In trying to be open minded about drafting yet another "D" guy first in general, and about Hooker in particular, let me say this: 1. He's only been a starter for one year, and only played two years in H.S., so as good as he seems physically, he's still is going to take some time to learn the game. 2. He's injured, and while the prognosis is good, we heard that about Dee Milliner. I'm not saying he's that bad, or that's the only reason he should be skipped with the first pick, but it has to raise at least a caution flag. 3. In today's NFL it's offense that rules. Defense can win you games, especially in the playoffs, but to get there and compete you need an above average, if not great, offense, and the Jets have leaned towards "D" bucking that trend. They need to stop, NOW. 4. Okay, on the PLUS side of Hooker, he seems like a natural, and would certainly be a difference-maker for the Jets, especially as a FS, covering some of the glaring holes in the rest of the secondary, again assuming he fully recovers from his injury. But when you add it all up for him, he's kind of like Mahomes: great physical skills, great instincts, probably needs some polishing to reach his full potential. And as good as he might be, bigger impacts could be gained by grabbing a QB, RB, Edge Rusher, TE at #6. So, head to head, for the #6 pick: I think you've got to pick Mahomes or the BPA at one of the other positions I noted, since they make a far bigger impact on the team. Unfortunately Hooker won't slide to a later round, so I don't see him going to Jets, unless they take him first, and that would a mistake IMO.
Listen, if you are going to troll at least be original, right now you are as annoying as annoying can get.
1. If you watched the tape from above, it already shows he knows his assignments and is in position most of the time. He will only improve from there which would make him an All Pro type player. Read any scouting report on Hooker's FIQ: 2. He played while he was injury and was absolutely amazing WITH the injury. He's be ready for rookie mini-camp. It won't affect his stock all that much. Scouts have already confirmed this. Negative points for comparing Dee Milliner who had injuries from the very beginning of his college career as well. Moving on. This is absolutely Einstein's definition of insanity 3. Defense wins championships. You need an opportunistic defense, if you cant stop a passing attack, your QB will never get on the field and the lead will be insurmountable. Balance is everything. Moving on from this as well. Next. 4. Comparing a defensive player to an offensive player. Urgh done for sure dude. Your argument is fully opinionated and it doesn't really change my stance on Hooker at 6. It's a nice "effort", but no solid information really here. A TE having the same impact as a FS with unlimited range? Surely you jest.
First, not true. If it were, the Jets would already have several, not just one from 50 years ago. Second, with today's rules, its almost impossible for even a great defense to stop a great offense. Why do you think Brady can pick apart any "D" with a minute to play? The rules - and the directives from the NFL demand that offenses be allowed to rule at the end of games. If you don;t have an offense - QB - that can take advantage of this, you're done. Third, I agree, "Balance is everything", but the Jets don't have that and haven;t for years, it's heavily slanted towards the "D", and what has that gotten them? Yes, if only we could "Move on".
1) You look at any SB winner that had a great offense and you will see that a opportunistic defense was ALWAYS right behind it. 2010 Saints forced the most turnovers in the league 2011 Green Bay Packers forced turnovers and had the "best defensive player in the league" in Charles Woodson [Revis should've won it that yr] 2007 Colts didn't win because of the QB, Peyton was actually awful that post-season. Good defense, good running game. So, until you can provide statistical evidence here I would say you are wrong. 2) Opportunistic! Opportunistic! Opportunistic! Sure a team will pile on yards on you, but it's all about bending and not breaking. Generating turnovers and keeping the QB off the field. Look at how the Seahawks looked on D when Earl Thomas went out. 3) That's really on the Jets in terms of how they've drafted in the past in terms of balance. Plenty of times in the past, I wish the Jets drafted an offensive player, that doesn't mean you ignore a potential all pro FS staring at you with the 6th pick. Yes the Jets allocated more resources then necessary at defense, but that doesn't mean you start ignoring it if you have a problem. You have to move on here, you really lost a lot brownie points trying to compare Hooker who got hurt once, to Dee Milliner who got hurt like 1000x times and was already broken before going into the NFL. One day we will both agree on a pick or where the jets should address their picks, but that won't be happening in this draft.
First, I never said you don't need defense...just that an over reliance on it is no guarantee of winning, and that is what the Jets have been doing. Second, I agree and did not disagree about having an opportunistic defense, but the rules are set up to give the offense every chance to win. Look a this last SB: At halftime I told my wife: "Watch and see if this doesn't become a very close game at the end", and sure enough, what happened? All it would've taken was for the Falcons to be "opportunistic" and make that last stop, but they couldn't. Being opportunistic is fine, it's what you want, but there is no guarantee you'll get - or make - the opportunity happen. The best teams can do this more than the weaker ones, but it's still not guaranteed. Third, yes it IS "on the Jets", which is why I'm objecting to what they've done. But as to "ignoring a potential All Pro FS", yeah you do if there is someone better, or who you think will make a bigger impact to your team. I respect that you believe a FS - in particular THIS FS - is the highest impact player likely to be there at 6 for the Jets. Fine, that's your opinion, but don't get all holier than thou like your opinion is gospel. My opinion is that there are better players available to them at 6 for the reasons I've stated here an elsewhere, if you disagree that's your right. Fourth, I didn't "compare" - as in equate - Hooker to Milliner, I used Milliner as an example of being cautious. I specifically noted that he was NOT like Milliner since it was just the one injury, but it IS a serious one and should be fully vetted. Obviously we won't agree this year, but hopefully we can remain cordial and open-minded.
