I do not watch much college. When the draft comes I think of positions we need. BPA is a mystery to me a lot.
I think your accurate when you say SR is a better player then Mo. Maybe because TB wanted to have his best players on the field.... or maybe it was because the OLB they selected were not playing well - which they weren't until the last quarter of the year or maybe as you say TB is clueless. The fact that he is "unstable coupled with immaturity" is like walking with nitro on glass with bear feet. Its only a matter of time before he implodes.... he needs to go and unfortunately his value is not just predicated on playing out of position but aloe the foregoing....
I disagree with the idea that Richardson is a better player than Mo. SR may be more athletic and faster/quicker, and he may have a better motor, but Mo gets better pressure on opposing QBs and is equally stout vs. the run.
BPA blows chunks but it's a reality in a draft-based system. If there was an OT remotely as good as the defensive players in this draft he would be a no-brainer at 6 but there isn't. QB even more so but again not available. WR, TE, both priorities but not available at *6*. S is the only spot that the Jets absolutely need that might be available at 6 and it's a lower impact position than a true pass rusher. It sucks but it's the reality. I'm hoping the Jets can work a trade down and match value and need and get some extra picks. That's what a rebuilding team really wants to do when the BPA's at its slot are at positions of strength.
Not that it means anything but if the Steelers had dumped Terry Bradshaw the first 4 seasons he looked like a bust they'd never have gotten 4 rings. Geno could have worked out here but it would have taken fans with the patience of saints to make that happen. Only a few franchises have had those in abundance when they needed them.
for the record, the new drug policy states that if an offender is clean for two years, they are discharged from the program this summer marks two years for sheldon
I am definitely prefering to move on from SR. He is a cancer and a hot head who just makes alot of poor choices. But...The jets can get out of Mo's contract and save 17 million after next year. He underperformed considerably last year and apparently was playing hurt. He could get better or play just as poorly. If, I'm saying if the jets get offered like a 5th or worse for SR should we keep him? The benefit is he is playing in a contract year. He should be playing at a high level and you would think keep his mouth shut. If Mo sucks it up we can rid ourselves completely of Mo and his huge contract and reward SR with a new contract if he figures out how to get more productive and is more of a team player. It would be a big contract but Mo will be off the books. Just food for thought.
interesting. Richardson is a better player than Jernigan though. If dealing Richardson only meant swapping 20 slots in round 3, I'd just keep him and see how the season played out. For a conditional 4th, with a chance to be a 2nd, I'd deal him in a sec though..
Good post/points. For the same reasons, Jets fans shouldn't be so anxious to write off Petty and Hack.
No, don't keep him under any circumstances. Why should they? This season isn't about how many wins they can accumulate. It's about building for the future. Determining who can help them, creating a team identity, creating team unity, developing young players and building chemistry. Why would they want to keep a cancer and hot head who is not in their long-term plans? Why would they keep him when they need cap space desperately, and trading him can give them $8 million instantly? I'd take a bag of kicking tees and deflated footballs for him. With the 5th round pick they could conceivably find at least a decent backup or STs player, and maybe even a starter. In addition to getting rid of his negative attitude and greed (which we don't want poisoning other players' minds), and gaining the cap space, it will free up reps for some of the young players like Obioha and Thomas, who showed flashes last season in practice/TC. It's addition, by subtraction. I also think that Mo will bounce back in a big way. He has always been very productive. Bowles said that Mo was fighting through the injury last season and that it takes 18 months to recover from that kind of injury. If he doesn't he'll be gone, but I think he will.
Smith killed himself from the minute he was drafted and walked across the stage like the asshole that he is. After that everything went straight downhill.
Remember though that we don't have the same perpetual lease on Petty and Hack that the Steelers had on Bradshaw. That's one thing that is different. The owners had all the power back then and the Steelers could hold Bradshaw whether he wanted to be held or not. Both Petty and Hack have half the say now. If they want to leave they'll leave and all the Jets can do is to throw too much money at them to try to stop them from going, assuming they want to keep them.
I don't think either would leave as long as the Jets are giving them an opportunity to play/succeed. Now if they start McCown for the whole season, then yeah, I wouldn't blame them for leaving, but hopefully they will have some loyalty to the team that drafted them.
Actually, what it would've taken was a coaching staff that new how to make use of his talents, and a GM that knew how to surround him with the right talent. The fans would've been patient if they saw steady progress.
Bradshaw had 6 TD and 24 Int his rookie year. The next year 13 and 22. Saints, it would have taken Saints in this market and we don't have any. Put Bradshaw on the Eagles instead of the Steelers and the first PA Championship would have been in 2005.
