McCown will be spending the next 2 days in NY. @rapsheet "Speaking of QBs… FA QB Josh McCown is on his way to #Jets, source said. He’s visiting with them today & tomorrow. Also has #Cowboys interest" I bet he doesn't leave the building without a contract.
If they're serious about Petty or Hack under center in week one and are just looking for a veteran mentor/reserve, this could be the guy. Someone like Siemian or Cutler would seem likely to start this year.
stupid. stupid when you think about it though its actually a surprise he hasn't played for our Jets yet. He has played for every other team in the league with a terrible QB situation, I suppose we're due
With McCown being the first QB they've shown any real interest in (by bringing him in) tells me they are focused on a mentor role. All signs point to the grooming of Hack for late 2017 appearance, and 2018 debut. McCown is the ideal candidate for grooming him. He's been linked to having a great mentor relationship and most people believe he will coach when he retires.
I don't always buy this "mentor" talk. We've had one of the greatest CBs of all time on the roster for most of his career and all our other young cornerbacks throughout this time have been hot garbage. Additionally, Brunell seemed to have no effect on our QB corps for the time he was here. McCopter's coming to start games.
I'm not sure why you think it's stupid. There are no QBs currently in FA that are a winning solution. But McCown is the best stop-gap tutor available and could be the catalyst needed to help develop our true starter. Besides, he'll be dirt cheap choosing here to be a starter over a backup elsewhere. How do you go wrong?
and yet if he's such a great mentor seems like all the teams he's been on there would be a success story or two. Who has he mentored? Dan Orlovsky in DET? Jamarshmellow Russell in OAK? Matt Moore in CAR? Gay Cutler in CHI? Johnny 8-ball in CLE? one thing he is good at is ensuring the team he starts for gets a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft before they get rid of him. He's done that like 5 times including 2 number 1 overall picks
Who's to say Revis ever took anyone under his wing. There are no reports that indicate he was ever grooming guys. This isn't a process that takes place via osmosis. You have to be willing to teach and be good at teaching. CB play is driven primarily by athleticism and physical skill, while QB is mainly mental. I've seen plenty of guys with arm talent fall by the wayside, but Alex Smith's still have a place in the NFL. You won't see a bad athlete playing CB.
I agree that not every veteran to be brought in is necessarily a mentor, but young players can learn a lot from somebody with more league experience. As for McCown, he's supposedly thought of as a hot coaching candidate when he does retire, so for him, the mentor talk seems founded in reality.
Besides Matt Moore all of those QBs listed are terrible. I never said the guy could reconfigure the genetic composition of players and mold them into stars. But based on your assessment if Mike Glennon turns out good you eat crow? I think the willingness to publicly state you're willing to mentor and help Johnny Manziel speaks volumes about the guy. Most of these guys aren't willing to accept such a role, if he is then I say it's all for the good. We can have a QB that sucks that doesn't help out or has ever been given any credit as a teacher. Or one that sucks but will do what he can to assist. Why is this even an issue?
Listen, if this is a fact, I say go in the kitchen and bake some cookies. Silently replace the cupcakes on the table with them and BOOM! Done deal.
McCown is a professional that will compete with Hack during OTAs and TC. It will allow the Jets to see where Hack is. It would be a good idea to bring him in and he won't cost much.
Another washed up QB that offers absolutely nothing I don't buy the QB mentor talk and after that we're left with nothing but shitty QB play Waste of time and money...again
