Is it possible Beachum will play RT or is he strictly a LT? I only ask because I am still holding out hope that they select a LT in round 1. (I anticipate I will be disappointed)
I don't know how "official" it is but I remember seeing in a couple of articles that he will play LT while Ijilana and Shell battle it out at RT.
So you think moving Beachum to RT and putting a rookie at LT would change anything about the "ranking" of our line? I use quotations because I think it's a monstrous oversell to call them the worst OL in the NFL in 2017.
The OL might be bottom third this year but it also might be very average. The solutions the Jets have chosen have been the ones you'd expect to see if they wanted to move the OL towards the median. The players on the line are younger than they were last year and less injury prone. There is a real competition at RT among several young players, assuming Brent Qvale is still in the mix - which from a competition standpoint I expect he is. The guards are both serviceable and either young or young prime. The center is a younger player getting his first season where he is assumed to be the starter. there's also the possibility the Jets draft a center. I'd be really surprised if the OL is consistently overmatched this year like they were last year after Mangold and Clady were injured.
There's NOTHING ridiculous about it. Absolutely nothing. Just last season we saw Mo Wilkerson, Marcus Gilchrist, Sheldon Richardson, and Calvin Pryor all go in the toilet due to bad coaching. And I could go on in depth about all of the other failures on the roster in 2016? A good HC needs to put his players in a position to succeed. In a position to do what they do best. Yet, we saw all season how the defense (Toilet's apparent specialty in AZ) got caught out of position and gave up big plays to opposing offenses. The DL that was widely considered one of the very best in the league going into 2016, was HUGELY disappointing. In other words, the CS simply did not stem that tide at all over the course of 2016. Toilet does not do any of the things that any normal HC would do. What he does instead is force round pegs into square holes. Like playing Sheldon Richardson as a stand up linebacker? Can someone please tell me what kind of sense that makes? Or not change things up at halftime when the game isn't going right? Or not even teaching the players the very most fundamental things important to the game like avoiding penalties or textbook tackling? Toilet is all over the map bad. There's many on this site who feel he's as bad as Rich Kotite. Those are not my words, but it is legitimately bad. So voicing a little reservation about Kelvin Beachum here in NY, based on the HC's history with the team, is not only reasonable, but some would say EXPECTED....
I don't know if that's the answer or not because I don't have a clue if Beachum can play RT. However, selecting a guy who started from day 1 as an 18 year old frosh though at LT in the top conference in the land, the outland trophy winner, for example, certainly isn't going to hurt the offensive line thats for sure. but you believe the current projected lineup: Beachum, Carpenter, Johnson, Winters, Ijalana - won't be the worst OL in the league? I believe we had one of the worst in 2016 and this is an even worse projected lineup. How is it a 'monstrous oversell" to suggest that's the worst OL in the NFL?? who is worse?
brad, how do you figure though??? Outside of Beachum it's projected to be the very same guys starting that you admit were consistently overmatched this season when Mangold and Clady were injured.
A healthy Beachum instead of an injured Clady makes a pretty huge difference. I think folks like brad and myself are of the belief that this group isn't among the worst (but certainly bottom 10) because last year was just a total comedy of errors. The entire team was bad from top to bottom. Studs like Mo and Sheldon were underperforming for the first times in their careers. Fitz took a huge step backwards. The O was out of whack from the second Decker went down. Just a ton of things that mixed together, led to one hell of a shit stew.
So they went in the toilet last year? How did those same players do in 2015 under the same coaching staff? And you didn't "voice a little reservation" about Beachum, you basically said he was going to suck. Some coaches might get the best out of players and others may not coach them up enough but a coach isn't going to make one of the better LTs in the league, if he gets back to his pre-injury form, into an LT who sucks.
Also, from past practice I dont think Mac chooses OL with high draft picks. I think he likes to select later rounds and train them up. I think that is sound, unless there is a clear talent in the first round, which there isn't this year. Here is Walter football's evaluation of the Beachum signing: Jets sign OT Kelvin Beachum (3 years, $24 million): B Grade I'm a bit disappointed that some team couldn't land Kelvin Beachum on a great value contract. Beachum was awful in 2016, but was coming off an injury, which would explain why he was so ineffective. He was much better for the Steelers beforehand, so he could rebound going forward. I thought this would make him available cheaply, but teams are desperate for tackle help in a poor market. Beachum, if completely healthy for the first time since 2014, will provide some much-needed help at left tackle. This has been a problem area since D'Brickashaw Ferguson regressed, so Beachum is potentially a quality solution. I went back and forth between a "B" and a B-. I settled on the "B" because it's not the Jets' fault the market is how it is. They didn't really have an alternative, and they might be getting a very good player. but people like Wilkerson and Richardson under performing or Eric Decker being hurt have nothing to do with the offensive line being beaten at the point of attack consistently. Fitz was terrible passing the ball but I believe he helped the OL because he gets the ball out quickly. And Clady played 8 games and is a significantly better player than Beachum. -I don't understand giving Beachum $8 mil a year when you could've had a better, more versatile tackle like Riley Reiff for the same figure. -I don't understand giving Ijalana a 2 year $11m contract when the guy is a dime-a-dozen player you could really replace with anyone. -And maybe they'll surprise me with another acquisition or a big draft day selection, but if not I REALLY don't understand being content with the current projected lineup, which I believe will be the Jets' least talented opening day OL group since the dark ages 1995-1996. I get it, this is a rebuilding team, but you do nothing but hurt the development of young position players if the offensive line gets manhandled every week, which is what I believe will happen to this crew as it currently is constructed.
49ers, chargers, seahawks, vikings, panthers, rams, jags, and the bengals just lost two plus starters ... im sure that im missing a couple others
Because the LT will be fully competent this year and the other guys will all have another year in the system. OL takes time to jell because more than any other group the consistency comes from all the members understanding what needs to be done and understanding how well each person can do their part of the job.
You realize Beachum was graded as one of the worst tackles in all of football and then cut by the Jacksonville jaguars right?
You realize he was coming off a major knee injury and surgery don't you? You realize that when he was with the Steelers (before the injury) he was a very good player and rated as one of the top LTs don't you?
1. He was never "one of the top LTs." 2. As you note, he is coming off a major knee surgery and obviously hasn't fully recovered back to his old form. Some players never do (especially linemen, see Ryan Clady). The jaguars, who badly needed a LT, cut him. The OP made a pretty big assumption, assuming that he is not only healthy but that he'll be back to the LT from 3 years ago. All I'm saying is, that's a huge casual assumption which is certainly not based on anything we've seen on the field yet.
