Trading players is a very tricky move and must be well thought out by our GM. IMO you trade players at the point of max return. Either 1- A key player in his prime that had a good to great year but just does not fit the system moving forward 2- A top player with a terrific performance but approaching the knee of the curve regarding longevity. A move NE is a master at executing Mo, IMO fits into none of the above scenarios. We would be trading at a major disadvantage. The real question from my very rudimentary understanding is this? What scheme suits him best, gives us max performance and how does that impact the other key players in the DL? If the answer is the 3-4 then why in God green earth we let go of our stud NT and kept less impactful players, say Revis? or Richardson? Is TB able to come up with a front DL set of schemes that cleverly optimizes the talent of Mo, the Lion and Richardson? If not then how do we build and change for the future. Damned it all....if there is anything I hate more than poor play is to watch talent wasted by playing them out of position. Trading players with potential after a mediocre year is a bad investment, but shuffling our better players and sub optimizing their capacities is a death spiral not just for them but for the entire team. atop
"According to the media, some of Rickey’s last words to Ralph Kiner were, “We finished last with you, we can finish last without you.” 1953 Need I say more?
Right, and then you figure out how to pay Leonard Williams an appropriate salary, which might be 2/3's what Mo is making right now if he's REALLY GOOD - BETTER THAN MO after we've been paying Mo like he was a mid-level QB for 4 years. This is such a simple proposition that it's hard to understand how Mo's deal got vetted by management in the first place.
The thing that has me frustrated with the Jets right now is that we're playing Checkers, one move at a time, without understanding how the moves all relate to each other over the seasons. The Pats are playing Go and they are so far ahead of us on the board that we're never going to catch up unless we start playing Go also. That means no more big money contracts, period. There's no big money contract that will solve what is wrong with the Jets. All they will do is to make other players want bigger contracts. You think Mo wasn't watching Revis like a hawk all those years, figuring out how he was going to get his? You think he didn't know that the Jets folded to Revis a couple of times after hold outs and gave him what he wanted? You think he didn't know that the Jets didn't understand that franchise CB's don't exist? He certainly thought he could sell himself as a franchise 3-4 DE by holding out and not budging off of his numbers and that's what he did. And then we folded and gave him his money, just like we'd suggested we would by what we did with Revis. Leo Williams is watching Mo like a hawk. And he's watching the Jets also.
The patriots are playing a different game because they have the luxury of having the goat qb covering their deficiencies. we forget that when they had brady on a rookie contract they had a solid team with some big time players. to suggest we can follow how they are operating now without taking into account how they arrived here is a tunnel vision view. We can let every good draft pick go to a higher bidder every time they ccme up for free agency but that will just lead to a weak team around whatever potential qb we finally find. that won't lead us to where the patriots are now.it will keep us right where we have been.
The Jets are plagued by an evil spirit. Or possibly their owner does not know how to get good people and give them the authority they need to operate.
After Leonard Williams fell into our laps how hard was it realize that a very expensive Mo Wilkerson was more expendable than ever and that a fireplug Damon Harrison was now more valuable to the team overall? How hard was it to realize that locking Snacks up at 40% of what it cost to lock up Mo was the better move in the long-term? The Jets might have been able to lock up Snacks at $6M a year for 5 years with $20M guaranteed in the spring of 2015. Instead they locked up Mo to a contract higher than any other 3-4 DE in the NFL despite having two other premium 3-4 DE's on hand. Lunacy. Sheer lunacy. And we got what we deserved when Mo had the big off-season which made the deal look terrible instead of just bad. We need better than terribad deals out of management but lately that's all we're getting.
The season before Snacks became a FA (the season he was rated the top NT in football) both Mo and Sheldon went on and on how Snacks in the middle makes their jobs SO much easier. According to Mo, having no worries or even responsibilities in the middle of the field freed him up to attack the QB. And Snacks demanding dbl teams and shutting down the run on 1st and 2nd downs gave Mo and Sheldon a lot of 3rd and longs to feast on. But that's all gone now that our brilliant GM decided to let Snacks walk so he could keep all 3 DE's. Snacks, buy the way, was voted the best player on defense by the Giants (for what it's worth). Snacks was a walk on of the Rex Ryan era, and if Macc had recognized the benefit of having Snacks in the middle, then Macc could have signed Snacks to a long term deal for pennies. Think back to how much money Macc had to spend when he came in. Macc wasted $50M on Reivs while true talent like Snacks walked away. Pathetic.
we need better drafts out of management. the fact that mo was even considered to be worthy of an extension goes against the trend the jets have had. i'm not even going to address the knee jerk reaction of calling mo's deal "terribad" considering the injury he came off and the way it is structure to make him an easy cut if it continues
$19M a year for a DE who is not a big sacker is terribad by any definition of the word and that's what Mo's deal is for the next 4 years.
Oh but let's sign Snacks, a 2 down lineman with 0 pass rush productivity that never played on passing downs. 10 m a season. Nope. Mo will bounce back and as FJF as indicated the contract is an easy out after next year should things go sour.
The age old quandary: is it better to pay Mo more than he is worth, or trade him for less than you think he is worth. Trust the jets to do the wrong thing
I remember when Mo was up for the extension and pounding the table to trade him (and resign Snacks). Everyone else seemed to be chanting the Mantra that Snacks was nothing special and only looked good because Mo and Sheldon "made him look better than he was". When I suggested that Snacks made either of them look better people were laughing at me. With that said, then and now I still believe that Sheldon Richardson is the most talented player on our team.
Don't worry we are still laughing. It takes more then talent to thrive in this league and Sheldon lacks the mental acumen to be a leader. He will be traded and we will open up 8M in cap space.
I'm 100% with you on all 3 of these and was back then also. It takes balance to be a great team and Snacks was part of a balanced defense at a reasonable salary. Mo is not at the highest salary in the game at his position.
Ok, in order: Snacks had 2.5 sacks for the Giants last year, so not zero pass rush productivity. He had a few for the Jets over the years also. The Jets asked him to stay at home and he did that and they had great run defenses as a result because he is a great run-stuffing NT, a fact that got completely lost in the calculations somehow. Second, it wouldn't have been $10M a year in the off-season right after 2014. He'd have been signable much cheaper than that, albeit with real guarantees involved. The Jets were too busy throwing a huge amount of money at other people to notice. Third, I don't care if Mo gets 12 sacks this year, which I doubt. He needs to get 19 sacks to justify 19M, which is more than 10% of the cap. Period. It was a terribad deal when it was made and it remains a terribad deal and unless Mo turns into the second coming of Bruce Smith, who is the only franchise 3-4 DE in NFL history (lost 4 SBs), it will remain a terribad deal. Great teams make good decisions. Bad teams make bad ones and making a bad decision with a trapdoor out doesn't make it a good decision after the fact it just makes it a bad decision with a trapdoor out.
I dont understand how u trade a known for an unknown. The draft is a gamble. We drafted Mo...he is a very good player...you have to pay to play. When players earn big contracts get rid of them??? We will forever be watching SB3 replays if the organization did that all the time. Mo will bounce back this season...i believe he will be worth his contract...again.
