I know,But why not right?I keep seeing all these memory threads from a bygone era.Lets keep the trend of happy thoughts alive!!
the guy was the epitome of looking like Tarzan and playing like Jane. I wasn't a believer when we drafted him, however I didn't think he would bust as badly as he did.
He looked completely clueless. I mean, just look at that photo. How the hell did professional scouts look at him and not see that total and complete absence of clue?
I loved the kid coming out of Ohio State. But then he wen't from 86 tackles (with 30.5 being for loss behind the L.O.S) along with 22 1/2 sacks during his final two years with Ohio State... to only 34 total tackles and 0 QB sacks throughout his 3 years as a Jet (45 games played/5 starts). With that said, I don't hate Vernon Gholston. I never have and never will hold any type of hatred for a player like that. If anything I'm really not sure what happened to him (as a person) once on an NFL level because he had all the talent in the world as a pass rushing prospect coming out. And then some. A lack of heart? A lack of toughness? A lack of desire or work ethic? A loss of passion or love for the game? A lack of a motor? A lack of effort? I'm not really sure. I just feel like as if something were bothering that kid upstairs (mentally). It's easy to say "he just sucked" but i strongly disagree because I seen his overall pass rushing talents and abilities while on Ohio State's football field first hand. I still to this day. Believe something was bothering Vernon Gholston emotionally (while on the next level). Something in which he kept bottled up inside and never decided to share with the public.
after this I might have to start a few threads myself,,,maybe your fondest Blair Thomas ,Memory or Johnny Lam Jones myth or legend ?
He wouldn't be the first player to get lost in spending what was it, 90 million. You may be right that something happened to him, but it could just be he wanted to go enjoy his money and didn't care to get hurt.
I remember him being the consensus pick in a shit draft. Not anywhere near our worst draft pick ever, no matter what the beat writers would have you believe.
It was IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS that he was not an NFL player. It was PAINFULLY... IMMEDIATELY... OBVIOUS. And my strongest memories are of people on this board crying about negativity and insisting we just had to be patient with him, that he was a rookie, give him a chance, that he was still a young player, give him a chance, that our new coach Rex would light a fire under him, give him a chance. Yikes.
My memory is the reports that our scouts were outraged at the pick as they were adamantly against the pick with Mangini and his giant ego insisting on the pick. The big disappointment was Tammy caving into the coaches wishes which became a pattern with picks in later years where he chose the coaches picks against the advice of the scouting department most notably Sanchez.
This. It was soo weird with him. I know 120lb from my freshman football team that had more of motor than him. It was like he lost half his speed and forgot how to play football out there. Mangini nor Rex were able to get an ounce of effort out of him.
