A couple of more guys get released and the "Tank" factor again comes into play - but how does anyone actually see this being accomplished? It seems to me Goodell and the boys on Park Avenue might have a problem with a team actually trying to lose games. Is it okay if the team is decimated before the season starts? How does a team actually go about intending to lose while making it look like they want to win? Do they need to get every player and coach on board as well as buy the silence of everybody in the organization, or just a few key players? Is the offense or the defense more important in organizing such a plan? What are the consequences if the plot is revealed?
The whole goal is that you actually don't try to lose you just don't try to get better. I mean, as long as we just play our regular game we have as much a chance as anybody. Look at the Penguins.... tanking saved their franchise not once, BUT TWICE!
I don't know the answer, but surely Woody the genius does! Remember when he was the only one in the NFL who knew how to utilize Tebow? Knew that grabbing Favre and jettisoning Chad Pennington would mean certain playoffs? (Of course co-geniuses Rex Ryan and Tony Sporano also contributed with Tebow) We are in good hands.
Just play all young guys and let the chips fall where they may NFL made it where you need a franchise QB or you might as well not even bother...so we're doing what we need to do to get one.
Well if you keep living in fear of picking a bust at QB and tread water with guys like Fitzpatrick as your QB youlll end up doing nothing anyway Might as well take a shot on the homerun and keep trying. If you can't find a great QB you need to be almost perfect in every other area to have a shot to make a deep run
This is it- the perfect reply- you win- why can't the moron fans understand this? The NFL itself, made the rules favor franchise QB so much, that anyone who does not try and land one, is doomed to 8-8 forever. Good for the Jets to finally accept the rules.
You make an excellent point. Mac should be soliciting Woody's advice on potential pickups that can help this team tank. He is the genius behind Tebow after all.
Tanking works by filling your team with inexperience not just in playing time and age but in winning ALL of our players do not know how to win and that's something you must drive yourself towards. We are in a perfect position to lose as many games but we have young and hungry players and if they are humans they want $$$ and they will have to perform for it. This is just the beginning we have to let it play out.
We're going to be mediocre with young guys over being mediocre with aging veterans. If we go 8-8 it can be seen as a positive but if we got 2-14 then you take the good from your season and add some top level talent in the draft. This is the best thing we've done in long time.
The poor drafting left this team with little talent and no depth at all. Tanking, youth movement, call it what you wish. The team has removed the underperforming over paid vets and will play a young fairly inexperienced roster. The kids are young, and hungry. Some will become the core of the team going forward, some will become depth and others won't last. Will they compile a lot of wins? Not likely but compared to the quit we saw last year, they should be more competitive and more exciting to watch. I'm expecting a ton of effort, hustle and all out play. The few vets on the roster should be motivated by the young players effort That's what we should expect from this roster. There will be no intentional loosing, No secret agenda to not win. The players come from programs with a history of success. They didn't make the NFL by not competing. This only a good thing if Woody has the patience to ride it out. (Think 2013 when a similar movement began). It is not a one year process and the next 2 drafts will be key. Can't give up draft picks for rental players , can't break the bank on free agents. Follow the script and by late 19, 2020 this team should have lots of young, home grown talent and really be ready to complete long term. Not just for a short window. So many here have been mocking the Browns but they are building a very solid roster after jettisoning their older veterans and are going to have a very solid team in another year or two. They all ready have some very good young talent, had a great draft and bunch of picks and cap space next year. I know it's not easy, especially after all the time since the last, first, only Superbowl win but if patient. The payoff will be worth it. We have lived the alternative for decades. 8-8 , 10-6 , 5-11, 8-8,8-8, 11-6,4-12. Let's get to where 10 wins is a disappointment. The Pat's are making a last push. Should last a few more years, the Bills are still playing the futile game we were stuck with for so long and Miami, while talented have the Ireland back loaded contracts that will come due. I'm sure many will disagree but that's what the forum is for. I could be completely wrong but it's my opinion and I am optimistic about the future. Cautiously optimistic.........
Jeff CapelliniVerified account @JCapWFAN 11h11 hours ago It’s not that a total rebuild isn’t a good idea. It is. It’s that there is not a #Jets fan alive who honestly believes they’ll get it right I sadly agree with the above tweet.
In football this is not how you go about rebuilding your franchise. Look at some of the past SB champs. They got lucky. Bledsoe getting injured , enter Brady. Trent Green getting injured and Kurt Warner has one of the greatest single seasons in NFL history. No free agent will even look at the Jets. Expecting 53 20 year olds to show promise is asking alot. Then the final thought process in this rebuild, Todd Bowles is still here. He is not creative enough or talented enough to fix things or coach up rookies and 1st year guys. When we get a star out of this bunch they will leave as soon as possible.
"Tanking" is just a media creation, stir the hornets nest, get everyone talking. Neither Harris nor Decker ever won anything for the Jets, so no matter how great you think their "character" is (What's "character"? How does that work?), you might as well start fresh. Ron
I totally agree. Although Harris and Decker were great team mates, and I wish we could do more for the loyal good character guys, that's simply not how this business works. Any franchise that is consistently successful, does not over-pay for aging players no matter the loyalty/character factor. It's fine to do this as long as it is done in a business-like fashion (like it has to this point). If there are leaks about "this player is a jerk" or "that player wouldn't do what we asked of him" it becomes drama. I liked Harris, but it was his time. The team is keeping it buttoned up, the way it should be.
Wow you're way over thinking it, bro. You cut your older players and leaders, you play young unproven players and you either find home grown all pro players or you suck balls and end up at the top of the draft. That's it. If anyone asks you say "We're rebuilding". There's no high level nfl politics scheme at play here.
I agree with you. The key questions are QB and general depth. The DL is a strong point. The secondary should be much improved with the two new safeties and the other CB they've signed. The biggest question on the defense is really the LBs - Lee should be OK and Jenkins should be OK. Mauldin is a big question mark and its not clear whether he can be the edge rusher they need or not. Last year he was injured and he played poorly, possibly because of the injury. Do they stick with a 3-4 (in which case they need another starting LB and I really hope it doesn't turn out to be Davis) or move to a 4-3 (which might be a better fit for their current personnel - so that we won't have to see Richardson playing LB, assuming they don't trade him). The offensive line should be much improved, with strong guard play, and decent tackle and center play. Running backs are a strength (if they can stay healthy). The young WRs have some talent, but need to develop - cutting decker was about giving them the playing time to develop. TEs may not be the complete zero they've had in the past. The key question is do they have a QB on the roster who can develop into a starting calibre NFL QB or not. I don't see this as a desire to tank at all. This is simply all about developing young talent and, frankly, they have a lot more of it than they had when Idzik was canned and Macs was brought in. Are they making the playoffs this year? Unless one of the young QBs substantially outperforms expectations, I'd say no. This is probably a 6-8 win team next year, but with a lot of young players could still be a fun team to watch. One last thing to remember is that they will have a huge amount of money to spend in 2018 to fill whatever holes the young players leave and to add depth. If one of the young QBs shows that they can play then 2018 might be a very promising year for the jets.
Right? This team looks historically bad coming up on paper...But no one wants to see this team go 0-16 unless you care more about securing the guarantee #1 overall pick. But knowing our luck, there will be two teams at 0-16 and we lose the #1 overall and most likely Darnold over tiebreakers Please carefully orchestrate this tank across to the finish line in 2017-18
