https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/03/patriots-offer-first-round-pick-for-brandin-cooks "One of the unnamed franchises is hoping to give the Saints some defensive help to acquire the elusive wideout." I think we would have to include a pick but it sounds intriguing.
I understand that completely but we could use a 23 year old stud WR more than a third wheel DL so if we can parlay SR into Cooks it's a no brainer. Cut Deck loose and roll with Cooks and the young guys. If we can trade down and get Howard or one of the stud RBs along with Cooks our O would be greatly upgraded.
The Saints want a first round pick for him, not any first round pick either. They want an early first round pick. They already turned down NEs first round pick. If they agreed to a trade involving Sheldon, they would likely want our second or as well. So essentially we're giving up 2 picks for him. A potential 3rd we could get for Sheldon and our current 2 second round pick. I honestly think Cooks is a luxury we can't afford.
Sheldon was the 13th pick of the 1st round pick. Cooks was the 20th pick. Now the Saints may not want Richardson, but if they do, I don't think we'd have to give up our 2nd round pick. The article I read said that they wanted a mid-first round pick anyway, not an early first round pick.
I'd pass on Cooks. He supposedly wants out of NO because of the offense and is looking for a big money extension. If a WR is unhappy playing with Brees, he would probably boycott playing for the Jets.
I don't think there draft position equates to their perceived value. Sheldon has underwhelmed, is a problem off the field while Cooks has played well and not been a distraction. By your logic on this topic, we should offer Pryor. He was drafted ahead of Cooks so we should get Cooks and a draft pick from the Saints for him.
Sheldon underwhelmed at OLB this past season. When he has played his natural position, he has played well. Wasn't he DROY? We may have to give them a pick as well, but I don't think it would be the 2nd round pick. If it was, I wouldn't do it, but I'd give the compensatory 3rd round pick if necessary. No team may want Sheldon, so we might not get anything for him in a trade and may be stuck with him and have to let him walk next season. If he could be part of a package to bring us a great WR, I'd do it.
As a team in a rebuild mode, the worst option is to give up picks. Period, end of story. So if a straight up trade is not good enough, move on. WR is not in our critical path, but just about any other position short of DL is. Stay focused Jet fans.
Normally, I'd agree with you LA, but not this time. B. Marshall is gone. Decker may wind up gone as well, or not be the same player he was. If so, that would leave Enunwa is the only proven WR on the roster. Anderson is getting close, but isn't there yet. Peake is still just potential. Devin Smith is still just potential. Jalin Marshall is still just potential. I like the potential, but whomever the Jets' QB is, he's going to need reliable targets. Enunwa over the middle and Anderson and Cooks going deep would give opposing DCs nightmares. They have RBs that can catch, but unless or until they add a TE or two, they don't have enough at WR. Getting a great WR for a bottom of the 3rd round draft pick and Richardson would be a steal. What if Peake and Smith don't pan out? Enunwa, Anderson and Jalin Marshall is not enough at WR.
Yes Sheldon was DROY in 2013, made the Pro Bowl in 14 then 15 hit. His first suspension and a decline in production followed by his second suspension in 2015 and reports of his off field issues, missing/ late to meetings. His off field issues predate his time in the NFL. He was the top rated DE and #4 rated recruit in the country coming out of HS but had to go to JUCO for 2 years before Moussouri due to inability to score high enough on the SAT's. Throw in his public died with Marshall and his pregame video saying fuck this game, where the Ho's at and his draft position means even less. I would love to have Cooks on the roster but I'd like to trade Sheldon for a third if possible or an early 4th and keep all our picks. If the Franchise covets a WR that highly they could trade back, land Ross and add a 3rd round pick for trading back, keep both current 3s and add one for Richardson. For a rebuilding team, picks are gold . Besides as you said, Cook might not want to come here and would leave as soon as possible. As good as he is in New Orleans, we can't honestly expect him to have nearly the same production with the current QBs and roster.
We want a 1st year WR with the pick not a guy going into his 4th year who has been underpaid for his production and is looking to score a huge contract to make up the difference.
So we'd give up Sheldon, another draft pick and get a great young receiver at the end of his rookie contract looking to get one of the biggest wideout contracts ever and who is unhappy with Drew Brees throwing to him. Sounds awful. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
Sooo we want a completely unproven third round rookie WR not a proven stud that is only going into his 4th year? Did I read that right?
Cooks just mad cause Michael Thomas stole his shine. Doesn't seem like a good teammate. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
Anyone who says he's too expensive with Deck and Marshall gone even if we give Cooks a decent deal we will still have one of the youngest and cheapest WR cores in the league.
Assuming the Jets are even in this discussion, this seems like a luxury move for the Jets to try to make. If we can move Richardson and potentially even Pryor as part of this deal to avoid giving up our 1st round pick, I'd be ok with it. But I'd rather move those two guys for draft picks if even possible.
