Reading through the thread at this point I think we should add an option to the poll: "Run screaming into the parking lot."
that rb situation would be shaky, health wise. a bit too much age/wear and tear for my liking. i'd pass on adp and j.charles. i like that line though and oj howard though
Until you fix the gaping hole at left tackle WE DO NOT HAVE AN OFFENSE. Reiff is young, capable, and can move to right tackle if we draft a left tackle in the future. While he will cost some money your post would imply that we have any other choice than to pay this man to be the vital cog in our rebuilt offensive line. ADP or Charles will be expensive and do represent an element of injury risk. Their age is also a concern. With that being said, both of them when healthy represent a game changing risk that the other team must account for. They can pound the rock and catch the ball to serve as a safety net for our young QB. We would be paying one of them so that we do not have to pay $12 mil per year to a washed up quarterback in the desperate hope that they can generate any offense at all. One veteran player does not cripple a team for years with cap problems. Even if we gave one of them a four year deal, only 2-3 years would be guaranteed.
Well you acknowledge that a game-changing RB CAN be a huge help, so why not go with Fournette or Cook, both younger, cheaper, and at thsis stage, almost certainly better and more reliable than Petersen or Charles. If you went that route, then spending on Reiff makes sense to me, and the cost is bearable. And I completely agree about paying anything to a washed up QB, or someone else's discard. That's why I keep beating the drum for Mahomes or Watson. Now you won't get both Fournette and one of those two, and my preference is take the QB if he's there, but if he''s not there, or the Jetrs "brain trust" wants to go with Petty/Hack/CHEAP Vet, then adding an elite RB like Fournette/Cook is the alternative.
Why don't you also call for Trubisky? Is it because you don't think he'll be available at 6 or because you don't like him as much?
How many guys get drafted top 10 in the NFL Draft with one season as the starting QB in college? How many guys get drafted at all in the 1st Round with that condition as well as coming out as a Junior? I am going to be shocked if Trubisky is taken in the 1st round when everything settles out in the end. It's going to take a team that does not value their 1st Round pick very much OR has the job sewn up with a star QB for 2+ seasons so Trubisky does not have to step on the field before 2019 at the earliest. The league is changing but there are still baselines in place and one season as a starting QB plus coming out early is way beyond any reasonable baseline to be a high draft pick.
I consider Trubisky as "Sanchez II" - he's had even less actual game time than Sanchez did. I wouldn't even consider taking him in any round because we already have enough "projects". If the Jets take Trubisky at 6, they're even more incompetent and hopeless than I already think they are.
Anyone we draft is going to be younger and cheaper but you want to blow our whole wad at #6 while I am suggesting we trade down to fill multiple holes. The offense I listed included OJ Howard and Forrest Lamp (likely to be what we get if we trade down from #6). I would rather have both of these guys than the RBs or QBs you want to use our pick on. While we use up some cap space on our #1 RB we get a proven player that is sure to make the opposing defensive coordinator to wet his pants. Both of the top 2 RBs in the draft have an injury history so they are no safer than the veterans I listed (ADP and Charles).
I'm on the fence about most of this, but don't you think that last sentence is just a little over the top.
You almost have to.You are not going to win anything in 2017 forward w.o a real QB. If winning is what is important to the given organization...then the first step is finding a QB. End of story. It isn't just that all the rules & style of play are slanted toward the position. It's also that as year to year turnover becomes more & more wide spread...you have to have some sort of leadership based infrastructure & continuity in place. The only position on O you can count on for that is QB.
I hear ya, but barring the opportunity to acquire some generational, Jim Brown-like talent, I just would not draft a running back in the top 10 in today's NFL.
Perhaps, but even a running back markedly better than Charles would not necessarily be worth drafting in the top 10 for us, IMO. I would probably only consider it if I thought the guy I was drafting had a chance to be Jim Brown. I agree
fournette is the best prospect since Adrian Peterson. He's rated higher the zeke last year and gurley a few years ago. zeke went top 5 and gurley went 6th i believe. Most likely he will be the BPA when we draft.
