Unless he fixes his mechanics he will look as bad as he did in the preseason last year. Sitting him didn't do squat for that and now there is a new OC and QB coach so WTF did the FO actually accomplish? IMHO nothing because both Petty and Hack need reps and while petty played you could tell that they failed to coach him up too....
And reporters lie using anonymous quotes all the time, that's why i generally don't pay attention but if someone is going to post about one side i just felt the other side should be posted also.
C. Hackenberg will get traded to the Texans for a 7th round pick, which Mac will use on some JAG punter.
You acknowledge he needs work on his mechanics but wanted them to throw him into game action without fixing them? Hack was the number 1 pro style qb coming out of hs, playing in a pro style offence his freshman year he was talked up immensely. Then he was thrown into a system that completely screwed him up the next two years. After going years as a pro style qb, in his most formative years, it shouldn't take too long to see if he can get back to form. But throwing him onto an NFL field without first fixing his mechanics would probably ruin him before they have a chance to find out.
I say he's just that bad because they didn't play him at all with all the QB issues they had in 2016. If he was even competent he would have played but he didn't and that has to be a sign.
I wish all Jet fans understood this. No one really knows what Hack is and that includes the Jets coaching staff.
There's really no reason to believe Hackenberg will be anything but a spot back up QB in his career... I'm just not seeing it for him and think it would be wise for the Jets to abort on the Hackenberg plan and take a QB at some point in the draft this year.
Sojaz, I agree that Hack needs his mechanics worked on and that he needs reps. Last pre-season was a clear example of what low reps translate onto on the field. Even Vets struggle when they are not given reps. There are far and few QB's with the natural talent to just pop in and play. Now I disagree that Hacks sitting did squat for him. After two years at Penn St where they led the nation in sacks allowed and two years of having his mechanics improperly tampered with, a "red shirt" season IMO was needed. Hackenberg needed to start fresh and sat to wash away being possibly "shell shocked." Sitting a year to re-familiarize himself to a Pro-style offense, and to ease in the speed of the pro game without constant reporting to the media. The NY media would have been all up in his grill. Also I'm glad they didn't rush in to fix his mechanics last year as well. Changes were made to the coaching staff this offseason, so he at least won't have to erase what the last regime instilled in him too much. One positive is that the footwork WAS there. You can see that the footwork Freshman year greatly differs from his Sophomore and Junior years. Gruden asked him about his footwork during Grudens Quarterback Camp With Christian Hackenberg and Hackenberg replied that it was something they asked him to do. The positives - You cant teach arm talent and athleticism, nor teach intelligence. Hackenberg was fortunately blessed by natural selection. Now on the other hand, you can teach and fix throwing motions and footwork mechanics.
I said he sucks, but information on him is extremely limited. He obviously is mentally and physically able to play QB, but had been ruined by the collapse of Penn States offense. With that said, it hasn't looked good for a few reasons: 1). Draft: This guy was considered a 3rd rounder at best and many had him projected to go really late. Some even said he shouldn't even be drafted. We knew he was extremely raw going in. 2). Preseason: That one game he played where he looked so bad that I've seen better QB play in the parking lot of Metlife Stadium. He did not look like a college QB let alone a professional one. 3). Reports during the season about a lack of progression. Whether its because of him, the Jets, or both, I have 0% confidence in our ability to develop QBs. This was evidenced by the firing of our QBs coach. Hopefully there's a turnaround there. All of this could change of course, but there's no evidence he should be on an NFL roster, let alone a starter. I would need to see some more info + huge strides from him to think he's got a shot of being our QB of the future. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
Agreed. If and where/when we draft a QB, and from what Maccagnan has said chances are we WILL draft one, it will say ALOT. But I wouldn't say it was Maccagnan admitting Hackenberg isn't the guy, but more of him trying to improve his chances of finding the guy. Here's a scenario, say we pick a QB and he immediately starts the season, having moderate success. Then said QB struggles in 18', meanwhile Hackenberg has been steadily professing. Remember Hackenberg is young. Then mid 18' season, said drafted QB is benched, giving Hackenberg an opportunity. In a way, like Griffen III vs Cousins. Last preseason honestly didn't really point to him being the FQB or not being the FQB. He showed flashes but given the amount of reps he received, you couldn't expect anything more or less than what he showed. Same would have been the case if he played against Buffalo. Talent will only get you so far. I'm surprised they even through him out there pre-season considering they blatantly stated he was going to sit the season, and the amount of reps he received up to that point. To me that was bad coaching and decision making, maybe giving in to fan service. IMO, Bowles should have made the same decision in the pre-season that he made for the Buffalo game. Now, if he gets the reps and attention to detail regarding his mechanics and fails, that's another thing. Though we should all want him to succeed.
Haha, nice. I purposely didn't want to add a 3rd choice because I was pretty sure most would choose it as he is still an unknown. That said I wanted to just get a feel of where the fan base stood after hearing so much negativity about Hack in general. It's more of a prediction poll as to where people think he will end up in the future. I got exactly what I was looking for and I'm surprised by the results so far. I am a Hack supporter on record but in previous Hack threads I had a hard time finding support of my opinion. Now after seeing the poll I see that while the Hack supporters might not be as vocal they are in the majority.
It's weird NovaJet. What I've noticed, is that there are different types of opinions. Feel free to add any I have missed lol. 1. Pure Hackenberg Supporters. 2. Those that want Hackenberg to succeed as Jets fans as it is good for the franchise. 3. Those that are Hackenberg haters. 4. Those that just want to be right in their assessment of Maccagnan "reaching" on that pick. 5. Same old Jets fans that are mostly pessimistic no matter what the subject is. I came upon this article and wonder how many agree with it as it makes an interesting point, here's an excerpt: "Waiting until mid-October to start Hackenberg doesn’t give him the best chance to succeed. By then, the Jets season will basically be over, the morale in the locker room will be toxic, the first wave of injuries will have hit and the fans will already be fed up. If Bowles, with a nudge from Johnson overseas, puts the kid in on opening day, at least he will give him a fair shot before the season is lost."
I voted yes. I think he definitely has the talent to make it to being one of the top 15 QBs, and I think he will.
Was his mechanics good his first year in a pro style offense? Or did his mechanics go bad those 2 years? They blamed Franklin for his regression but Franklin went to the Rose Bowl and top ten ranking when Hack left. So who was the problem Hack or Franklin?
