After years of watching QB play the one metric that always stood out was TD to int ratio. Look at Brady and look at Prescott. Says it all I believe.
What do you say to this QB? His rookie stat line is as following: Games started: 11 155/293, 1749 Yds 9 TD/18 INT Fumbles lost: 3 This one was a year younger than Petty when he entered the league, FYI. And again, FYI, his stat lines for year 2 looks like this: Games started: 15 226/399, 2579 Yds 11 TD/18 INT Fumbles lost: 4
That's the thing. No doubt Petty needs to improve massive to have a shot. But he HAS a shot. Anyone who says they know what he is or will be is bullshiting.
Troy Aikman. Good post! How about this stat too: John Elway (1983) 11 games; 123-259 for 1663 yards; 7 TD; 14 INT; 54.9 passer rating. Only one season with a passer rating over 90 (1993). I guess sometimes you have to show some patience.
The team was terrible last year. Petty was terrible in his limited opportunities last year, but I don't think terrible enough to quit on. It seems unlikely he will turn into a franchise QB, but I would give him one more year. We will see how he does this year. Hopefully another big leap.
Yeah. That's the thing. This fanbase would give YEARS to MARK FUCKING SANCHEZ. And now, after 4 starts, they say Petty is a career backup. [Hello? Just what the fuck are you smoking?]
Good post Zach. Aikmans college stats weren't anything to make you think he would be the player he became. It's funny that Oklahoma won the National Title after he was injured and out for the year. He's also a classic example of players taking 3 years before reaching their NFL potential. If the Cowboys gave up on him after his second year ... So many posters evaluate players after a year .. or even before they play an actual NFL Regular season game lol. Airman was an example that a QB can improve his accuracy/ball placement, decision making and completion percentage. Year-GP-Att--Com--Pct---Yds--TD---Int--Rat 1989-11--293--155--52.9--1,749---9--18--55.7 1990-15--399--226--56.6--2,579--11--18-66.6 1991-12--363--237--65.3--2,754--11--10-86.7 1992-16--473--302--63.8--3,445--23--14-89.5
I just don't get how Petty can get that label in his second season getting minimal reps up until his starts. As for Sancheez .. Probably because he was on the team that went to back to back championship games .. always waiting for that light to turn on. Especially after the 2011 season (his third year) where he was supposedly on the up.
Stat-wise, if the cowboys HC at that time wasn't Jimmy Johnson, probably Aikman wouldn't even have been drafted by Cowboys. Jimmy Johnson knew Troy over the years - he tried to recruit Aikman coming out of highschool [Aikman rejected Johnson] then when Aikman transferred out of Oklahoma, Jimmy tried again. [And was rejected again.] Jimmy got Aikman on his third try. It's highly likely that Jimmy Johnson knew, well ahead of the time, what he was getting out of his QB. In other words - unless the HC gets to have some uncanny ability to see a talent [ be it through luck or whatever] drafting a QB is always going to be a crapshoot.
Interesting, I didn't know Johnson and Aikman had that past. Drafting period is as much of a crapshoot as the War Rooms and CS make it. Constant scouting and research identifies the talent and more recently, the character of a player. Also just as important as aquiring the player, is developing the talent. Many a talented prospect has been either neglected or flat out handled poorly. Hopefully we don't make the same mistake(s).
While I agree with your post, it is fair to point out that the Jets FO really let Sanchez down and contributed greatly to his demise in their quest for the greatest defense ever. Hopefully this FO is smarter and sets up the young QBs to only have themselves to blame if they fail. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Agree, in addition all the QB's previously mentioned in above posts were 1st round picks. When a QB is drafted in the first round there is a considerable investment of capital. It behooves the team making the choice to acquire as much support as it can to protect it's investment. In short, it is in the team's best financial interests to be patient and do everything it can to help the QB succeed by trying to build a team around the QB strengths. No such investment in QB's selected after the 1st round. Teams can afford to take a "if he makes it, fine" attitude without needing to expend the money in support. It may not seem fair to a guy like Petty, but the onus of proof is on him. I'm sure the Cowboys didn't draft Prescott with the idea of building a team around him. It just turned out, he was able to perform better than anyone expected.
LMAO....totally agree with this point, but ironically, I also think Mark Sanchez is the REASON half of them are like this now. Its ALL part of the JETS experience !
I don't know how ANYBODY can tell ANYTHING about Petty given that way the entire fucking team played last year - on BOTH sides of the ball.
