Journalism is a good thing, it has certain standards; I'm not sure what you're looking for with that but at least one reported this: "He's made some progress," coach Todd Bowles said after practice. "We're putting in a lot of stuff every day and as they get to think about it and go through it, the more reps they get the better. Him, (Bryce) Petty, and McCown are making some progress." I like that McCown is making some progress at the age of 37; he should be ready by the time he hits 45.
When I was in the Marines in 2006, I got to do "security" at Chargers mini camp (basically did nothing, it was all for show). Anyways, I got to watch Rivers and Billy Volek launch incompletions all over the field. I do mean launch, I remember Scfries the punter getting drilled in the back when he was standing on the sideline. It happens pretty regularly. There was a few occasions where Rivers over/under threw LT in the flat and Cam Cameron chastised him every single time. On several occasions, he even got on the WRs for doing the wrong route. These reporters hardly know football, let alone being qualified enough to breakdown a pass play (even in shorts). It's fun to hear something being reported on, but we won't really know till preseason.
I just want facts with as little opinion in the article as possible. Quotes, stats, descriptions and I can form my own opinion. If I want to read a columnist piece I will. When I go to the beat reporters I just want the practice report.
Oh look another 20 articles about every single Hackenberg throw. I'll form my own opinion when I see him play, and wish him the best
Understood, and ideally that's the way it would be even if most of the readers don't understand the difference. The problem is that with decreasing readership some papers have merged duties and have what they now call reporter/columnists.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe hack does suck and they are reporting what they see? I mean who really cares anyways? if he is any good than he will show it on the field. My guess is the reason why you are squeezing your buttcheeks so hard is everyone with half a brain and one eye already knows he fucking sucks
You're right that they don't know football at all. But there really should be no excuse for it. These guys are fully absorbed into TC/OTAS/Practice a good 9 months out of the year. Even if you're a superficial follower of the sport , you're still gonna be tuned into the passing drills b.c that's the big story. It only takes watching about 2 sessions to realize that pass/catch sequences are far from a tight rehearsed game day level product.Doesn't matter who the OC,QB,Skill group is thats involved. All completions/incompletions/errant throws hell even some interceptions need to be taken w. a grain of salt. Sometimes the OC will tell a QB to force a ball to certain spot regardless of the coverage..the ball gets picked off or is an ugly incompletion. The offensive/defensive players pick up on each other's tendencies & can make players/units look bad when it isn't as cut n dry. There's alot of give & take between the coordinators to practice situational.Hell the DC might ask the OC to have the starting QB to throw one up for grabs to a specific DB b.c they want to test his ball skills. You just don't know. 11-on-11 scrimmages like the green-white game,Oklahoma drills, the 1-on-1 dog drills between OL/DL,& some of the 1-on-1 boundary match-ups is really where you can gain some perspective on where guys are at in their development. That said there are alot of inner workings that we just can't make heads or tails on.Now If a guy looks slow, drops alot of balls, is clearly out of position, has messy technique(Or vice versa..they look really athletic & on point) while this maybe alittle more of an inexact science you can actually take more from this than trying to analyze every single throw/stat during the session. At the end of the day thats why it's called practice. The Jets beat can't seem to get the TC dynamic right. They either just follow the big superficial stories & goofy happenings of the given practice, or they hone in on the advanced football portion in all the wrong places. The only ones close to getting it right are Cimini & Connor Hughes. Cimini is cynical but when he says a player looks good you can usually take it to the bank. Connor Hughes gets alittle too fan boy w. some of the long shots that give him the time of day. There is more narrative available regarding Jets TC than so the Giants..but the Giants beat writers do a fantastic job of covering TC..
So at the first day of mini camp open to the media , Hack went 11 of 14 today with one pick, one drop, one regular incompleted pass. The Pick was on a receiver running the wrong route as was the incomplete pass. Why isn't this news? It won't get the clicks and it doesn't fit " the sky is falling" so many on here absolutely love.
Meanwhile he reported Hack hit two reporters in practice, never saying he was hit. Now he wasn't hit but reached out to block a pass. Meanwhile he let's the story run, reposted after every Tuesday OTA so the storyline becomes Hack hit 6 reporters in practice one day.
Remember, the Cowboys didn't feel Dak was the ready, injuries forced them to go with him earlier than planned and he surprised. Also had a great o line and a hell of a team around him. If Hack starts from day 1, it man's he had a hell of a good camp and pre season. McCown will most likely start the first couple of games, but with his $ 125 k per game bonus, I don't think it will be many.
Rarely do QB depth chart power moves go exactly according to plan where the timing is perfect for all parties & w clean lines.Short of the draft day blockbuster trade to nab a guy or drafting him top 3 w the immediate understanding that the player is the day 1 starter,it never seems to go that way.Seems perfectly logical that Hack could outperform a 37 y.o journeyman & earn the job. Many believe that's what SHOULD happen if he's the real deal. For whatever reason we rarely see this occur in the NFL. Rather it comes as a result of some sort of extenuating circumstance like an injury or the org turning a blind eye to some level of the details to hand the keys to the youngster. There are too many layers to the position from a playing, coaching evaluating perspective for things to be that definitive. When a developing OT is ready to start..that is usually an undeniable & tangible in nature.QB is not the case.Once you get past technique, arm talent, classroom &running the offense you aren't gonna know for sure if the guy is the true answer until he actually plays several games. Veteran QBs like Mccown usually have 3-4 aspects from above nailed down so it makes the timing for the transition very tricky. All things being equal or close to within a competition it comes down to conviction from the head coach to decide when is right.
Not sure what makes you think I am "squeezing my buttcheeks" but ok. All I am saying is if I am reading a practice report I could do with out the opinions, reporters are supposed to report facts. I'm not reading these reports for opinion. I am quite capable of forming my own
all the reporters are saying Hack looked pretty good yesterday in minicamp. Also he's moved ahead of Petty in the no. 2 slot for reps. Must be these reporters can still see through the black eyes Hack gave em with his errant passes in OTAs
Good wish him the best, in the mean-time, how about keeping these specific opinions to yourself? They carry 0 value and this is a Hackenberg thread after all. At least people aren't creating 100 threads on 1 thing.
Sooooo what do the hack haters say if hack has...wait for it....back to back good days at camp. The sky will be falling I guess. I'm on the hack bus for now and because I don't want to see McCown see the field.
Someone (below) seems a little... Butthurt. "Hackenberg STILL can't hit open targets" ▪ Hackenberg is still only 22 years of age. ▪Hackenberg is still only a 2nd year kid. ▪Hackenberg has still not entered (let alone completed) only his 2nd NFL Training Camp. ▪ Hackenberg has still yet to enter his 2nd NFL Preseason. ▪ Hackenberg has still yet to complete only his 2nd NFL offseason. Now let me ask you... How's that for examples and/or for the usage of the word "still"? P.S: This Thread Title is a laughing stock of a joke. "STILL". He's still yet to be given an NFL chance. And that's just reality.
It's true these forum thingys are rarely driven by any sense of objectivity. The guy hasn't even stepped on the field yet and it's 9-1 for "He sucks."
