I think the plan is pretty clear after this move. The Jets plan to play Hack and/or Petty this season for a significant portion of the season. There is ZERO chance that McCown plays the entire season. Some people will try and connect this signing to the Jets drafting a QB at 6, but I don't see this signing as a clear indication that this will happen.
A fly in the "tank theory" ointment, to be sure, but I can't help but think Macc has a plan for that If we have a good 2017 draft and we don't get the #1 pick in 2018, but are within the top 6 or 7, we may be in a good position to trade up. Besides, isn't that how Bowles coached in 2016... it only got us 5 wins
Well one thing is certain, NO QB currently on the roster has a leg up on any other QB on the roster. This should make for the first HONEST Qb competition in the post-Hess era..
I'm expecting something like this to happen...Carrying 4 QB's was a s**tshow and was terrible for delelopment. I can see the Jets drafting a guy in the second or third and petty will be finished.
Petty getting cut from the Jets would be the best thing ever to happen to Petty's professional career. #FreePettyNow!
I would have liked them to have made this move after OTA's and even the start of training camp. This move means less reps for the young guys.
Who cares how good of a player McCown is compared to Fitz and who cares what he's done in the past? The goal for this season is pretty well-defined: develop young talent and get as good a pick as possible.
It's baffling how much people are bringing this up. It doesn't matter. We had no options at QB that would magically turn the team around. Hell we didn't even have an option that would have made us watchable. Again the goal is clear: develop youth and get a good pick. This helps both causes.
