different than Right-wing nutjob with a gun. We should figure out how to keep guns out of the hands of nutjobs.

There is nothing you really can do. A person with no felonies, no hx of mental illness can easily procure any firearm they desire. These people committing mass shootings are not getting them from a black markets, they are sold to them legally because there is no reason not to.

When it comes to the right to own a weapon it really comes down to each individuals preference of what type of government they want to live in. One that takes more and more control over the general population for the "greater good" of the people or live in a government that has a reduced control over what the population can and cannot do and let them fend for themselves, ranging in certain extremes since nothing is black and white.

As of right now the country is still composed of a majority of people who believe in being able to own a personal fire arm. This may or may not change as new generations come and older ones phase out and new belief systems are instilled into new generations of children on what type of society they want to live in.

You forgot the link to the author's article who wrote that.

As for the matter at hand...I'm not shocked. If there's anything to be shocked about, it's that it took this long. Our politics have gotten to the stage of only out to screw over the other party, not getting work done. The Republicans will spite themselves just to piss off the Democrats and vice versa. The worst of it is they have the vast majority of America believing this is good for them, this shit tier system of a two-party government.

People are sick of Congress's inaction in getting actual work done besides dick-waving.

Anybody who is pissed off with a high-powered rifle is a bad thing. Anybody who is pissed off with an automatic weapon is a bad thing.

Once somebody triggers and starts shooting fire rate determines the casualties in most cases. Keeping weapons designed to kill people out of the hands of madmen should be a priority for everybody, regardless of your position on other forms of gun control.

Are you suggesting that a standard transmission would have saved lives in London and in time square a few weeks ago? I mean maybe the killer stalls before plowing through.

"Sources told ABC News that the primary weapon used in shooting was an SKS 7.62 assault-style rifle"

I am by no means a gun expert, so youll have to tell me if this is Automatic or not,..I think its semi-auto, but I really have no clue

The SKS is a semi-auto rifle, 10 round internal magazine.

It is a very nice shooting gun, decent accuracy, fun to shoot. These were the predecessor to the AK-47 rifles... both designed by brilliant Russians.
