I've seen only a few posters who want an out and out tank. Many, if not most, do believe that the Jets won't go far this season and it's going to be a bad year, but that doesn't mean that it's a tank job. The Jets' primary purpose this season is to develop their youngsters and see who can help them going forward. That especially applies to Hack and Petty. Wins and losses mean nothing except for draft position. Unless McCown does start and has a miraculous resurgence of health and playing ability, if the Jets win 6 games this season it will be because either Hack or Petty show that they have what it takes to be the Jets' QB of the future. I expect them to win 3-4 games, less if Bowles is as bad a HC as many of us think.
This whole concern of McCown impacting our draft position or thinking he is giving us "the best chance to win" needs to remember his most recent body of work is a 2-20 record last three years. This who are of the tanking crowd should be jumping all over him starting the whole season. I'm hoping hack wins out myself but I find it hard to believe Mac or Bowles thinks McCown is the best option hands down.
While I like Hack, he was given quite a bit of slack due to the supposedly "QB & offensively-inept" coaching regime of James Franklin that replaced Bill O'Brien at Penn St. while Hack was an underclassman. The problem is that doesn't hold as much water given how Trace McSorley lit it up this year at Happy Valley: 29 TDs / 8 Ints / 156.9 rating. McSorley finished the 2016 regular season throwing 4 TDs against Michigan State, 4 TDs against Wisconsin and he followed that up with another 4 TDs against Southern California in the Rose Bowl. McSorley's only problem that game was that he was going up against the NYJ's #1 draft pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Oh, he has a plan. But it is the wrong plan. His problem is that it should not be his plan. He is a rich noodnik who loves football. He can never hire anyone worthy of the title. His plan should be that elusive person's plan. But he cannot find him because he does not know what to look for. Parcells ran at the sight of him
Right. And those Cowboys had the Mt Rushmore of offensive lines, a Hall of Fame RB and a Hall of Fame QB. Some pretty good receivers too. Heck, they had the best talent. If Woody's plan s to get the best talent who would be against it? Woody is just some primogeniture raised spoiled brat who does not know people or personnel
Fans have been wanting this team to tank since the Mariota days. It's going to be a tough year, but losing games on purpose never really amounts to anything at the end of the day. Colts tanked for Luck, didn't really field a good team around him and now he's one of the highest paid QBs in the league and will absolutely rot on the colts. The purpose no doubt is to develop the players and try and win each and every week. I want to see better game-planning, execution, etc from the coaching and the players. I see this as a 4 win team and if Hack throws 30 interceptions at least we'll know he's not the answer and the Jets can move on. 4 wins can still get you a great QB in the next draft. It's all about how Hack plays, I think if he were to play very well, then the team might reach 7 or 8 wins. Then you build on that momentum because you aren't tanking, you are creating that very foundation for the future. This is the year to evaluate the QB position in full. Evaluating the coaching staff. Wins won't full measure it but preparation / execution will. Sometimes you can execute and play well and still not be good enough to win.
If by "Fans have been wanting this team to tank since the days of Mariota" you mean many or the majority of fans, I'm sorry, I don't believe that is accurate. This is the first year where I have seen more than a couple of posters say that they want the Jets to tank. This year, many fans are talking about undergoing a rebuild, but not tanking. A few are saying the Jets should tank, but most of us are simply stating that as you said, this is a season to go with youth, see who can help them going forward, try to develop the young players, and evaluate the CS. I agree that wins alone won't measure or give the Jets the answers they need regarding the CS and team. Schedule and luck all play a part in that. What's more important is seeing if the team is prepared to play each and every week, seeing if they are focused, disciplined, play smart and tough and don't beat themselves with mental errors and penalties. It's seeing if Bowles can make better adjustments and prevent any of the distractions and problems that plagued last season. It's seeing if he can make better decisions regarding clock management and game management and not being so conservative. It's seeing if he goes with Hack or Petty or tries to start McCown for the whole season. I think what most of us are hoping for is that most of the young players will develop, that the team will cut way down on the mental errors, be prepared to play each week, play hard, and hustle to give us some hope going forward, but that they still won't win many games so that they will be in good position to get one of the top QBs in the 2018 draft. Some of us hope that Bowles will show marked improvement so that we are able to maintain some stability and not have to tear everything down again and start over, while some are hoping that Bowles will be fired and that Mac will be given the opportunity to hire his own HC, while a smaller number of fans hope that both Bowles and Mac will be fired.
