Admit it. You just don't like Mac and don't want to like him. Your reading of this is very cynical and too negative imo. Even comparing Mac to Idzik is ridiculous. Idzik was awful in about every facet of his job. Mac has done a good job. Again, it was obvious that when Mac was hired, a decision was made to see if they could rebuild on the fly and try to stay competitive. They tried that for two years and it didn't work. Regardless if that was at Woody's behest or Mac and Bowles decided together to go that route, it's understandable as most NFL teams try to go that route these days, and not an awful thing. To his credit, he realizes now that the Jets can't succeed that way. We don't know for certain, but based upon Woody's past actions, it is likely that Mac had to convince Woody that this rebuild had to happen and they had to stop with the "competitive rebuild" nonsense. Mac has done a good job, whether you want to give him credit or not. Yes, he signed a lot of older, expensive FAs his first year, but he had to in order to spend enough money to satisfy the NFL. In addition, it's almost a certainty that Woody ordered that Revis be re-signed. Idzik had the chance to sign some good FAs, and was too afraid or too cheap. Mac structured those FA contracts so that the Jets could get out of them after a year or two without a big cap hit. He did well with that. He has made some good trades, made some good draft picks, signed some good UDFAs that have helped the team, and has some young talent on the team and the team will be in excellent cap shape going forward.
If people have pitchforks out for Mac after this season, unless he totally screws the pooch in the draft, I hope they fall on their own pitchforks and we never have to hear from them again.
When Mac was hired, the decision was made to try a "competitive rebuild." In hindsight that was a mistake, but hindsight is always 20-20. Dollars to doughnuts, Mac wanted to do the complete rebuild 2 years ago but Woody wasn't having it. It's also all but a certainty that Woody and Bowles were the ones pushing for Revis. To Mac's credit, he structured all of those FA contracts so the team could cut those players within 1-3 seasons with little or no cap hit. That's not always easy to do. He signed the best players he could that season. He can't help it that the Jets had such an empty cupboard and it wasn't a very good year for FAs. Additions had to be made in order for the team to be competitive. He did as well as anyone could under the circumstances. He made some good trades, and has some good young talent on the team. I'm sorry that you can't see that. Calling Lee a stupid draft pick after one season is dumb. You're smarter than that!!! Lee may turn out to have been a dumb pick or he may turn out to have been an ok pick, or even a great pick. It's too early to tell. The same goes for Hack. You're going to have to eat a lot of crow if one or both turn out to be great players for the Jets. I hope that you're rooting for both of them and would rather be wrong and have them succeed, than be right and see both fail. Jenkins also was a rookie last season, missed some games due to injury and came on strong late. Again, it's dumb to judge a player after his rookie season, especially OLBs as there is a big adjustment to the NFL. Few come out of college and play very well right out of the gate. Mauldin was a 3rd round draft pick. It wasn't his or Mac's fault that Bowles switched up the D last season and Mauldin as a result didn't get much playing time. Even if Mauldin winds up being a miss, big deal. No GM gets every pick right. Mauldin has great character and a strong motor. You can't fault Mac for taking a chance on a player like that. If all those moves Mac made two years ago were so bad, let's see what you would have done if you were ordered to do a competitive rebuild and had to sign a bunch of expensive FAs in order to meet the NFL's demands. Remember also that he tried to sign two of the top OGs in the NFL and they didn't want to play for the Jets or live on the East Coast. If Mac had signed one of them, we might not have had Skrine or Gilchrist to gripe about.
Yeah exactly. He's fixing his mistakes and he seems to have somewhat learned from it. He also can undo all of this if he signs Cutler to a large contract.
He could have done a lot worse in FA. I don't know if the injury concerns from Hightower are a way to save face or what.... but the contracts Macc has given out so far have been low risk. There are no great LT prospects in the draft so we had to go with Beachum. I wish we would have picked up a decent TE, don't know much about Rivera (if he signs.) Would really like us to get some more picks and or/trade down if we can still get the player we want.
