Man I couldn't disagree with you any more. A RB second in importance only to a FQB, whaaaaat??? I'd put RB only slightly ahead of punter in terms of importance. Fournette is being compared to AP? Ok, great, please tell me what AP has ever won? Has a team he's been on even won a playoff game? Ok so we select Fournette at 6, while we have no passing game that scares anyone so what happens? Teams stack the box every down, our franchise RB takes a beating and by the time we have a QB and passing game we need to look for a RB again. Even if I agreed with you that RB is second only to QB in terms of importance, which I think is beyond crazy talk but even if I did. Top end RB talents are coming out of the mid - late rounds every draft and this one will be no different. Take a RB in the 3rd or later that can pair with Powell going forward.
That you devalue RB as just ahead of a punter is what is "crazy talk". When a team doesn't have a good QB, an elite RB can be elevate the QB and OL play because of their ability, as AP proved in Minn., and great RBs through the years have also proved. But I did NOT say that adding a RB like Fournette is all they need to do to win. They also need a FQB. For the immediate future, having a QB who can make all the throws - along with a TE who can catch and an OC who knows how to use one, as well as WRs - means the "D" can't "stack the box" and shut your RB down, else they'll get burned. Powell is pedestrian, and isn't able to carry an offense on his back like Peterson has. Fournette is a generational talent, and you don't find them in the later rounds. But we're obviously at opposite ends and unable to agree, so I guess we'll have to see how things shake out in real life.
You're right about one thing, we will never agree on the importance of a running back. I do gotta know though, when has AP ever elevated his QB? AP is a great RB, I won't argue with you there but the only time Minnesota has had a threatening offense in his career there is when Favre was the QB. Would you agree that RB has the shortest shelf life of any other position? Would you also agree that RB is the easiest position to come into the league and play? I would think you'd agree cause that each of these questions aren't very debateable. So as you say, Jets need a QB, RB, WRs and TE, what sense does it make to get the RB first? I think the talk of Fournette as a generational talent is overblown as well, maybe 15 years ago he would be. He hasn't proven to be a two way back which is pretty much needed in today's NFL.
you know, it's a poor argument to make when elliot did what he did in dallas. he kept pressure of dak as a rookie QB made the pro bowl and both of them led dallas to the playoffs a 4th overall pick RB and a 4th round QB. It makes sense because BPA. the leonard williams pick didn't make sense but we did it. and he was our best player on defense last season. Also shelf life doesn't matter. how often does any player play over 5-6 years on the jets? We are going to have a young QB anyway, and a poor o-line or at least rebuilding one. a guy like fournette makes hack's transition that much easier
I'm surprised he actually added weight from last year. He normally played around 235 at LSU, but I thought he would try to get down between 225-230.
Comparing the Dallas situation to the Jets situation is the poor argument. Dallas thought they had their QB, had a top 5 WR, a very good TE oh and the best OL in the league. Jets don't have one of these, let alone all of them. Jets in 09 had the best running game in the league. Whys that? Was it because Thomas Jones was the best RB? Nope it's because they had a great OL. Drafting Williams made sense because he was the clear cut BPA. This draft is loaded at the top, Fournette considering positional importance is not going to be the clear cut BPA.
He's one hell of a physical specimen though ... large ass hands to boot ... if he somehow runs under a 4.4 ...
Well maybe you just don't pay attention to the running game. But you take a guy like Fournette who can break ANY play for 6, and that is somebody I want on my team. Look at all the "great" RBs who can't do that. Sure, once in a while, but consistently? Only a very few can do that. How often have we seen Jet RBs get taken down after a decent gain that had they been a step quicker/faster they could've broken it to the house? Pedestrian RBs are a dime a dozen and I agree with you they're certainly not worth a top 10 pick, but guys like Fournette are IMO. As to how many times the Vikings had a great offense with AP? As I said, by himself, AP - or any RB- isn;t going to get you the championship, but they make it so that you don't need a great QB to do it either. Shelf life? Averages aren't facts. Any player can end his career in his first game. Peterson has played for 10 years and will likely play a couple more. But it makes more sense to draft and sign Fournette to a rookie contract and get his best four years relatively cheaply, than to pay AP or Charles a king's ransom on their downhill side. How has Fournette proven he isn't a two-way back? He runs, catches, blocks, Where is his shortcoming? Again, it's clear you don't value RBs, so I won't spend any more time with you on this. Time will tell who was right.
he will be right around 4.4 flat. check out this chart, fournette ran a personal best 10.68 100 meter in hs ... https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/3e1vfa/ochow_40yard_dash_result_translated_to_100_sprint/
except he is unless something crazy happens there is a 99% chance fournette is the BPA when it's our turn. Yes we have other needs but none of them that will be avilable at 6 are worth such a high pick (CB, S, O-line) the best options we have is trade back or draft BPA which will likely be fournette
Garrett, Myles DE 6'5" 270 Texas A&M 7.6 Fournette, Leonard RB 6'1" 235 LSU 7.1 Thomas, Solomon DE 6'3" 273 Stanford 6.8 Allen, Jonathan DE 6'3" 291 Alabama 6.8 top 5 grades. like 2 years ago, willaims was the highest graded player, he fell due to position need and the jets grabbed him at 6. Garrett is the best player in the draft and will go 1st most likely. fournette could slip due to a QB goin (trib at 3 to chi) and the rets of these DEs being a bigger need. his grade puts him at pro bowl to all pro level.
I highly doubt Jets are making their draft board based on his grade from some random draft "expert" lol.
He is for sure going to the Jags. They took 5 defensive players with their first 5 picks last year. Additionally, they took Fowler at #3 in 2015. They aren't dumbasses (like the Jets). They won't piss away more picks on defense.
No they are clearly taking advice from "rextasy" It's the same guy who graded williams as the top prospect. yeah all teams have their own grades but in general most of them are pretty similar
but their defense still sucks. yeldon was a 2nd rounder 2 years ago, they gave ivory a big deal, they have WRs in herns, robinson, and lee. they need bortles to bounce back. they had a great offense in 2015. bortles just slumped in 2016. they need to go defense. plus 4 of the top 5 players are all D-line in this draft