Ok, let's say he WAS Adrian Peterson. My contention is that a guy like that is only worth it on a rookie deal. The moment you have to pay him all-pro money, he's simply not worth it because he eats up far too much salary cap space at one of the most replaceable positions on the entire field. Look at the what the Vikings have done with AP as their best player over the last decade. It is worth pointing out that my stance would be very different if the NFL had a soft cap that let teams exceed the cap to keep their own guys.
yeah but rookie deals for a top 5 pick are 5 years ( 4 years and a 5th year option) he signed for 25 million so about 6.25 mil a year. that's very reasonable for a guy putting up Peterson like numbers. and RBs adjust very well. unlike other positions rookie RBs have a high sucess rate and make impacts in rookie years better then most positions. that means that we would be set at RB with a stud runner through the 2021 season at a very reasonable price. if we aren't competing by 2019 at the latest that would be an embarrassment. plus he'll take pressure off the young QBs we have and make teams stack the box opening up the pass game. even if we don't keep him after 2021 it's still worth it. look at the impact zeke, mccoy, bell, johnson etc have on their teams on rookie deals. a guy like fournette would be more of a help to hack then anyone else we would draft at 6 except maybe online. but unless you get a franchise LT it isn't worth taking o-line that high. Other options we could take QB - would be a reach, makes the hack pick useless, and QBs have a high rate of failure. Malik hooker - safety, could be usefull but is injured and will miss all the offseason. could be a rookie year bust and risky CB lattimore or humprey - would be a good pick but won't help the offense or hack plus could trade down a few spots. neither are top 5 worthy but both are top 10-12 Mike williams - best WR in the draft but not worth taking higher then 10. plus we have budding stars in enunwa and anderson. smith has a shot still to be useful, decker and marshall one will stay (probably decker) and jalin and peake as well. we have a good young group of WRs so not a huge need Ruben Foster - but we drafted a LB in the 1st last year. he isn't worth the 6 pick, and we have 2 more young Lbers just drafted high last eyar and 2015. Cam robinson - best lineman in the draft and fills a need at OT but not a top 10 pick So as i see it we have a few options take BPA which would likely be fournette reach for another high QB trade down a few spots an try for OT robinson, WR williams, or CBs lattimore or humphrey and get some extra picks For me I'd say take fournette or try and trade down a few spots and grab humprey. the problem is nobody behind us needs a RB so they won't trade up. maybe the colts at 14 but IDK if they would give up so much to get fournette. we could get robinson at 14 and have extra picks
Until you get your FQB, this is an investment well worth making. Short of a FQB, this is the biggest impact you could make on the Jets offense. BTW: Some analysts have said that Fournette is actually better than Peterson because he can catch and block, which are things that ADP really hasn't been asked to do.
Gurley did nothing last year to help his team because he had a bad Oline and instability at the QB position. Gurley is a good RB but his play fell off drastically because there was no one else on that offense that scared anyone, the opposing defenses zeroed in on him and made him a non factor, even with all of his talent he could not save that offense. Zeke was drafted as a finishing piece on a Dallas team that was complete at WR, OL, TE. The jets don't need to pick a RB this year with the 6th pick, build the team from trenches out and the RB can be selected in a later round as a complimentary piece instead of the piece that you build the offense around.
I'd be scouting the hell out of Mahomes and if I thought he was a gym rat and had top notch intangibles to go with his amazing physical skills I'd take the chance on him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I disagree. A stud RB that you know you can count on year in and year out is worth what you pay him. He helps keep your offense and team at a consistently high level. If he's showing lots of wear and tear after those 4-5 years (depending on the length of his rookie deal), then you don't re-sign him. If he gets greedy and wants too much, you let him walk and know that you'll get a 3rd round compensatory pick.