For anyone to believe this nonsense, they would have to be taking some seriously hallucinogenic drugs? This is the worst load of crap I think I have ever seen? We're staring down the barrel of a Cleveland Browns type season two years after Mac already managed to fuck this team up once already? And now we've got sold out Jets fans wanting to stroke the fucking dingbat? 1) Due to Mac's own negligence and inability to draft, the Jets are screwed at QB in 2017. They already have two under performing slugs on this roster that are very clearly not ready to start and they cannot be cut. Now, they need a starter for 2017 and every single veteran option is like comparing Ebola to The Bubonic plague. They all suck. Now, his ONLY option for is the draft. That pick will have to be a day one starter. There will be no freedom to sit that pick for a season. 2) He's drafted 3 linebackers and acquired an additional two via FA, totalling 5 new faces and the Jets still have Sheldon Richardson playing stand up linebacker? ! The linebacking corps was a total fucking mess last season that still boasts David Harris as their best player. Honestly, this is John Idzik all over again. GREAT in regards to fiscal conservancy and fucking TERRIBLE in regards to talent evaluation. He'll get shit canned out on his fat ass after 2017 if he doesn't suddenly become a drafter 400 times better than he's ever been at any point in his career.
I'm not a hater, I've never called for Mac to be fired, and I don't think he should be. However, an outsider, ie not a Jets fan, looking at his performance would conclude it's subpar. He inherited a weak roster and a lot of cap space, and now we're back to square one without much success in between. He deserves a second chance, but if we're in the same place in a year or two, he needs to go.
He got us to 10-6 the first year, within a (poorly coached) game of reaching the play-offs Older players did not come through in 2016. Thanks to his structuring of the contracts...he was able to get them all off the books..we may have $100m of cap space for the 2018 season. To me this was not a coincidence, it was part of a plan. He doesn't deserve an A yet...he needs to have a big draft and rebuild the OL in 2017, but I like his plan so far. I don't think people will be calling for his head late in the season if we are in the running for the 1 pick.
Curious to know what grade would Tannembaum get with two championships games that the Jets could have won. With a rookie QB and HC.
Looking back at what our needs were that offseason, who was available and the fact that Mac HAD to spend the money. It was a no brainer why he was praised around the NFL that year. As NCJ pointed out he gave us outs in said contracts so that he could unload and reload. In hindsight he signed the best of what was out and was creative enough to add even more talent and the right pieces via trade on the cheap. Looking at his drafts, IMO it is fair to say that he is not by far a bad drafter, and here is why: Look at the picks he's made after the 2nd round, most of those picks are contributing and productive. Petty and Edwards still have the jury out on them. Finding talent in rounds 3-7 & not to mention undrafted free agents, that almost immediately contributes is extremely difficult. If MM does the same in this upcoming draft and hits in rounds 1 & 2 .. rounds with a lower bust percentage .. we can be competitive far sooner than expected! 2015 Leonard Williams (1st round, #6 overall) After two seasons Williams is headed to his first Pro Bowl and has the look of a player who will be there with a high amount of frequency. Devin Smith (2nd round, #37th overall) Smith has been a disappointment through two years, to put it politely. After some minor flashes as a rookie, he sustained a serious knee injury last December and basically missed his entire sophomore campaign. Lorenzo Mauldin (3rd round, #82 overall) After an encouraging rookie year as a situational pass rusher, Mauldin regressed in year two. He missed five games due to injury. Bryce Petty (4th round, #103 overall) A mid round project quarterback who will already be 26 before the 2017 season. Jarvis Harrison (5th round, #152 overall) Did not make the roster as a rookie. One of the few picks at this point that you can definitively say was a miss. Deon Simon (7th round, #223 overall) Showed signs of being a capable full time nose tackle in his second year. He looked the part when given a bigger opportunity, Simon may end up being a late round steal. 