I think it would be a mistake for the FO to paint this season as anything other than a rebuild. Lowering the bar is the way to go here as the fans are already disillusioned with the direction of this team and if it appears that 2017 is another money grab, that will be a pretty deep hole to climb out of for the organization. Fans for once can not only live with, but expect a rebuilding year. Macc and TB would be wise to give the fans what they want this year.
I'm all for giving Hack his chance - assuming they think he can be the guy. But they should also draft a QB this year if they see one who could be a FQB AND capable of starting this year if Hack & Co. can't cut it. If Hack proves himself, GREAT!, then you keep this year's QB and let him develop and if Hack falters or gets hurt, you have a quality guy to go to.
The Jets have had two consecutive blind squirrels as owners. Woody has yet to find his acorn. Unfortunately, fans are stuck with ownership
It was not too long ago that the Jets had been in the playoffs 6 out of 10 years after Parcells left town, which is by far the best performance since the late 60's. The hate for the last 6 years is a real thing but ignoring what Woody managed to get done from '01 to '10 is kind of shorting the man. I do think we need a change of direction now to get back on track but I don't think Woody has ever been the terrible owner that he is portrayed as by his detractors. I think he was a moderately successful owner who got caught on the tracks in front of the Pats Express train. It's not clear anybody would have done a lot better. We do need to rebuild at this point and get on the right track for when the Pats finally start to slow down. That's going to be the real test. It's not the next year or two Woody will be judged on in the end or even the last 6. It's the next decade when things start to even out in the AFC East. Is that the Jets decade or did we stumble through it, never really a factor as somebody else rose to the top?
The point is that we are stuck with Woody. He is not replaceable and I don't think he has the smarts to get us a guy who can put this organization on the right track. Even when we were going to the playoffs i never felt we would reach a Super Bowl. Rex came close, but the first time we just kind of fell into it. The second time we were better but he came out totally unprepared against Pitt. Those were fun years. I never felt we were a powerhouse. The Parcells year was the only year I went into the playoffs thinking ring. I have watched this team for 57 years or whatever. We have probably been really good in two of Ewbanks years, one of Michaels, one of Parcells, and one of Rex. Frankly, that is pathetic. And I just feel that our last two owners have been clueless about hiring. Hess raved about landing Rich Kotite. Woody hired Herm--a bastion of mediocrity. Owners rarely change. I do not judge Woody. I just have never liked him. I do not quesiton his IQ. I seriously question his ability to hire. And Hess---he was a nice man. Enough said. Clearly, I have wasted my time rooting for this franchise. Being a fan, I could not help myself. So I go on. But I can no longer conceal my disgust. To me, Bowles is another Kotite. Macc, the jury is out because drafts are like that. But he is trending negative. And as for the command structure, it is a joke. I will never dislike Macc's performance as much as TBs becaus I firmly believe he should have been allowed to pick his own coach. Whatever. I will still be watching the games on Sunday.
So far in this regime the GMing has been questionable and the coaching has been questionable. The first will always lead to the second. People need to rethink their assumptions. Parcells left two teams because he wanted full control of the operation including player acquisition. In both cases he reasonably assumed that he was being judged as a coach at least in part on the work of the GM getting the groceries.
It does hold water. Players are different. They have different skill sets, different mental makeups, and prefer one style of play or offense over another. Some people are like oil and water. They try to get along or see things the same, but just can't/don't. Hack did very well in O'Brien's offense, McSorley may not have. Just because McSorley did well in Franklin's offense and Hack didn't doesn't mean that much unless they were on the team at the same time with the same players around them, playing the same schedule, and even then, all it really shows for certain is that McSorley's talents and mental makeup work well in Franklin's offense and Hack's didn't.
Nonsense. Utter nonsense. Parcells had full control with the Jets and still left the job undone. He was terrible at buying the groceries. You need to drop this nonsense. It isn't the first time you've said it, and it's still wrong.
I totally disagree with your comments regarding Woody. He didn't get anything done except frustrate Jets fans and continue the same old crap.
1-15 to 9-7 to 12-4 makes your argument wrong. Think about it. Vinny's achilles and no backup was on Parcells. Keyshawn coming due at just the wrong time and wanting franchise WR money was not. Keyshawn was not Parcells draft.
I didn't say he wasn't a great HC. He was, but he sucked at buying the groceries. Go look up the stiffs he drafted. He won with older, expensive vet FAs, not with young talent he developed.
my perfect world? - Hack turns out to be the real deal and the Jets go on to flip the tables on the NFC East and the NFL in general (with a couple of SB wins thrown in for good measure) or, - Hack turns out not to be the real deal but the Jets (shrewdly standing pat in 2017) secure the draft rights to Sam Darnold in 2018 who turns out be the real deal, etc., etc., etc...
