Did not say that. But pressure from talking heads doesn't active the panic button and have GMs alter their big boards over night. He liked Hack, he did not succumb to pressure from the media and then select someone that many wouldn't/didn't approve of.
That was last years draft gtf over it for god's sake man, I would love it if Hack came out firing this season, one it would shut a lot of moaners up and two we would have a QB to get behind, yes it may very well be unlikely but we can't keep crying about his draft round a year later, it isn't going to change is it
If Jets fans could do that, this board wouldn't exist, Christ there people on here still whining about drafting O'Brien over Marino!
There's a big difference imo. Trump is the President. He can pretty much do or say whatever he wants. Mac cannot. He has to report to Woody, and unless things have changed in terms of the organization structure, Mac can't even tell Bowles what to do It's also pretty obvious when something is Trump's idea. It's much less clear with the Jets as to whether some move is Mac's idea, Bowles' idea and Mac is doing it to support Bowles either of his own volition or because Woody wants it that way, whether Mac and Bowles were in agreement that was what needed to happen, or if it was something Woody said he wanted done. Sometimes one of our local beat writers will have some inside info and spill the beans, but much of the time, we are only left to speculate. Also, I was trying to point out the very real difference in approach. Their first two years, the moves that Mac and/or Bowles made were in pursuit of making the playoffs while undergoing a competitive rebuild. Now it seems pretty clear that they've abandoned the competitive rebuild and are seeking to rebuild the right way. IMO that's only fair. One cannot judge the moves that the Jets make now in the same light as Mac and Bowles' first two years.
With personnel the buck stops with the GM. I know if we were good you'd be praising Mac for his moves and you'd say it's ridiculous to argue he doesn't deserve credit because maybe they were really Bowles or Woody's idea.
Yes, the buck stops with him and he gets the credit or blame, but that doesn't mean it's the reality.
I don't get this theory. Everyone knew Paxton Lynch wasn't falling to us in the second. He was projected as high as the mid-teens. And then he panicked and took Hackenberg over Cook & Cardale Jones? He also had 20 something picks to come up with a contingency plan and still panicked? I don't buy it. He wanted Hackenberg all along at that spot.
That board is set up for that night weeks in advance, with maybe some tweaks as draft day gets closer. That was definitely his plan all along.
You're right. For all I know the reality could be worse. Mac might have had some really horrible ideas that Bowles talked him out of. Since I don't know what the reality is, I go by what the Jets personnel moves have been, and they aren't impressive.
Right, which is why a lot of Jets fans were calling for Mac's head after he passed on Lynch in the first. I remember it on draft day, people were calling for him to be fired after not using our first pick on a QB. Newspapers the next day were calling him inept for not taking a QB. I don't care if he was in love with Hackenberg or not. Obviously he was but it's my opinion that he felt he needed to get a QB immediately to save the draft and he was scared Hack would be gone after the second round thus he wouldn't get a QB like everyone who wanted him to be fired after the first round wanted. So he jumped a round or two early and took him in the second round.
Yeah that's what I was getting at. There was no panic button hit. I just wish we waited a round and then went for it and there'd be half the pressure on both him and the organization to make him a success.
That couldn't have been his plan, everyone here knows the Jets don't draft anyone in the 2nd round that is good and that they want to keep. Can you just imagine if Hack turns out to be pretty good. The people who already know Hack is a bust, along with those who know the Jets never draft anyone good in the 2nd round, all their heads will explode in unison.
I think teams rated Hackenberg higher than we think they did. Everyone likes to act like they knew he wasn't going until the 5th round. The Patriots were rumored to want him, and I'd imagine the Texans take him in the third if we didn't take him in the second. Everyone takes the approach with the kid that Maccagnan thinks he's smarter than everyone and reached badly for him. Maybe there was a lot more buzz around him in scouting circles than we know. I saw him rated by several draft sites just below Connor Cook as the 5th quarterback on their boards. I'm back and forth on it myself sometimes though. I just hope we find out this year what he is.
Do you have some links to said newspapers? Maybe I have a poor memory. But I don't remember all of New York calling for the guys head after not taking Paxton Lynch. After hearing multiple pressers and interviews on WFAN with Maccagnan, he never struck me as a guy that's worried about his job or not calm under pressure.
Yeah, link please. I don't remember that either.....Except for the few typical naysayer crybabies on here. Doesn't matter tho. There's no way in Hell that the war room responded in their ensuing pick to any outside media reaction to them not taking Lynch in the first. That's ridiculous.
