That is ridiculous. Where is all of our money? We don't have a QB, #1 WR, #1 CB, a LT, a C, or LBs worth a damn. Where is all of our money?
Is Revis officially off that yet? I thought he was told he was going to be cut, but couldn't actually be cut until the new league year starts. Most things I've seen had us at about $45m now.
"Where is all of our money?" "That's easy Ask Darrel Mevi$ Conman Shitz Mo I Took a Vacation Wilkerson Yo Mack Sign Me Skrine Yo Yo Mack me Too Gilchrist, Sheldon I work part time for Uber Richardson...shall I go on? rookie contract on Lee etc Coffers drained...continue with cuts Mac and try not to pay thru the nose going forward (good luck with that) March 9th we can cut egotistica/lentitled/ felon I am better than Deion...... REVIS
I wouldn't freak out just yet, there are no real dynamic FA play makers that I am aware of. I hope we focus on gaining depth and average players and carry over some cap space to next year when we can get a few bigger name players to go with our current youth movement.
We still have a little under $20 million tied up in three expendable players (Harris, Gilchrist, and Richardson). If we were to cut all three, assuming we couldn't trade Richardson, you're looking at cap space of a little over $50 million.
If you click into over the cap you can see it: Mo $18 mil Decker $9 mil (gone) Skrine $9 mil Sheldon $8 mil (gone) Winters $ 8 mil Gilchrist $7 mil (gone) Carpenter $7 mil Harris $6.5 mil L Williams $5 mil So I think there is another $25 mil of room, but not yet. And as you shown teams like the Browns, Niners and Jags have alot of firepower.
exactly, Id prefer to fill the roster with role- players rather than reach on question mark guys. Or over pay for Gilmore. If we can get Bouye for a reasonable contract, sure, although i don't think that will happen. Teams that go nutty in FA typically will regret those over-paying contracts, i.e. Suh, Mario williams, Torrey Smith, Brock Osweiller
I am so tired of David Harris getting a pass every single offseason. He's been a 2 down player for a good 4 years now. We had our chance to move on when Bowles/Mac first got here & Bowles made his first power play pushing to keep Harris claiming he was the only qualified party to be D's signal caller. But wasn't Bowles implementing the D for the first time? Couldn't it have been anyone to fill that role if we were truly starting from scratch? Bowles plays favorites...like many other coaches that have come through here..and it always seems to be for no nonsense overrated defensive veterans that frankly hold the team back. Harris is a future ring of honor inductee & a class act. But he's not winning us any games anymore & his pass coverage/play in space has been a liability for year's now. Why not move on?!
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2017/03/nfl_free_agency_2017_what_is_latest_on_jets_salary.html says here about $45 mil. although it IS NJ.com so take it with a grain of salt
I agreed with you 2 years ago and didn't want him re-signed, but he has played pretty well in spite of his speed limitations. I think he has still led the team in tackles. Who would replace him? The Jets have enough holes now to fill that it's going to take two offseasons to even begin to adequately address them. Creating another hole now would not be the wisest move imo. In addition, Lee credited Harris with helping him a lot last year. I think the Jets will add an ILB either in the draft or in FA and Harris can mentor him as well.
So, let's say the Jets don't sign anybody big in the off season. Would it be a good thing to carry near 35m+ to next year? Theoretically it gets added on to next year's cap so it's extra money to spend, but isn't there a limit on how much can be carried over? I remember the last time this happened, Idzik got fired for carrying over 20m instead of spending it in the secondary. I like the idea of carrying over as much as possible, just because we know 2017 is going to be a rebuilding type of year. Maybe sign a solid young safety or CB and then draft for the rest?
I agree with that, but we cant spend nothing simply because I believe there is a time limit on when you HAVE to spend the money. SO we don't want to be forced into overpaying a mediocre player. We should use the money this year for depth and role players to fill out the roster, and then next year when the picture becomes clearer, THEN we can bring in a few actual playmakers
Is Harris really a 2 down player? He had more snaps in 2016 (90% of defensive snaps), than anybody on defense aside from Revis. I get that he isn't great in coverage, but as ILB he shouldn't have to cover in most cases. He's been a solid guy and a locker room leader. I think that's why he gets a pass. Plus he's the signal caller for the defense, so I'd rather see him around to groom Jenkins or somebody new into that role first. I think that's why he's not cut. He's still got value to the Jets. I could see the Jets drafting another ILB this year and then letting Harris retire when his contract runs out. You have to keep some vets around to preserve continuity and he strikes me as one of those guys.
He isn't great in space & misses his share of tackles. In a passing league he has become a liability. Now if he becomes a situational 2 down/goalline player I'm all for it..at a reduced salary that is...but he has no business on the field in any passing situation.
Hypothetically speaking, if Mac and Co. were to cut Harris, would you be willing to open the wallet for Hightower?
He should have only been playing 2 downs for several years now. He plays more, but he definitely should not.