1) My 3rd point from the previous post goes into more detail on the draft strategy of the jets, it didn't work out with the Jets in the past, but you can't ignore defense in the draft if the talent is strong. We got decent # of picks, so if we go D first then proceed to go O the next 2 rounds, I don't think anyone will complain as long as the selection is valid. 2) Remember the Patriots got the ball back because they played very good defense, they sacked Ryan and got them out of FG range. Balance is everything. Opportunistic defense and a good one is vital. 3) Having a FS with great range can transform a defense, just like Earl Thomas did in Seattle. It'll go a long way to helping this team. I never said my opinion is "Gospel". A lot of people feel the same way I do about Hooker, scouts, etc. You can fully have your opinion, but I don't want to hear about the definition of insanity or this player is going to be in the CFL. Those shots are petty. 4) There is 0 reason to put Milliner and Hooker in the same sentence. Look up Milliner's injury history in college dude. This is more-so reaching then anything to try and prove a point. I personally would've liked to talk more about the player, but now we are so off topic from talking about how this player will help the team.
I never said Hooker was a CFL talent. I admitted in fact that he's superior. I just disagree that he should be their first pick. I think I gave valid reasons for that opinion. In short, the draft is deeper in "D" than "O", particularly in the secondary, and making a big upgrade in their "O" provides "more bang for the buck" IMO. If I were going to take a "D" player first, I would prefer a pass rusher because it helps the secondary as well as the pass rush. That said, I would also rate FS higher than a CB for the reason you stated. My comment about "insanity" was to point out that if you keep doing the same thing over and over - drafting "D" with primary picks - you'll get the same results, which has already been proven based on their record. To summarize, I never intended to imply that Hooker is chopped liver, only that I don;t think he should be their 1st pick. I understand that you do, so we'll just have to agree to disagree.
The CFL talent thing was a shot at Boozin Boozer not you. I would love a pass-rusher as well, but I don't think there is one worth the 6 pick outside of Myles and Myles will go #1. There are certain positions on D, I want nothing to do with at 6. CB is a position that can be looked into later in the draft and in FA. Jets need a young core set of players on O and D ... one on each level of the defense and offense you need a good LT and a QB. So far all we have is Leonard Williams. Jets have a lot of work to do which is why I am looking at both sides of the ball. There was a few years I wanted nothing but offensive players in the first. Amari Cooper, I loved that guy. Jack Conklin from last year ... examples from the past 2 seasons. That ship has sailed for now ... until next year ...
I completely agree with the idea of finding impact players on both sides of the ball. If Garrett somehow fell to them at 6, and Mahomes were there, I personally would be torn as to who I would take. Our main difference of opinion seems to be that I would address the "O" first, and you the "D", but over the course of this draft I think we agree that Macc has to hit some home runs on both units.
Hooker has amazing ball skills and range, but he is a terrible tackler. As of now, I wouldn't pick him at 6, but he would be someone I would target if I was able to trade down in the draft.
He definitely needs to improve that aspect, the run game. He does tend to launch himself at times in run support. Ed Reed has similar issues coming out as well. Jets won't be able to trade down and select him, if the Jets don't take him the Chargers will. To me his ball-skills are as good as they get so I would take him at 6. Good assessment however.
Not only does he launch himself but he takes terrible angles to the ball carrier. Ed Reed wasn't a big hitter, but he was a sure tackler. If the Jets pass on Hooker, Eddie Jackson could be someone they target to play FS.
Did you say Ed Reed was a good tackler? Because the biggest knock on Reed was his tackling. He actually ranked pretty high in missed tackles in the nfl. Both Reed and the upcoming Hooker were both meh tacklers. The good thing about this is the single high safety isn't always in run support. If the Jets can't get Hooker, Budda Baker is another name I am interested in.
you are so good at this. Listen, don't get your jimmies rustled cause you bring 0 value to this specific topic, it's OK. Maybe you should just stay out of it???? jetfan59 has a great argument here, but I don't see why this player isn't on every Jet fans top 5 BPA board. That's what I am attempting to gauge. Great free safety prospects come around maybe once every 5 to 10 years. Same with Adams for the strong safety position. Jets need one of those guys on this roster and one should be available at 6.
Reed's biggest knock on him was definitely his tackling ability, but he wasn't a complete liability out there like Hooker is right now.
I agree with #1, Living in Columbus, I've seen Hooker's entire short career, he's being overvalued by many and not a player I would consider at #6 for the Jets. High risk/ reward player, something I wouldn't gamble with a top pick. As far as reaching for Mahomes at #6, that is a really off the wall. I know we need an infusion of Offensive talent on this team, but reaching is a mistake. If you want an offensive player, draft D Cook, Fournette or M. Williams (now Marshall is gone). Reaching for a QB like Mahomes isn't the way to go, it sounds like the Jets are possibly going to bring in a FA from the tidbits you get from Bowle's presser at the combine.