2016 Darron Lee (1st round, #20 overall) It was an okay rookie campaign for Lee, who was generally considered solid value at the 20th pick. Christian Hackenberg (2nd round, #51 overall) A controversial pick that did not get any less controversial after one season, as he spent the majority of it as a 4th string, part time scout team quarterback. Jordan Jenkins (3rd round, #83 overall) After a quiet start to the season, Jenkins finished strong down the stretch (2.5 sacks, 1 FF in the last 4 games and a top ten pass rush grade from PFF in the final two weeks). Juston Burris (4th round, #118 overall) For a fourth rounder, it is hard to be anything but content with what you saw from Burris as a rookie. Brandon Shell (5th round, #158 overall) Stated the Jets final three games and held up way better than expected. He will likely get to compete to be the starting right tackle next season and if the Jets found a starting tackle in the 5th round, that will be a big win for Maccagnan. Lac Edwards (7th round, #235 overall) If you are going to use a pick on a punter, he better be good. Edwards was not good as a rookie with a 40.8 yards punt, no consistency pinning kicks inside the 20. Charone Peake (7th round, #241 overall) Flashed in a very limited role and took advantage when given targets, this has potential to be a good value pick in the 7th round. Quarterbacks 1. Mark Sanchez (Re-signed 2-year, $9M deal with PHI) 2. Jake Locker (Retired) 3. Josh McCown (Signed 3-year, $14M deal with CLE) 4. Brian Hoyer (Signed 2-year, $10.5M deal with HOU) 5. Describing the Jets picks doesn't show that Mac drafted well. You need to describe the picks on every team and show that Mac's picks are better than theirs.
IMO, Of course it does .. But if I have some time I'll actually do what your bringing up and see what we get.
Hey man Sorry did not mean to anger you. I'm a die hard, well beat up, many time disappointed, fan. I truly hope Hack turns into a 14 year all pro. I hope Lee does also. I'm just saying the jury is still out, and those picks don't make me bullish at the moment. Stats don't always tell the story. I watched the games. I like Lee as a speedster and young talent. But how many tackles for a loss did he make? How many picks did he have? How many plays did he blow up? How many fumbles did he force? How much did the opposing team have to gameplan for him? I don't know. I'm not being sarcastic. I don't know. But to my memory he was just another guy. He got burnt a lot in coverage (not from lack of footspeed but technique) and I recall he made tackles after 5-6 yards. So yes, he got the 2nd most tackles, but to me they were not the impact game altering plays. Believe me- I hope and pray he becomes a force. So far it's too early to say. I've personally not been impressed yet - but it's only year 1 and I'd be so happy to be wrong in year 2. I love the Jets. I want them to win. I really do. Maybe the best testament to MAC are his solid late picks so far. Good luck to him and us. I pray I'm wrong.
LOL, I wasn't angered. No worries. I actually meant that I would look up those stats GM by GM, but probably by our GM's first. I'm just saying I think MM is getting waaay more of a bad wrap then he should. This draft, in the midst of a complete rebuild will be big and either make or break his rep.
Really? An "A" for just holding serve and not royally screwing up? How low can our standards be? Draft and/or acquire a bonafide star player or two, then we'll talk about an A. And FIND ME A QUARTERBACK!!!!
For my own knowledge and so I can understand the other side, please explain WHY he deserves a second chance? It's normal for a GM to get ONE chance. To my knowledge, there's no such thing as giving out mulligans after you mess up an NFL team? So why is it that Mac and Toilet deserve MORE chances????
From your keyboard to God's ears. A three win season is exactly what this team needs this season. It's time to draft a QB in 2018. I'm tired of the 6-9 win hamster wheel of non progress with success being measured by being in playoff contention or the occasional wild card berth.
Can't give him an A until he does the most important part of this approach correctly and that's draft good. We need to hit on something good outside of the 1st round for once!!! No point in dumping the roster if you're drafting crap to replace it...
