Jay Cutler reminds me of Brett Favre. You know those games Favre would have when he was a gunslinger, would make any throw he wanted. Sometimes it would cost his team the game. That is Cutler except without the good parts of Favre. Still an upgrade over anything the Jets had in 2016 though.
Yeah, and the "good" parts of Favre (i.e. Favre in his prime) were 8 billion times better than anything Cutler has ever done.
Why sign a jag when you've got two young players on the roster that can really use some playing time? Better to draft a raw yet highly talented prospect round 5+ on and let the young'uns duke it out.
I pray to god this is how the rest of the offseason goes. Draft another young guy and see if we get any roi from our three young quarterbacks
If they really want someone who might be a FQB they probably shouldn't wait until the 5th round to take him. 3rd probably; maybe early 4th. After than they're probably just a warm body. Yes, I KNOW Brady was taken in the 6th but that was "lightening in a bottle" and he landed in a place that could develop him. The Jets have shown no ability to develop QBs, so they'd better be :"job ready" when they get here.
Jets don't have a 4th round pick. I think if they identify a QB who is franchise caliber, they have to go at 6. I personally don't feel comfortable in this year's crop. The QB I believe to be the best is Watson and I wouldn't take him at 6 over Howard, Fournette, or Hooker. I think Mahomes will be good but I wouldn't take him before 2nd round pick. Once you get past those guys, you can still take a flyer on Davis Webb but the dropoff is increasingly sharp. I agree that 5 and on you're shooting for lightning in a bottle, but I also believe it's worth it to identify players who might have flown under the radar for one reason or another and take a shot on them, particularly that late, particularly at that position. Also we still don't know what the Jets think about Hackenberg internally. Without that information it's very hard to project their strategy, as it would be vastly different depending on that factor.
Yeah I know they don't currently have a 4th, but assume they might get one in trading picks. I like Watson, but I like Mahomes more because of his sheer arm strength and ability to make plays no other QB can. He's a question mark because he might be the first QB taken, or he might fall to the 3rd round. Because he's the QB I would prefer the Jets to take, I might gamble that he would fall to the 2nd round, and that's why I would consider a trade down scenario, where they could still get an immediate impact player with their first pick, AND get Mahomes their future FQB with their 2nd. If bad luck strikes and Mahomes is taken before they get their 2nd pick I would then look to take Webb or Peterman a little later. I rank both these guys right behind Mahomes as being able to be FQB.
If you need a FQB and like one in the draft, you should bite the bullet and take him as soon as you can even if it means moving up. The heck with whether they are worthy of the pick. Because if you're right, you're in QB heaven for 15 years or so. If you"re wrong, you're not so much worse off drafting a bust that it wasn't worth the gamble. All it takes is one team out of 31 to like your guy a little better than you and you're out in the cold. If you pick a guy in the 2nd round and on, then you must have some doubts about his ability to cut it as a FQB.
I have to agree with you. But I guess I'm trying to approach it from what I think the Jets might do, I don't think Macc will take a QB at 6. Given that, I would still prefer to keep the pick and take Fournette or Howard there, but again, wearing my "Macc Hat", guessing that he might believe he can find near-equivalent RBs and TEs later (I disagree that any of them will be close, but Macc might think so), and so he would consider trading down in return for more picks. Under that scenario, I would be keeping my fingers crossed that Mahomes would fall to them with their 2nd pick. In short, I'm not advocating this approach, simply saying what I would do if this was the route taken.
Next year seems to be the year Mac will go all in on a QB. He may suprise and use a high pick but with him talking about trading down seems like it's just not gonna happen. I think and prefer if we went with a 3rd round pick and drafted Peterman. This way we have 3 young guys battling it out and a high value draft picks (round 1 and 2) can go to immediate starters. Peterman has the smarts and upside without worrying about blowing a first round pick. On top of that Petty will be out next year if he does not progress and we have already started developing a decent backup if we go for our FQB next year.
If you're passing the "Macc Hat" to me, I would draft a QB at 6 and rebuild around that guy. Restock the offense roster with guys who can compliment your pick. Who knows when the Jets will be this high in the draft again. With Mac shedding so many veterans, it makes sense to rebuild around a QB. I don't think the ones he has on the roster (Petty, Hackenberg) are the answer.
This isn't my preferred route, but it makes sense, and I would be okay with it, depending on how the rest of the draft went. I do think Peterman is a dark horse, and could be a FQB with the right pieces around him.
