This kid is a straight up baller. I watched alot of tape of him in the past few days & came away thoroughly impressed. Yes he came from a traditionally gimmick offense that drastically inflates passing stats. But I saw alot more straight forward downfield throws from that offense than previously under any other QB. It was not the system that made that offense successful...it was Mahomes. He has very good pocket presence, is impossible to sack, can make any throw & fits the ball into tight windows. This guy can simply take over football games when he gets on a roll. Now..he does come w. some work under the hood to be done. We see basically no work from under center & no formal footwork in his drop backs. It's impossible to gauge where he is in that portion of his development..or what can be done in short order to have him ready to be the week 1 starter. I think it's fairly evident that any offense he leads will need to be catered to fit his skill set regardless...it's just a matter of if he has enough footwork to at least be able to get on the field. Does he fit w. Jets? Well...yes & No. schematically...the word has been that Morton likes to use the short quick passing game to open up the seam & things deep. Mahomes did alot of that in college...and seems like a logical choice. But we do need to skim back over that footwork issue again..b.c he will be asked to make 3 & 5 step drops from under center early in games & on early downs. The Jets have typically swayed away from guys who "need catering"...preferring the scheme diverse QBs who can function in any system. But perhaps the time is now given where the team is at in a rebuild..to target a guy who they can build an offense around. From an on field perspective..I'm on board w. the guy in a trade down scenario. My last questions are...what type of leader is he? Whats his personality off the field? I like his command of offense & huddle during college games...can he be the face of a franchise?
I agree with everything you say, but he's not going to be there past 6, if he even falls to that point. Also, the tape analysis I watched shows him making "3 step drop" that really more like a 2 1/2 step drop and making the play as a rusher closed in on him. I think this is one of his biggest strengths - being able to improvise when plays break down, even when they blow up in his face. This is why he makes such a good fit for the Jets, given their current OL. Really, if you can see all the positives you listed, why wouldn't you take him with your first pick? Do you really want to risk losing a guy like that?
It all depends on that footwork for me. If he's starting day 1 & has the intangibles I alluded to in my earlier post...I'm all for the guy at 6. I do not believe he is fool's gold...I think he's the real deal. But...that footwork is major major projection. That 2 1/2 step drop will not work consistently in the NFL. We need to see at least marginal ability to complete 3 & 5 step drops early on. If he can't...he's another guy at least a year away....I'm not taking that type of prospect in round 1...at that point I'll stick w. Hack & to a lesser extent Petty.
With regards to this footwork issue, just substitute Mahomes for Mariota in the following post: If Mariota is sitting at the Jets pick... Post by: legler82, Mar 23, 2015 in forum: Draft
Sorry. I don't see an NFL QB. I watched that game and he holds the ball way too long. (I understand that Big Ben also did this, but that isn't a great trait for a QB. Steelers have been coaching that out of him over his career.) He also forced some passes that simply weren't there. I have only watched a little, but I would pass on him altogether.
Fantastic post..& I totally agree. Mahomes is a big strong fluid athlete. I have very little reason to believe he CAN'T master whatever drop they want to use. But we just need to make sure we do our due dilligence given that should we take him anywhere in round 1 he's likely the week 1 starter. While things might be open ended in terms of what he'd be asked to do...I guarantee it won't be the same "drops" that he used in Lubbock. Funny you should mention Mariotta. His game reminds me of a combo of Marriotta & Big Ben. Cept I'm hoping he's better fit for NY than Marriotta..who basically hinted all pre draft that he was quiet type..likely best suited for a smaller market.
It's not like he's taking any sacks...also there are plenty of examples of him throwing the ball away when nothing is open/pressure is overwhelming. In fact...I don't see him as holding the ball too long at all...I see it as him having elite pocket awareness/escapability & vision down field...and taking advantage of it. The guy is not a sure thing...but man there are alot of things to like about this guy...and alot of the aspects scream franchise QB.
I'm never going to understand the under center argument. Guys can learn the basics of that in a 15 minute teaching session. MM is every bit as good as thought he would be... it's a shame the Jets won that Titans game in 2014.
I of course like the Mahomes pick for the Jets. Is this a new approach to acquiring players? He has both the Giants and Packers picking Haason Reddick - do they get to split his salary; how do they divvie up the games that he'll play for them?
Which Air Raid QB has blown the NFL away and why exactly do we believe the Jets will magically find the first guy to do this given what we know about the Jets and young QB's? I'd rather take Trubisky's 13 starts on the 6 than another Air Raid QB anywhere in the draft, and I don't want Trubisky at all.
I don't even think picking Hooker would make me happier than taking Mahomes at this point, i want a QB i just don't think we have the balls to say screw Hack right now
If Mahomes makes throws like this because of his system, I don't understand why every football team on the face of the planet isn't running that system
nobody runs the air raid in the NFL because it would get the receivers killed. It is similar to the Run and Shoot offense which also failed when defensive backs that are bigger and just as fast in the NFL started T-ing off on all those receivers down field. Imagine Texas Tech trying that stuff in Seattle against the Seahawks? Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas would be putting folks in the ICU
It would benefit QB's coming out of college if teams could incorporate a mix of the pro style and college style air raid offence. IMHO. I do get what your saying though that college style of offence pro nflers can overcome quite easily but a mix may work and ease development of young QBs.
My point wasn't that the NFL should run that system, my point was that Mahomes isn't just a system quarterback. The system didn't enable him to make those throws, those are all NFL caliber.
